It was made by Louis Cartier at the request of his friend, the Brazilian aviation pioneer, Alberto Santos-Dumont. Santos-Dumont expressed how difficult it was to check his pocket watch while flying and Louis Cartier responded by inventing the first purpose-designed modern wristwatch. Featuring geometric shapes and exposed screws, the Santos watch revolutionised watchmaking and remains a classic model to this day.
