Jean Moise Pouzait presented a model for this escapement to the Geneva Society of Arts in 1786. The idea appears to derive from the pin-wheel escapement in clocks. Pouzait, who eleven years earlier had invented the independent seconds mechanism, seems to have developed this new lever escapement in an attempt to simplify the mechanism for dead seconds.
