A sterling silver enamel 'ORCADES' bracelet, by Mappin and Webb, Birmingham 1953, a series of rectangular plaques, each one decorated with mint green enamel letters to spell out the name 'ORCADES' to a mint green enamel border with reentrant corners, all joined by pairs of jump rings with polished bead decoration to a bolt ring clasp, a matching plaque link charm with blue and white enamel decorated flag of the 'Orient Line''ORCADES' of the 'Orient Line', built at Barrow by Vickers Armstrong, was launched on 14 December 1948. It was the first purpose-built vessel for migrant trade and sailed the Australia-New Zealand route. It took part in the June 1953 'Coronation Review' off Spithead and provided accommodation for two weeks during the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.
A silver bowl, by Wallace C Smyth, Sheffield 1987, of circular form with oval pierced panels, on fluted circular foot,18.5cm diameter, 25ozWallace Smythe was born in 1910 at Dinnington, Sheffield. Aged 14 he won a scholarship to a local School of Art where he studied for the next two years. Then, in 1927, he started his career at Mappin & Webb, ultimately becoming Head of Design. He produced designs for homewares as well as special commissions. Later in his career he became a lecturer at Chesterfield College of Art, whilst remaining a freelance designer. He was still actively silversmithing into his 90s. These pieces by Wallace Smyth come from the estate of Mary Lainchbury. It is believed that the items marked with Chesterfield College of Art's sponsor mark were made by Mary Lainchbury during evening classes taught by Wallace Smyth. It is thought she purchased Wallace's work directly from him.With thanks to Kelham Island Musuem for providing further information.
