EDWARD VIII SILVER SALVER of scalloped flower head form, raised on three hoof feet with inscribed presentation: 'H.A.T. from the staff, Chigwell School, 1925-1965'. Sheffield, 1936, makers: Mappin and Webb. 18 Troy ozs approx. 24.7cm diameter. CONDITION REPORT: Surface scratches and wear as expected, inscription clear, hallmarks clear, no obvious repairs or major damage.

A 9ct GOLD INKSTAND, CIRCA 1916 unmarked, the rectangular stand with moulded border, on four foliate bracket feet, fitted with two brackets for a triple pen rest and a square frame with a heavy cut-glass inkwell, the gold hinged lid engraved with a stag's head crest, motto JE SUIS PREST and the dates 1866 1916 stand 300g, 18cm wide, fitted case by Mappin & Webb PROVENANCE Sold by Stephan Welz & Co., In Association with Sotheby's, Johannesburg, August, 2000 Lot 435 Sir John George Fraser, politician and lawyer in Beaufort West and Bloemfontein. He was a strong supporter of President Brand and chairman of the Volksraad from 1884 to 1896. He opposed participation in the second Anglo-Boer War. According to family tradition, this was a 50th wedding anniversary gift from King George V. This would account for the piece not being hallmarked. Sir John married Dorothea Ortlepp in Colesberg on 18 April 1866.
