He was a strong supporter of President Brand and chairman of the Volksraad from 1884 to 1896. He opposed participation in the second Anglo-Boer War. According to family tradition, this was a 50th wedding anniversary gift from King George V. This would account for the piece not being hallmarked. Sir John married Dorothea Ortlepp in Colesberg on 18 April 1866.
