A rare mid-17th century hallmarked silver lidded Tankard of round straight sided section and having a cast scallop shell and mask thumbpiece, gilded interior and with false bottom, the central cartouche engraved with a Bacchanalian style scene, scrolling handle leading to a band in relief above a slightly spreading circular foot, engraved inscription to underside to J.F. Brocklehurst, Royal Horse Guards Feb. 23. 1878 from The Sheriff, makers mark of Heinrich Friederichs (Hamburg), circa 1640, sold together with original S.J. Phillips purchase invoice for June 1952 in the sum of £110 and also with later (April 1970) Mappin & Webb Limited valuation for insurance CONDITION REPORT: Although we are not silver experts we think that the engraving to the tankard could well be contemporary with the date in which it was made. We have shown it to dealers/experts who also consider that the engraving may be original but we cannot guarantee this. There is some minor pitting to the gilded interior at the bottom, some tarnish and discolouration and at the bottom end of the handle where it kicks out there is a shield shaped piece engraved with a small armorial and the piece itself is very slightly bent, the circular edge of the foot also has a slight kink, otherwise the piece appears to be in reasonable overall order and condition for age. Size is 21.5cm high (to tip of thumbpiece) x 12cm diameter widest part of the width on the bottom of the foot. This darker area is a white metal stud that is in relief in the inside of the Tankard and if you look on the outside of the Tankard where it starts from there is an exotic bird perched on a cresting and the stud appears to start through the birds head and continues to the inside of the Tankard. Total weight 572.5g
