An Irish silver commemorative strawberry dish, by Mappin & Webb, Dublin 1967, with Sheffield import marks for 1967, inset with a medallion commemorating the 1916 uprising, diameter 12.5 cm, weight 7 oz. In 1916, a group of radical Irish republicans seized control of several key points in Dublin, including the General Post Office depicted in this medallion. They began their rebellion on the 24th of April (Easter Monday), attempting to take advantage of Britain's preoccupation with the war against the Central Powers. The rebellion was intended to inspire a general revolt against British rule throughout Ireland, with German assistance. However, the rebellion ended in military failure, as it was crushed by the British Army six days later. Initially, the rebellion was also a political failure, as the defeated rebels were booed and jeered by the population of Dublin, many of whom had family members in the British Army fighting in the trenches at the time. However, the British Government then made the monumental mistake of ordering the execution of most of the surviving ringleaders of the revolt, which created an outpouring of sympathy for the executed rebels and turned public opinion in favour of their cause, which eventually inspired the election of Sinn Fein candidates to most Irish constituencies in the Khaki election of 1918, and the subsequent Irish War of independence, leading to the partition of Ireland and the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922. Obverse This medallion commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising, and depicts the GPO on one side, with the inscription: AISEIRI NA CASCA 1916 - 1966 Reverse The reverse features the signatures of the seven military committee members responsible for orchestrating the rebellion, and who were executed by the British Government for their role in the uprising.
