SHERLOCK HOLMES INTEREST:Mid-Victorian presentation biscuit barrel or tobacco jar by Mappin & Webb; the lidded silver plated barrel inscribed ‘CLSAS, 1873, Lysander Maybury, First Prize, Half Mile’, engraved with foliate decoration and raised on three claw feet, impressed mark for Mappin & Webb, 13.2cm high overall.Note: It is believed that Dr Lysander Maybury of 9 Hampshire Terrace, Portsmouth - respected police surgeon and medical writer - was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s acquaintance and source of inspiration for two characters featured in the Canon of Sherlock Holmes: Colonel Lysander Stark in ‘The Adventure of the Engineer’s Thumb’ (1892) and Dr Lysander Starr in ‘The Adventure of the Three Garridebs’ (1924).Arthur Conan Doyle’s medical practice at 1 Bush Villas, Southsea was less than a ten minute walk from Dr Lysander Maybury’s practice at Hampshire Terrace.
