A good Mappin & Webb coromandel wood and gilt metal mounted tea caddy, 19th century, with Gothic style applied gilt metal decoration, the interior lid with purple silk lining and housing a cut glass mixing bowl flanked by hinged caddies and with applied label for Mappin Webb & Co , 77 and 78 Oxford Street, 71 and 72 Cornhill, London. 31.4 cm wide, 17 cm high (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The casket is in generally extremely good condition. All brass work is present. The hinges are original and very secure with no movement. The lock and plate are present. We do not have a key. The exterior brass work has some slight tarnishing and losses to the original lacquered finish but in our opinion these are very minor issues. The veneers to the top lid are very good and the colour uniform. There are very faint traces of stress fractures in places but no lifting veneer or anything untoward. The front panel is in extremely good order as is the back and both sides. There are very minor nibbles to the sharp edges but again this is insignificant. The two interior lidded compartments are both in extremely good order with no movement at the hinges. The glass bowl fits the aperture but we are not sure if this is original or not.
