A Regency satinwood and crossbanded secretaire desk, the glazed upper section above a fitted secretaire with another drawer below, on square tapering legs, 233cm high x 97.5cm wide CONDITION REPORT: The bookcase with lifting veneer to the corners and chequered frieze and lower frieze which also has splits. Doors slightly warped. Interior later materially lined and white painted later. Secretaire base with small pieces of veneer lifting in places. Both side panels split and warped. Secretaire interior with stained and scuffed leather lining. Drawer handles loose and damaged. Only one drawer with handle intact. Veneer lifting on fall. Base front faded and damaged at left hand drawer handle. Apron very faded. Block feet scuffed. Drawer apron not believed to be later addition. Legs from base of apron re-modelled. Handles not original.
A 19th Century brass bound campaign chest, fitted an arrangement of seven drawers around a central secretaire drawer, with countersunk handles on turned feet, 105.5cm wide CONDITION REPORT: The back of top is badly split and pieces missing. Brass bound sides lifting, split and re-pinned. Right hand side top with gouges and other damages. Top drawer slightly bowed and slightly warped. Secretaire drawer secure locks inoperable. Fall very stiff. Central cupboard door missing. Stationery drawer very stiff and missing handle. All drawer fronts with noticeable scratches. Base with veneer lifting to right hand side. Drawers fairly stiff and drawer divisions badly rubbed. Height 127cm and depth 48cm.
A George IV Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase, 2nd quarter 19th century, the upper section with glazed doors with fluted moulding enclosing four adjustable shelves, above a deep secretaire drawer enclosing a fitted interior of pigeon holes and small drawers, the base of two cupboard doors enclosing shelves, on reduced later bracket feet119cm by 55cm by 226cmThe bracket feet have been reduced in height and are of later date. Astragal glazing with some repair work on the moulding (see images). Moulding replaced down the middle section. The base to the secretaire drawer has some splits which have been partly filled and polished. Small fault to the cock beading on the secretaire drawer. The smaller handles within the secretaire drawer are bone. With key and working lock.
A Victorian mahogany campaign secretaire chest, in two parts, with a central drop-front drawer with a fitted interior and flanked by two small drawers with two short and two long drawers below, with recessed brass furniture and side carrying handles, height 105cm, width 105.5cm, depth 49cm.Wear consummate with age, cracks to the top and right hand side of the bottom section, lock missing from right hand side second row drawer with a drilled hole behind the handle plate, all the remaining locks are original, All drawers operate smoothly and all joints are stable and robust on the two sections of the furniture. Repair to the back top section, no evidence of worm. The top tier two side drawer linings are camphor and oak, there is only one oak panel on each drawer which is on the inner lining, all the other drawers are camphor linings. There is an old fabric repair to the back panel of the top section. Extra images on David Lay website.

FOURIER JOSEPH: (1768-1830) French Mathematician and Physicist. Best known for initiating the investigation of the Fourier series and their applications to problems of heat transfer and vibrations. The Fourier transform and Fourier´s law of conduction are named after him. He is credited with the discovery of the greenhouse effect. Rare L.S., Fourier, one page, folio, Cairo, 21st December 1799, in French. The letter being a report of state of expenses issued by the Commission of Information related to the modern state of Egypt. Signed by Fourier in his capacity as President of the Commission.The document details a small list of expenses with their individual cost, stating `Achat de neuf cartables… achat de deux registres…. Achat de diverses drogues pour faire de l´encre… faire relier un livre Arabe…´ (“Purchase of nine binders… purchase of two registers…. Purchase of various drugs to make ink… to bind an Arabic book..”) Also signed, twice, by Baudeuf, a French important representative of an important company of commerce at Cairo, in his capacity as Secretaire of the Commission. Overall age wear, mostly to edges, with very slightly trimmed edges. G
