A Georgian mahogany secretaire bookcase, with detachable cornice above a pair of glazed doors with wooden astragals. The base with secretaire drawer above a pair of panelled cupboard doors and all raised on turned legs. Height 218 cm, width 112 cm, depth 55.5 cm. (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The cornice is of good colour and is free from any noticeable losses. On the main upper section at the base there is a small piece of veneer missing to the rear on the right-hand side and on the left-hand side at the bottom of the base there is a piece of veneer missing which is approximately 4 cm in length. The flat section shows signs of use, slight marks, ring marks, specs of water staining etc but nothing massively untoward that would not polish out. The cockbeading to the top of the drawer in the centre has a break and the piece is missing and there is another small section to the right-hand side. Internally there are signs of use, ink stains etc and slight moth damage to the baize section. The cupboard doors in the base section show some slight fading and marks consummate with age. There is a section of veneer missing to the centre left-hand side and a section which has been replaced to the centre right-hand side. There are various marks to the entire bookcase, small sections of missing veneer but nothing untoward

A GEORGE IV MAHOGANY BREAKFRONT LIBRARY BOOKCASE OF ROYAL INTEREST, CIRCA 1825 Bearing royal inventory cypher stamps 'GIVR HO P*E*TS' and 'WVR' 246cm high, 252cm wide, 63cm deepThe stamps to this bookcase appear to be clear evidence of this bookcase being present in a British royal household during the reigns of King William IV and King George V. The stamp in one area likely provides a clue to its specific location during the reign of William IV. The possible location is subject to ongoing research at the time of this catalogue going to print.  Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits, some old repairs. Some additional dark scratches in areas including to the top surface of the base (as expected) and in higher concentration to the interior of the bookcase section from use. High quality well figured timber throughout. Good original surface with good colour and patina. Several features of the bookcase demonstrate the high standard to which it was made including solid mahogany drawer linings throughout. The drawer linings of the interior drawers of the secretaire are excellent quality. There are two original adjustable shelves for each of the four sections of the upper bookcase element. The green baize writing surface is a relatively recent replacement. The glass all appears original and no cracks or breaks can be detectedThe drawer handles and the locks all appear original throughout, with the exception of the secretaire drawer which has a security lock (early Bramah type). The keys to operate the drawer and door locks are present, however the key for the 'security' lock of the secretaire drawer is lacking. Some old splits and chips. Some old repairs, some small losses as expected for age. A small number of screws lacking from metal fittings including locksThe secretaire drawer is not easy to take out at present so requires some minor adjustment/ treatment to ease. Condition Report: Overall there are some scratches, marks, knocks, cracks, abrasions and minor repairs consistent with age and use.Of warm colour with some fading generally to the upper right front and side and to some of the interior.Some cracks and minor repairs to the veneers and mouldings.There is some old worm.The candle slides not sitting quite flush when recessed, the door slightly bowed so that when closed the base touches home but the top doesn't quite.The brass handles and escutcheons are later with some marks to the centre of some handle backplates, suggesting that they might originally have had keyholes (?)The locks are old but probably later, there is one key that operates all the locks.There are some variations in the feather and crossbanding.The turned feet are probably later.Quality oak drawer linings.Please see the additional photographs as a visual reference of condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

Their two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Hayward (1906-1976) and Harriet Taft Hayward (1907-1968), lived at Oakwald, Franklin, Massachusetts and were both painted by the artist Sir John Lavery (1856 - 1941); see Christie's, The Scottish Sale at The Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, 6975, 28th October 2004, Lot 152.

Splits, knocks, losses and wear to veneer throughout. Scuffs and marks. Wear and damage to interior, with the compartment within the fall seemingly stuck. Fall hinge functional. Drawers generally run smoothly. One escutcheon lost. Joints generally sound and solid. Knocks, wear, losses and repair to feet. Overall in need of a little cosmetic attention, but fairly structurally sound. The feet certainly show patination, wear and damage that is consistent with age, and appear to have been with the chest for a significant amount of time, however we have no knowledge of its life or ownership prior to the Malcom Frazer Collection, so cannot guarantee that they are original.
