ARAGO FRANÇOIS: (1786-1853) French Mathematician, Physicist and Astronomer. A.N.S., F. Arago, one page, 4to, n.p. [Paris], 29th May 1847, to the assistant Secretary of State, in French. Arago adds a three lines note in his hand to to the end of a letter which states `If it is convenient to you today to give us your opinion on the project of law we are considering, the commission would listen to you with pleasure today...´ further saying `In that case would you please inform the Prefet of the Seine, who reported intending to meet you´. Underneath his signature, Arago adds a boldly written annotation indicating that the Prefet Mr. De Rambuteau will be at the town hall till 2h30 and later at the Pairs Chamber. To the left border annotated and countersigned by Leon Faucher in his capacity as Secretaire. An excellent bold signature example with flourish. EX. £150-200 Claude-Philibert Barthelot (1781-1869) Count of Rambuteau. French Préfet of the former Départment of the Seine, which included Paris, 1833-48. He established the groundwork for the fundamental transformation of Paris carried out under the Second Empire. Under his administration, the Arc de Triomphe was finished and the building of the great avenue of the Champs-Élysées was commenced. He modernised Paris under his motto "water, air, shade". Leon Faucher (1803-1854) French Politician and Economist. Prime Minister of France 1851.
JOLIOT-CURIE FREDERIC: (1900-1958) French Physicist, husband of Irene Joliot-Curie and assistant to Marie Curie. Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry, 1935. T.L.S., F. Joliot-Curie, one page, 4to, Paris, 4th March 1947, to a gentleman, in French. The letter bears the printed heading of the Intellectuals National Union, with head office in Paris and Joliot-Curie signs in his capacity as General Secretaire of the U.N.I. and as Nobel Laureate and invites his correspondent to a boarding committee of the U.N.I. convened by Gabriel Chevallier, looking for the defense and dissemination of the French culture. A fine 19th century satinwood secretaire cabinet the open back with three central open shelves, flanked by single tall open shelves above single cupboard doors with arched inlaid tulipwood panels, all divided by turned tapered pilasters and surmounted by ebonised rosette finials, over a fiddleback satinwood veneered top with satinwood cross banding and ebony edge stringing, above one long and two short cross banded frieze drawers with turned ebonised handles, the centre drawer a fitted secretaire with an arrangement of five satinwood drawers and three pigeonholes over a shaped baize writing surface within satinwood banding, the base with a pair of gilt grille insert doors with ivory silk, enclosing a divided interior with single shelf to each side, flanked by baluster turned tapered columns, raised on turned toupie feet, 69in. A George III mahogany secretaire bookcase, the top half with a moulded cornice above a pair of glazed doors with wooden astragals enclosing shelves, the base with secretaire drawer above three further graduated drawers with brass drop handles, circular backplates and raised on splayed bracket feet. Width 43 ins. CONDITION REPORT: This piece is in unrestored condition. The cornice is in good order. The doors are in generally good condition and not warped. We have the key and the lock operates. One pane of glass is cracked (to the right of the key) on the right hand side. The sides of the top are slightly scuffed and marked but there are no significant issues. The base is in generally sound condition. There are scratches and scuffs to the sides as one would expect. The secretaire drawer operates as it should. The interior is a little tired but all present. The handles to all drawers are not original but they are old. There is evidence of a previous set of knob handles visible from behind the drawer fronts. The cockbeading to the drawers is generally in good order with only minor losses. The bracket feet are original but a little scuffed.
A 19th century mahogany secretaire desk, with moulded cornice above a tambour front enclosing shelves, with secretaire beneath and with three drawers with brass drop handles with circular backplates, flanked by rounded column corners and raised on short fluted legs. Width 47 ins. CONDITION REPORT: This piece requires some restoration. The top right hand corner of the cornice is quite badly damaged as is the return and there is a loss at the rear. Of the piece near the wall. The left hand side has some small nibbles to the top of the return on the cornice. The sides of the pieces are in generally good order. The tambour front operates as it should but does have some minor damage. The interior of the top is in generally good condition. We do not have the key for the fall front which is needed to close the flap. There is some damage to the bottom left hand corner of the flap which should be visible from our image. The drawer fronts are in generally good condition and the brasswork original. The legs are structurally sound and original. The interior of the piece is all present and correct but does require some minor restoration.
A Regency mahogany secretaire bookcase, in two sections, with moulded cornice above a pair of glazed doors with wooden astragals and brass edging strip enclosing shelves and flanked by half round columns, the base fitted with a secretaire drawer above three further graduated drawers with brass drop handles with circular backplates and raised on bracket feet. Width 50 ins. CONDITION REPORT: The secretaire chest is in reasonable condition but does require some restoration. The top right hand corner of the cornice has some veneer damage. The upper doors do not quite meet in the centre. This could be rectified by slightly moving the brass edging strip. The doors are slightly but not significantly warped. The left hand return moulding has a small loss to the rear at the back. The right hand return moulding is also slightly damaged. The top of the base has several old scratches and slight water damage. The drawer fronts are all in generally good condition with only the top drawer having a minor loss to the cock beading in the top left hand corner. All handles are present, however the top right hand handle is missing its circular drop. The bracket feet are all scuffed and have veneer losses and both sides have old splits which are clearly visible.
A George I walnut veneered secretaire chest on chest, with moulded cornice and crossbanded frieze above three short and three long graduated drawers to the upper section with brass drop handles and shaped backplates, the base fitted with one secretaire drawer above three further graduated drawers, the lower drawer with sunburst and raised on bracket feet. Height 72 ins, width 41 ins, depth 22 ins (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This piece is in extremely good order and could be used or resold in its current condition without the need for any repairs or restoration. The lot has been fully restored in recent years. The cornice is in good condition. All drawers run freely as they should. All drawers are oak lined. The handles are likely to be later replacements but there is very little evidence of this from the front of the piece except on the top three drawers. If you look very closely you can see small repairs covering small holes from a previous set of handles. All other handles and lock escutcheons show no evidence of replacement apart from at the rear where one old set of holes is visible. The handles are of the correct style and very much in keeping. The bracket feet are original and in generally good condition. The sides of the piece are in generally good order with evidence of old stress fractures but no significant issues. The secretaire drawer operates as it should.
