Provenance: purchased from Lita Kaye of Lyndhurst, Hampshire, England in 1976.

A GEORGE III SATINWOOD AND SABICU BONHEUR-DU-JOUR, ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE SIMSON A GEORGE III SATINWOOD AND SABICU BONHEUR-DU-JOUR, ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE SIMSON, CIRCA 1790 With finely figured West Indian satinwood and Caribbean Sabicu veneers and ebony stringing throughout, the superstructure with gallery top above an open bookshelf flanked by two convex doors and central drawer with ivory turned handles, the secretaire enclosing four small drawers and three arched architrave pigeon holes, the fall front with tooled green leather writing surface above fall front cupboard with plain interior, on square tapering legs with brass terminals and castors, 73cm width x 45cm depth x 120.5cm height. Lot notes: The attribution to George Simson is based upon an example bearing his label and illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 422, fig. 840. The labelled piece is closely related to the present lot and is after a design in Thomas Sheraton Cabinet-maker and UpholstererDrawing-Book, London, 1895, pl. 64. George Simson is recorded at 19 St. Paul Churchyard from 1780-1839 in G. Beard, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p.817. In 1793 he subscribed to Thomas Sheraton Drawing-Book and in 1803 he was included in the list of master cabinet-makers in the Cabinet Director (G. Beard, op.cit., p. 817). Many pieces bearing his label feature fine figured timbers such as satinwood and sabicu, as with the current lot. A similar bonheur-du-jour, also attributed to George Simson, was sold anonymously, Christie, London, 7 June 2007, lot 15 (£ 13,200). Provenance: Purchased in 1983 from Palmer Antiques, Sydney.

Circa 1840. 49.5" x 23" x 92" (126cm x 59cm x 234cm) CONDITION REPORT: Grubby, scuffed and worn commensurate with age. Cracks to two of the glass panes. Feet are detached, return moulding from bookcase on one side is detached. Cracks to side panels to one side which is also slightly faded.

Circa 1815. 33" x 19" x 86" (84cm x 48cm x 219cm) CONDITION REPORT: Overall good, minor veneer damage to carcass frame around drawers, some splitting to panels of cupboard doors. Ink stains to surfaces, scuffs and wear and tear. Detailed report on request.

Circa 1865. 47.5" x 82" x(121cm x 208cm) CONDITION REPORT: Fair condition for age. Rather dry with fading and splitting to panels on both ends. General scuffs and wear and tear commensurate with age. Areas of missing cock beading on drawers. Moulding loose to one side of base. Lock missing on fall front.

Assorted cracks and splits to the wood. Cracks to two of the panes. Some of the brass work is missing, noticably the fall front hinge on the left hand side. Lights have been added to the interior.
