A George III Figured Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase of Chippendale Design, the upper part with fretted and moulded cornice, the frieze carved with leaf scroll ornament, fitted three shelves enclosed by pair of astragal glazed doors, the base with blind frett carved frieze, fitted secretaire drawer with twin dummy drawer front, enclosing pigeon holes and nine small drawers, three long drawers under, on bracket feet, 43ins wide x 20ins deep x 87ins high Provenance: A. Fredericks (Chelsea) Ltd, 256-267 Fulham Road, London SW3 - Purchased 5th February 1957Condition ReportSome light scattered scratching to the whole and some uneven fading to the front. Slight shrinkage to the veneer commensurate with age. To the left hand side of the top there is a small area of repair around 2ins diameter and to the top left hand side there is a small area of repair around 1ins diameter. The moulding on the top of the base on the right hand side has a small area of shrinkage running diagonally around 1ins long. To the front left hand edge of the base there is a small area of shrinkage running horizontally around 2ins long. The carved frieze on the right hand side, the moulding is slightly loose but present. All the drawers run free and easily with minimal resistance. The key is present and the locking mechanisms work. To the left hand side of the base there is a line of dark staining running vertically from one end to the other. There are two shrinkage splits, the first from the base running vertically around 7ins long, and there is a dark impression running horizontally from around the centre on the left hand side around 10ins long. General wear to the feet commensurate with age. Overall the item is structurally sound with little to no movement in the joints.
A large early 19th century figured mahogany break-front secretaire library bookcase; the upper section with four elliptical glazed doors revealing adjustable shelves, the base with a central fitted secretaire drawer flanked by one real and one faux drawer above figured panel cupboard doors below, on shaped bracket feet. 220 cm overall width x 64 cm deep x 258 cm overall height.Cracking to both side doors, feet broken with some parts missing, some feet appear to be later. Handle to secretaire drawer re-fixed and part loose on right handle.
