A late Victorian walnut secretaire bookcase, with detachable pediment above a pair of glazed doors enclosing adjustable shelves, the base with secretaire drawer above a pair of panelled cupboard doors and raised on a plinth base. Width across cornice 124 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The bookcase is in generally good original condition with only minor defects. The detachable cornice has a small loss to the bottom left hand corner below the foliate carving. There is also a further moulding loss on the right had return right at the back near the wall. The sides of the top are in generally good condition. The right hand side has a small 2 cm timber loss at the bottom edge in the centre. This will have been caused by lifting the top on and off the base. The base itself is in generally good order. There is an old stress fracture to the front top left hand corner of the top. There are numerous old marks also. The secretaire drawer is not warped. It operates as it should. The interior is complete. The leather writing surface is serviceable but scratched and scuffed. The panelled doors beneath have old stress fractures to timber joins. The right hand door has a slight warp at the bottom but in our opinion this is not particularly detrimental. The side panels of the base are in good condition. The plinth has significant veneer loss to the left hand return. The right hand side return is also loose with lifting veneer. We can see no evidence of any woodworm.

There is a minor insignificant warp to the upper half of the right hand door. The right hand door has one cracked pane of glass. The base is in generally good condition. There are some water marks to the top surface. The secretaire drawer is in good condition generally. There are minor veneer losses to the left hand and right hand top corners just above the drawer itself. The interior is in nice condition with the exception of the writing surface which is tired. A new leather would be advisable. All drawer fronts and cockbeading are in good order. The handles are original. The sides of the base have minor marks and scratches but no significant cracking or other issues. The piece is structurally very sound and all backboards are original. The right hand base return moulding is missing. Height 247 cm, depth 60 cm.
