A FINE GEORGE II BURR WALNUT SECRETAIRE CHEST ON CHESTIN THE MANNER OF GILES GRENDEY, CIRCA 1735The drawers with both cross and feather banding, with a carved Greek key frieze, the secretaire drawer with a leather inset writing surface, drawers and recesses188cm high, 110cm wide, 61.5cm deepA copy is available of a February 1959 invoice, number 8999 from Quinneys Ltd Walter Needham Antiques, Chester for £290.A closely related burr walnut chest on chest was sold in these rooms, 30th June 2021, lot 64, £14,300 (including premium). Condition Report: There are scratches, marks, knocks, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use.There are losses, observations and restorations including: the top is ebonised; there are repairs including small sections of replacement mouldings and veneers, some later staining and filler; the scarlet and gilt tooled leather inset is a later replacement; this restoration means that there are few losses; there is some evidence of worm; there are no signs of previous holes from handles and escutcheons, but their appearance and finish could suggest they are of a later date; the drawer linings are oak; the locks are probably later, though again there are no signs of previous locks and there is one key; the secretaire drawer fall front is hinged and has no springs or catches to hold it fast when it is not within the drawer recess; the sides and feet have some cracks with some repairs; some later staining to the interior base, and the underside of the base; the top has not been removed from the base for this inspection.Please see the additional photographs as a visual reference of condition.
