A North European figured walnut secretaire a abattant, late 19th century, the frieze drawer above a fall front enclosing a green leather skiver and an arrangement of small drawers, the lower section fitted two cupboard doors, raised on a platform base with castors, 106cm by 51cm by 155cmProvenance:It was acquired from a German artist (name unknown) by Edward (Edwin) Musgrave, the then Director of Leeds City Art Galleries and Museums. He was instrumental in Leeds Art Gallery being the first public institute outside London to acquire a painting by Francis Bacon.The desk was then bequeathed by him to William Thompson Oliver, Deputy Editor, Art Correspondent and Literary Editor of the Yorkshire Post (this will be a matter of public record), thence through the family to my late husband, Patrick Oliver.Variations in colour, particularly front section which is faded. Top section has a circular patch were the veneer is starting to lift. Several fine splits on top also. Natural? splits to end panels. Small section of veneer missing above the lock. General bruising and wear to the lower section consistent with age. 170912

A late Victorian mahogany desk, with centre writing slope with inkwells and pen slide above, flanked on either side by a cupboard with foliate and scroll carved panels, the slope front hinging to a secretaire interior and flanked on either side by a further gilt tooled writing surface and with three drawers with locks by “Hobbs & Co., London”, and raised on short turned legs with low shelf and raised on brass castors.
