Y A LOUIS XV KINGWOOD AND TULIPWOOD SECRETAIRE A ABBATTANT BY MARTIN-ÉTIENNE LHERMITTE, MID 18TH CENTURY Of serpentine outline, the fall opening to an arrangement of divisions and small drawers, twice stamped beneath the marble 'Martin Etienne LHERMITE' 115cm high, 84.5cm wide, 41.5cm deep Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions. Some old chips. old repairs, some small lossesThe secretaire has previously been thoroughly cleaned and re-polished. A later varnish has been applied. The colour overall has been faded/ lightened uniformly likely as a result. Some scratching and small losses to the outer edges of the marble top, mainly confined to the rear corners and rear edge where there is a slightly larger triangular chip approximately 1cm diameter. (see image) The marble is a later replaced but cut and moulded very well to fit the shape. The hinged fall is unlocked and can open but lacking a key. The lower doors are locked and lacking key so will need to be opened by a restorer or locksmith. We cannot guarantee what is contained in the cupboard therefore.Staining to the gilt tooled leather inset including some ink stains (see image) The lock appears original, where the screws for the lock lie under the leather, the use of the leather surface has lead to holes been created and adjacent marks and dark discoloration. The thin frieze immediately below the front edge of the marble top with old, losses, repairs and replacements, areas have been dark stained to disguise loss. The same has occurred in areas throughout the lowest frieze (between the feet) at the front and sides. Skillful treatment by a restorer could improve the appearance of these areas probably considerably. Condition Report Disclaimer
A GEORGE III MAHOGANY SECRETAIRE CHEST OF DRAWERS CIRCA 1770 The fall front secretaire drawer opening to an arrangement of small drawers and pigeon holes 103cm high, 98cm wide, 46cm deep Condition Report: Chest with the marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old splits and chips.Handles are replaced. There are filled holes visible to drawer fronts and sections of replacement timber inset to the interior of the fall from where previous fixtures sat. Locks appear original. No key is present, but all locks are open. the surface of the timber appears to have been cleaned and repolished at some point.Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition. A GEORGE III MAHOGANY SECRETAIRE BOOKCASE IN THE MANNER OF THOMAS CHIPPENDALE, CIRCA 1770 The hinged secretaire drawer opening to an arrangement of small drawers and pigeon holes 213cm high, 110cm wide, 54cm deep Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use.Some old chips, splits and losses.Some old repairs and replacements.Some additional old splits to lower rear corner of right side, and some additional dark marks and indented marks to the same panel and to the feet.Interior of cabinet section later relined.Light fittings installed into the roof of the interior and modern glass shelves replace original wooden shelvesLock to the cabinet door is of the period but probably associated as it has been cut to size. Key is present and operates upper door lock, secretaire drawer lock and one other. At least two of the drawer locks are period replacements.Feet appear to be original.Glass panels appear original, some possible later replacements. Two smaller panels with cracks (see images)All handles replaced and of period style. Marks from previous handles present to drawer fronts. Previous handle holes have been plugged to accommodate replacements.To the reverse side of the secretaire drawer front, the fixtures of the current handles have been covered with square-shaped fillets of timber.Please see additional images for a visual reference to condition. The estimate has been revised and this lot will be offered at the following estimate of £1,200 - £1,800.
