An Ayyubid brass magic bowl or 'poison cup' Egypt or Syria, 13th/ 14th Centuryof shallow rounded form engraved to the interior with talismanic diagrams and inscriptions, stars and images of a scorpion, snake, two-headed dragon and a dog, the exterior with a band of inscriptions to the rim 11.3 cm. diam. max.Footnotes:Inscriptions: to the centre, the basmalah; Qur'an, chapter LXXXIV (al-Inshiqaq), verses 1-parts of 4; text mentioning Colic; Qur'an, chapter ICIV (al-Sharh), verses 5 & 6; followed by magic words and letters; chapter LXV (al-Talaq), parts of verse 3; magic words and letters in Kufic and cursive, the seal of Solomon and magic squares with numbers. To the exterior, beginning with 'This blessed bowl is for' and then lists of what it is for and against, including the sting of serpent and scorpion, bite of a rabid dog, abdominal pains and colic, ending with if one drinks three times from it, one will be cured with God's help.The present lot is typical of the group of talismanic bowls known as 'poison cups'. Poison cups are never dated and are all attributed to Syria or Egypt. They are characterised by representations of a scorpion, serpent, a dog-like animal and two intertwined dragons along with magical symbols, squares and words. In baboon form, modelled in the round wearing a lunar disc and seated on a semi-circular base with attachment lug; accompanied by a wooden display base; traces of hieroglyphic inscription around the edge of the base; repaired. Gifted by Herbert Parsons (1870-1940) to his grandson, James Gibson (1926-2013). Inherited by the vendor and her brother, from their grandfather James Gibson.This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate no.200862. God of the moon, magic and writing, Thoth could take the form of a baboon or an ibis. In baboon form, he was associated with the animals who rise early in the day, and was thus linked to the sun god, Ra. The dedicatory hieroglyphic inscription on the base of this example includes the di and ankh signs meaning 'give life'. Comprising a folded length of thin leather or vellum, with lines of Ge'ez text in black and red ink, coloured figural illuminations at the top depicting the winged Archangel Michael brandishing a sword, wearing a richly decorated lembd as a covering cloak. See Heldman, M., Munro-Hay Stuart, C., African Zion, The sacred art of Ethiopia, Yale University Press, 1993, pp.65, 72.32 grams, 35 cm (13 5/8 in.). Stephen Keynes collection (1927-2017). Ex central London gallery. Ethiopian phylacteries or parchment scrolls combined apotropaic prayers and images. These ‘magic scrolls’ utilise only a few designs that derive from Christian imagery, namely the holy rider, the sword-bearing angel Michael, and the cross. Here the text asks intervention and protection from Saint Michael, commander of the heavenly Host. Interestingly, the accoutrement of the Angel reflects that of the military Ethiopian elite in 19th century A.D. [No Reserve]

Superb one owner GT3 Touring with the manual gearbox, 723 miles from new and finished in Shark Blue.For over 20 years, Porsche’s GT3 has cemented its legend within the 911 dynasty, one which enhances the 911’s natural penchant for performance with additional flair and emotion. Powered by a high-revving, naturally aspirated flat-six linked to the rear wheels by – ideally - a manual gearbox, the GT3 is the purist’s 911.In February 2021, Porsche introduced the GT3 version of the eighth-generation 911, the 992. The numbers were very impressive; 3,996cc, 24v, naturally aspirated flat-six, 503bhp @ 8,400rpm, 347lb/ft @ 6,100rpm, 6-speed manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive, 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds, 199mph and 22mpg, however, it’s not simply numbers that separate it from its predecessor, the much revered 991. A new front suspension design utilised a double wishbone set-up rather than MacPherson struts and rose-joints allowing Porsche’s engineers to increase camber stiffness, and give the front tyres a far more consistent surface contact patch. In order to maximise the benefit of the performance from the double-wishbone set-up at the front, the multi-link rear suspension was also totally revised. Weight was saved in a number of areas including lightweight glass, new front wheels, new rear fascia, stainless exhaust and a carbon rear lid resulting in the new car weighing the same as the 991 GT3 even though it's physically larger.In 2017 the ‘Touring Package’ was introduced giving a new focus to the GT3’s capabilities. It's brief, to refine the magic of the Motorsport department and make this 911 more suited to the road. Still retaining the winged GT3’s explosive 500bhp engine, the Touring’s more subtle styling proved captivating. The most obvious difference is the omission of the standard car's distinctive swan-neck fixed rear wing replaced by an automatically extending rear spoiler which generates downforce at high speeds whilst maintaining the classic 'flatback' 911 profile. In the case of the 992 GT3 there are only a few aesthetic details that distinguish the Touring from its be-winged sibling including painted front bumper inserts, aluminium window trim (rather than black anodised) and more interior surfaces trimmed in perforated leather and brushed aluminium.Offered here is, essentially, a brand new 992 GT3 Touring offered from its first and only owner and finished in Shark Blue with a black extended leather/Alcantara interior. At the time of cataloguing just 723 miles had been covered from new, and this particular example is fitted with the desirable manual gearbox. A RARE BLUE AND WHITE 'MAGIC FOUNTAIN' EWERFour-character Fu Shou Kang Ning mark, JiajingOf pear-shape with a long waisted neck below a galleried rim, painted in vivid tones of blue on each side of the body with an elaborate water fountain supported on a mythical qilin, the neck with upright plantain leaves, applied with an elegantly curved spout and arched strap-handle further decorated with floral scrolls. 32cm (12 1/2in) high.Footnotes:明嘉靖 青花噴泉麒麟紋執壺青花「福壽康寧」楷書款Provenance: an English private collection來源：英國私人收藏The Jiajing emperor is known to have been concerned with Immortality, hence many decorative motifs during his reign were associated with longevity. The precise meaning and origins of these fountains are unclear, but the motif appears to evoke the wish of extending life, or living forever. This theme is carried on by the mark on the base reading 'fu shou kang ning', which can be translated as 'wealth, long life, health and peace', implying almost that to drink from this ewer would extend one's own life and good fortune.These ewers also found their way to Europe where they were appreciated for their exoticism. An oil painting in the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, by Willem Kalf, circa 1660, depicts a still life with a very similar blue and white ewer with the same motif (acc.no.1981.77).A related blue and white ewer with similar motif, Xuande six-character mark, 16th century, is illustrated by J.Pope, Chinese Porcelains from the Ardebil Shrine, London, 1981, pl.99.
