AN EXTREMELY RARE AND FINE BAMBOO-VENEER RUYI SCEPTRE, QIANLONG PERIOD, IMPERIALLY INSCRIBED WITH A POEM COMPOSED IN THE BINGZI YEAR (1756)Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價Inscription: The poem Zhu ruyi, written by the Qianlong Emperor, is meticulously incised in three columns to the reverse. The inscription's quality is remarkably high, executed with a precision that only the Imperial workshops in Beijing were capable of achieving.‘My literary mind is that of the rhapsodies of Deyu, and my sense of Chan is that of the poetry of Jiaoran. Moreover, I possess perfectly natural joints, and am wholly free of protruding branches. The magic arts of Luo Gongyuan are but fantasies after all, but the gift of Sengshao is truly a suitable thing. I only like it where pure conversation occurs, as when I meet with noblemen.’‘Qianlong yuti’ (Imperial composition of the Qianlong Emperor)China, 1756-1795. The scepter shows a smooth, golden bamboo-veneer surface and is carved in two parts with an arched shaft terminating in a large head decorated with a flying bat suspending two cash coins (wu zhu) linked together by a ribbon in its mouth. The shaft is decorated with a stylized Shou character suspended from a chime and tied with a ribbon hanging from the character’s center, the base of the shaft with a central lotus bloom surrounded by ruyi and key-fret designs.Provenance: From an old private collection in the United Kingdom, acquired by the previous owner’s grandparents and thence by descent in the same family.Condition: Superb condition with expected minor old wear, minuscule flaking, some natural age cracks barely visible to the naked eye, and occasional light surface scratches. Naturally grown golden-brown patina overall.Weight: 80.1 g Dimensions: Length 32.7 cmAuction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 7 April 2010, lot 1728 Price: HKD 15,780,000 or approx. EUR 2,624,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing Description: An imperially inscribed bamboo-veneer ruyi-scepter Qianlong period, poem composed in the Bingzi year (1756) Expert remark: Compare the poem, which is identical to the one written on the present scepter. This ruyi was assumed to have been the original ruyi scepter that served Qianlong as the inspiration for his poem Zhu ruyi. However, this assumption is clearly refuted by the existence of the present scepter as well as other examples listed. AN ANHUA DECORATED CLAIR-DE-LUNE ‘DRAGON’ BOTTLE VASE, TIANQIUPING, QIANLONG MARK AND POSSIBLY OF THE PERIOD 乾隆款天藍釉暗花龍紋天球瓶,或爲乾隆年代Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價Expert’s note: The present vase exhibits the strictly formal and highly precise stylistic language of the Qing court, particularly that of the 18th and earlier 19th century, characterized by the restrained and uncluttered decoration and featuring decidedly Imperial elements such as the two five-clawed dragons, band of ruyi heads, scrolling clouds, crashing waves, and monochrome glaze.China, c. 1760-1840. The globular body supported on a narrow foot and rising to a tall cylindrical neck with slightly everted rim. Neatly incised with two sinuous dragons above crashing waves chasing the magic pearl amid flames and wispy clouds, all underneath a ruyi border at the lip. Applied overall with an almost perfectly even and unctuous Clair-de-lune glaze, pooling nicely in the recesses. The foot rim unglazed. The recessed base with an underglaze-blue six-character seal mark da Qing Qianlong nianzhi.Provenance: New York trade, by repute acquired from a local estate. Condition: Excellent condition with some old wear, expected irregularities and firing flaws, such as a few microscopic dark blue spots, and tiny surface scratches here and there.Weight: 341.1 gDimensions: Height 21.3 cmAuction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Bonhams London, 14 May 2015, lot 221Price: GBP 10,000 or approx. EUR 16,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writingDescription: A small anhua decorated clair-de-lune-glazed bottle vase, Qianlong seal markExpert remark: Note that the relatively high result for this vase suggests that bidders believed the vase was actually of the period, despite a lack of dating from Bonhams. Note the smaller size (14.7 cm).

Attributed to Josef Hoffmann, Austrian 1831-1904- Two figures in an Italianate landscape, with a river and classical buildings beyond; oil on canvas, indistinctly signed 'Hoffmann' (lower right), 79.5 x 62.5 cm. Provenance: Property from a European Private Collection. Note: The present work recalls the Arcadian scenes which make up much of Hoffmann's output, with extensive Italianate landscapes populated by figures in Classical dress amongst architectural features and dramatic scenery. This befits Hoffmann's experience designing stage sets for the New Vienna Court Opera in the late 1860s, including for productions of Romeo & Juliet and The Magic Flute. He also later produced landscape murals for the Hernstein Castle, the Palais Epstein, and the Parliament building in Vienna.

A genuine and substantially original Mini in need of some recommissioning and offered with No Reserve. Designed as project ADO15 (Austin Drawing Office project number 15), the Mini came about as a result because of the fuel shortage caused by the 1956 Suez Crisis. Petrol was once again rationed in the UK, sales of large cars slumped but the market for German 'bubble' cars boomed. Leonard Lord, the somewhat autocratic head of BMC, reportedly detested these cars so much that he vowed to rid the streets of them and design a 'proper miniature car'. Alec Issigonis had been working for Alvis, but had now been recruited back to BMC in 1955 and, with his skills in designing small cars, he was a natural for the task. The team that designed the Mini was remarkably small: along with Alec Issigonis, there was Jack Daniels (who had worked with him on the Morris Minor), Chris Kingham (who had been with him at Alvis), two engineering students and four draughtsmen. Together, by October 1957, they had designed and built the original prototype, which was affectionately named 'The Orange Box' because of its colour. The Mk1 Mini (only known as the Mk1 after the arrival of its successor) was the first version of BMC's Mini model and is characterised by its sliding windows, external door hinges and 'moustache' grille. In the UK, the Mk1 was produced between 1959 and 1967 at the Longbridge Plant near BMC's headquarters and was sold under both Austin and Morris marque names. The proposed engine size was originally 948cc, as used in the Morris Minor and Austin A35, however Leonard Lord thought that the 90mph top speed was excessive and thus reduced the engine size to 848cc, resulting in a more manageable speed (for the time) of 72mph!The car presented here is a 1963 Morris Mini Mk1 (848cc), chassis #MA2S4218353, first registered in September 1963. Being an early car, endearing features like the floor-starter and the 'magic wand' gear lever are all present and correct. With only three previous keepers, our vendor bought the car in 2012 from the widow of the preceding owner with an indicated mileage of 57,746, believed to be genuine - which seems wholly commensurate with its overall condition. We understand it to have been restored by the previous owner in the late 1990s, completed in time to enjoy the Mini’s 40th Anniversary in 1999. It's accompanied by a history file, is running and driving and still starts 'on the button', but it did fail an MOT in 2017 and has been in storage ever since.Obviously in need of some work, this charming British classic would make a very worthwhile project.Specification Make: MORRIS Model: MINI MK1 848CC Year: 1963 Chassis Number: MA2S4218353 Registration Number: 7442 KX Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 8AM-U-H598853 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveClick here for more details and images
