Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Flag First Praised As "Old Glory"" Signed lower center. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commerative Cover for Old Glory's Proudest Moments postmarked on the anniversary March 17, 2002. The legend of "Old Glory" begins with the War of 1812. The exploits of fast, new naval frigates such as the U.S.S. Constitution or "Old Ironsides", impressed the world, especially residents along America's coastlines. The memory of these magic ships and America's triumphant flag must have been strong in William Driver, a ship's cabin boy born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1803. At the age of 21, Driver was experienced enough to become master of the merchant ship, Charles Doggett. For his birthday on March 17, 1824, his mother and a group of Salem girls presented him with a fine new flag for his ship. There were speeches, and a crowd watched as Captain Driver hoisted his new colors to the masthead. The ship's salute gun banged. Against an azure sky the brilliant, 24-star flag unfurled magnificently. Moved by the poetry of the moment, Driver nicknamed his flag "Old Glory." In 1834, after years of sailing, he retired to Nashville, Tennessee where he proudly displayed the flag at his home. During the Civil War, Confederate sympathizers tried unsuccessfully to confiscate the flag, but Driver and his friends had sewn it into a comforter. Shortly before he died in 1886, the old sea captain reportedly placed a bundle into his daughter's arms, saying "This is my ship flag, Old Glory..." The flag was kept as a family treasure until 1922 when it was placed in the Smithsonian Institution. Carefully preserved, the original "Old Glory" remains an important piece of Americana. Image Size: 15 x 12.75 in. Overall Size: 18.5 x 16 in. Unframed. (B16967)
Jim Butcher (American, B. 1944) "Frosty the Snowman" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. Nature fashions each small snowflake with delicate beauty as it drifts down silently to blanket the waiting earth in a thick cloak of whiteness. It fills the cold crisp air with cheer and wonderment, and boldly announces the most heartwarming holiday season of the year ... Christmas. The snowy wonderland of Christmastime is also a time for winter fun ... for skates and skis ... for shimmering icicles and roaring fires ... and for the very special magic of plump, jolly snowmen! The thrill of building snowmen during the chilly Christmas season has long been a tradition that rekindles the childhood spirits of both young and old. The delightful magic of turning soft, fluffy snow into a plump, jolly friend has led many to wonder if there could be any truth in the popular Christmas song about the most famous snowman of all ... Frosty the snowman, was a fairytale they say. He was made of snow, but the children know how he came to life one day ... There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found, for when they placed it on his head, he began to dance around ... Even though all snowmen are not as magical as Frosty was, each one is just as delightful. Every snowman ever made reflects the unique personality of that special person that creates it. Although, in some very rare instances, as depicted in this artwork, the same plump, jolly snowman may have a split personality. Image Size: 11.75 x 14 in. Overall Size: 18.5 x 20 in. Unframed. TOMOCHIKA: A RARE IVORY THREE-CASE INRO IN THE FORM OF A TEMPLE BELL AND DEPICTING BENKEI, WITH IVORY NETSUKE AND OJIME The inro by a member of the Tomochika family, signed Tomochika 友親Japan, Tokyo, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)The inro impressively carved in the form of the bell of Mii-dera, with Benkei trying to carry the massive bell and a young Yoshitsune running behind him, likely they are being chased by the shrouded samurai on the other side of the inro, all surmounted by a coiled dragon writhing around a magic jewel (tama) inlaid in coral, cleverly masking the nerve plug and natural cracks. With a finely carved ivory ojime in the form of Daruma and an ivory netsuke of a resting farmer.HEIGHT 8 cm (the inro), HEIGHT 4.2 cm (the netsuke), HEIGHT 1.6 cm (the ojime)Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few minuscule chips to edges, small natural age cracks.Provenance: British collection.According to legend, the bell of Mii-dera temple in Kyoto was stolen once by the famous warrior monk Benkei, who dragged it up to the summit of Mount Hiei. There, he tried to strike it and was angered when the bell rang, “eeno eeno”, which means “I want to go back” in the Kansai dialect. Benkei then threw the bell down to the bottom of the valley, causing it quite some damage which has remained to this day.Accurate biographical information about Benkei's career is difficult to obtain, mainly because the legends of his exploits are so deeply entrenched in Japanese Mythology. Benkei will forever be the companion of Japan's greatest folk hero, Minamoto no Yoshitsune (1159-1189) and the passing years will enhance rather than diminish his status, further clouding his role during the political intrigue between Yoshitsune and his brother, Yoritomo.

Also compare to a signed netsuke by Sanko, showing very similar faces, of Ikkaku Sennin and Lady of Benares, illustrated in Meinertzhagen, Frederick / Lazarnick, George (1986) MCI, Part B, p. 693.
