Harold Knight RA, ROI, RP, RWA (1874-1961) - Head of a Girl (Lily Poyser), in profile to left, charcoal, E.S.K. blindstamp, 34 x 23.5cm, on the reverse part of a charcoal drawing by the same hand of a statue in a niche [see lot 1134], unframed Provenance: Frederick Riley (1867-1915) an art teacher, by whom acquired from the artist when a student at Nottingham School of Art, 1888-1895; thence by descent to the present vendor. As a young artist in his 20's, Harold Knight was both a spirited and sensitive draughtsman. This precocious talent, utterly devoid of sentimentality was noticed by many of his contemporaries. Laura Knight in her autobiography (The Magic of a Line, 1965) was to recall a remark of Philip Connard RA, one of the South Kensington examiners, about the tedious task of wading through student work sent from the provinces, quoting his fellows' saying "Never mind - just wait until the work from Nottingham". In 1895 Harold Knight declined the offer of a full time teaching post at Nottingham School of Art. Having obtained a British Institute Travelling Scholarship he left for Paris to study under Jean Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant at the Academie Julien To be included in the catalogue raisonne currently being compiled by Dame Laura Knight's great nephew R John Croft FCA (who's assistance is gratefully acknowledged in the cataloguing of this lot) Several faint horizontal lines beneath the subjects ear are impressions of creases and stands slightly proud, as distinct from scratches.
Harold Knight RA, ROI, RP, RWA (1874-1961) - Life Model Nottingham School of Art, charcoal, 52 x 37cm, laid down on the original mount with rectangular purple ink stamp inscribed Student's surname - Knight and Age 21, Registration No 3597, Subject No 8c2, unframed Provenance: Frederick Riley (1867-1915) an art teacher, by whom acquired from the artist when a student at Nottingham School of Art, 1888-1895; thence by descent to the present vendor This highly accomplished life study by Harold Knight is almost certainly of the half blind Jack Price, or Mark Wharley, both of whom were hired by the Nottingham School of Art as models for its Life Class. At this period only male students could attend the School's Life Class. His fellow student Laura Knight recalled (Oil Paint and Grease Paint, 1936) "If the men worked from the living figure I had to go in to the Antique Room; the hatred of those plaster figures stays with me today - I never got any benefit out of their study..." After she left the School, Laura Knight employed Jack Price as a model. He was the first naked figure she drew. In lieu of a fee, she gave him some of her studies to sell (The Magic of a Line, 1965) Since Harold Knight was born on the 27th November 1874, the present drawing, which gives his age as 21 means the South Kensington Exhibition must have been sometime from 25th November to 31st December 1895 To be included in the catalogue raisonne currently being compiled by Dame Laura Knight's great nephew R John Croft FCA (who's assistance is gratefully acknowledged in the cataloguing of this lot) Good condition
Harold Knight RA, ROI, RP, RWA (1874-1961) - Head of a Girl (Lily Poyser), oil on canvas laid on board, E.S.K. blindstamp, 38.5 x 28cm, on the reverse a later framer's label of F W Charman and Sons Art Dealers, Frame Makers, etc 75 Wey Hill Haslemere and in their mid 20th century wood frame Provenance: Frederick Riley (1867-1915) an art teacher, by whom acquired from the artist when a student at Nottingham School of Art, 1888-1895; thence by descent to the present vendor Lily Poyser (also the subject of lot 1132 and 1134) was the model for Laura Knight's The Yellow Lady, 1891, later exhibited at the Royal Academy Retrospective Exhibition of Paintings and Drawings by Dame Laura Knight 1965, Catalogue No 9. In her autobiography (Magic of a Line, 1965) Laura Knight recounted an incident at Nottingham School of Art when "A sensation came about one life class later on: This happened when Wilson Foster [Life Class master] having reached Harold's profile drawing of a lovely young girl - Lily Poyser - stayed there for a long time without saying a word, eventually to tell that Harold's study was beyond criticism". Lily Poyser's three sisters also posed for both Harold and Laura Knight receiving wages of a halfpenny (article in Nottingham Evening Post, February 25 1997) To be included in the catalogue raisonne currently being compiled by Dame Laura Knight's great nephew R John Croft FCA (who's assistance is gratefully acknowledged in the cataloguing of this lot) Minor scratches and marks, dirty, entirely original condition and unrestored, presumably placed in to the modern frame by Charman & Sons in the mid 20th c

1973 Jaguar XJ12 SaloonRegistration no. RYD 999LChassis no. 2C1484BWOdometer reading: 39,630MOT: 29/03/2022*Jaguar's flagship luxury saloon*39,630 miles recorded*Much recent workLaunched to much acclaim in 1968, the XJ6 refined concepts embodied by previous Jaguar saloons to create a car rivalling the best offered by Mercedes-Benz. Although introduced with XK six-cylinder power, it had always been Jaguar's intention that its flagship saloon would accommodate the E-Type's new all-alloy V12 engine, and the resulting XJ12 duly appeared in July 1972. With a top speed of over 135mph courtesy of the 5.3-litre V12's 272bhp, the newcomer combined high performance with a level of luxury unmatched by many a less-accommodating Grand Tourer costing several times as much. An improved rear legroom version was introduced in August 1972. Finished in Glacier White, the car presents well having been in the hands of only three recorded owners from new, and with these cars a short ownership history is always reassuring. The interior retained the original blue leather and is in very pleasing order. Works carried out in 2015 included renewing the suspension and brake pads. More recently the car has benefited from a tune up and service. It comes with numerous MoTs dating from the 1980s and 1990s; a few receipts; some DVLA correspondence; and a current MoT valid until March 2022. The mileage is recorded at 39,630. The XJ12 brought even greater refinement to a startlingly brilliant model and still impresses after nearly half a century with its magic carpet quality. 1969 MGB RoadsterRegistration no. GPP 488GChassis no. 164437CEngine no. 18GB-U-H-9259Odometer reading: TBCMOT: Exempt*Restored condition*Rebuilt engine*Requires re-commissioningOutstandingly successful despite, or perhaps because of, its relative simplicity, the perennially popular MGB remained in production for 18 years while rivals came and went. Attractively styled, cheap to run and easily maintained by the home mechanic, the 'B' carried on MG's traditional role of providing affordable, sports car motoring for the ordinary enthusiast.Conceived in the late 1950s and launched in 1962, the MGB was mechanically similar to the preceding MGA, though with unitary construction bodyshell instead of its forebear's separate chassis. To compensate for the newcomer's increased weight, the existing four-cylinder B-Series engine was stretched to 1,798cc, while the MGB's aerodynamically efficient lines made the most of the 95bhp available to achieve a top speed which just bested the magic 'ton'. A 'right first time' design that changed little over the years, the MGB had enjoyed sales totalling in excess of 500,000 cars by the time production ceased in 1980. Its popularity undiminished today, the classic MGB is one of the easiest sports cars of its era to run and maintain in the 21st Century, being served by a worldwide industry of spare parts and services providers. Finished in red with red-piped black interior, this MGB Roadster is described by the private vendor as in very good restored condition. The engine has been rebuilt and the engine bay is very tidy, while the car is reported as running and driving well. Unused for some time, it will require re-commissioning and the customary safety checks before returning to the road. Offered with a V5C document.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 79/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Magic Lantern Slides25 Boxed SlidesThrough South-Western Texas with a Camera (original lecture by Valentine & Sons, 36 slides, 1885).Incomplete set of hand-coloured slides, most slides annotated with a printed title and the initials J.V. (James Valentine). Although research indicates that this lecture was published in 1885, it is likely that the photos were taken earlier, circa late 1870s, early 1880s, during the American frontier period. The image of the Alamo during its mercantile warehouse period shows that it was under the stewardship of Honore Grenet, who owned the Alamo between 1876 until his death in 1882, when his business was purchased by the firm Hugo & Schmeltzer. This image must have therefore been taken in that 6-year window so is a very rare early image of this iconic building. Another image of historic importance is the Capote Farm Mansion, we can find no other images of the mansion although the Capote Farm was a significant landholding.Subjects include:The Capote Farm Mansion, Cowboys with rifles and dogs, various Capote Farm images: maize fields, woods, Kraal, Texan Horse and rider etc. Also: Negro hut, Texan Cowboy, big horn cattle, cowboys at a waterhole, Sabinal River, 'tent life', posed group of settlers, a settlers house, San Antonio second mission, a cotton field (drawing), San Antonio-the River. Details of the ornate features of the 2nd Mission, The Alamo (warehouse) S.A military plaza, Houston Market House, Schulenburg.Note: Valentine's of Dundee produced Scottish topographical views from the 1860s, and later became internationally famous as the producers of picture postcards. Valentine received a commission from Queen Victoria to photograph a set of 40 views of Highland scenery and in 1868 was appointed as the Royal Photographer.Condition report: They are all the same size. They are all annotated with their titles on printed on labels (see new photos) some of which give the location. They have been hand coloured. They can be viewed at the David Lay saleroom. See DL website for viewing appointments.
Magic Lantern slides and the accompanying printed lecture in magazine format."Life among the Darkies" 44 glass slides, 37 black and white, seven hand-coloured, boxed (from an original set of 48)Supplied by E G Wood, 1-2 Queen Street, Cheapside, London. c.1900.The photographic images on these slides are remarkable documents of social history, capturing African American and some white agricultural workers and their families in Carolina, Virginia and Mississippi. Although the subjects, many barefoot and in threadbare clothes, clearly live in great poverty, there are many beautiful images. Subjects include: workers picking cotton, families posing in the cornfields, women doing laundry, drawing water, worker's cabins, farm animals etc. The racist trope of newly-emancipated slaves eating watermelon is a recurring theme and there are several images of children and babies messily enjoying the fruit. Please note: The language and racial stereotyping used in the printed lecture is offensive and reflects the attitudes of the time in which it was created.L492 Condition report: Excellent condition, two slides cracked (see photos) but all others clear, sharp and unfaded. No damp damage to speak of. These have probably sat untouched in their box for decades. The lecture pamphlet is yellowed and tatty around the edges, creased down the middle but is still very usable and pages hold together.
