Cartier: A 'Trinity' ring The three interconnecting 18 carat tri-coloured gold bands, signed Cartier, maker's mark, numbered, European convention mark, Swiss assay mark, Cartier size 50Accompanied by a Cartier case. Louis Cartier was a gentleman who curated an electric and fascinating group of friends and counted amongst his close circle in Paris the famed aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, Jeanne Toussaint and the poet Jean Cocteau. As the story goes, one evening in the early 1920s, Cocteau described dreaming of the rings of Saturn to Louis Cartier. He asked Louis to transform the magic of those celestial rings into a small ring for his little finger. The engineering behind perfecting the smooth rolling motion of three bands gliding over each other, without catching the wearer’s skin or becoming rigid required an engineering masterstroke, one which Cartier’s workshop on the Rue de la Paix was by now well used to fulfilling. In 1924 Louis presented Cocteau with a small ring of three interconnecting bands, devoid of any further decoration. Cocteau declared Louis was “a subtle magician who captures fragments of the moon on a thread of the sun”. Cocteau would go on to wear that ring for decades to come, making him the perfect ambassador of what would become one of the most sought-after rings for both men and women.Initially platinum was used for one of the bands but it was later replaced by white gold. The design was known at the time as bague trois ors (triple gold ring) or a bague trois anneaux (triple-ringed ring). Just the following year, the design was enlarged into a bangle. The first bangle was purchased in 1925 by Elsie de Wolfe, a famed American interior designer. In 1925 American Vogue ran editorial on Cartier's new jewellery including an image of the model Luella Kendall Lee wearing two stacked Trinity bracelets and a ring. Lee would go on to marry one of Cartier New York's top sales executives, Jules Glaenzer. Vogue described them as “amazingly chic” and also “very moderate in price”. Highlighting the conscious choice to begin to curate a wider client base. Fans of the Trinity collection include amongst others King Charles III, Gary Cooper, Princess Diana, Grace Kelly and King Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor, who wore two stacked upon his little finger.

The 1944 submariner's 'Far East' D.S.M. group of seven awarded to Chief Stoker R. J. Phebey, Royal Navy, who had previously been 'mentioned' in 1943 for his services during Eastern Mediterranean war patrols in H.M.S. TaurusTaurus served in the Mediterranean and the Pacific Far East during the Second World War, sinking several Japanese merchant vessels including the Japanese submarine I 34 and later damaging Japanese submarine I 37Phebey had previously served on the mine-laying submarine Rorqual, the first submarine to carry supplies to the beleaguered island of MaltaDistinguished Service Medal, G.VI.R. (Ch.Sto. R.J. Phebey P/KX 80408); 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Africa Star, clasp, North Africa 1942-43; Burma Star, clasp, Pacific; Italy Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45 with M.I.D. oak leaf, mounted as worn, very fine (7)D.S.M. London Gazette 25 July 1944, the original citation states:'For daring, endurance and resource in the conduct of hazardous and successful operations in His Majesty's Submarines against the enemy.'M.I.D. London Gazette 19 October 1943.Richard John Phebey was born at Richmond, Surrey on 10 September 1910, the son of Richard and Maud Phebey. Educated at the Vineyard School, Richmond he enlisted in the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd class on 5 August 1930 and was posted to the submarine base Dolphin on 13 March 1934. He was mostly shore based at submarine depots until 25 May 1939 when as Stoker Petty Officer he was posted to the mine laying submarine Rorqual.Rorqual - Mission Malta - Magic Carpet RunsSent to the Mediterranean in 1940, Rorqual began laying minefields and attacking enemy shipping. Amongst the shipping vessels lost to mines laid by Rorqual were the Italian merchants Loasso, Celio, Leopardi, and Salpi; the Italian Navy water tankers Verde and Ticino; the Italian pilot vessel F 34 / Rina Croce, the Italian torpedo boats Calipso, Fratelli Cairoli, Generale Antonio Chinotto, Altair and Aldebaran; the Italian auxiliary submarine chaser AS 99 Zuri, the German troop transport Ankara; the French merchant (in German service), P.L.M. 24; and the French fishing vessel Coligny. The Italian merchants Caffaro, Ischia and the brand-new Italian merchant Carbonello A. were damaged by mines laid by Rorqual. Rorqual was also active in attacking enemy shipping herself, torpedoing and sinking the Italian tanker, Laura Corrado; the Italian submarine Pier Capponi; the Italian merchants Cilicia and Monstella; the German tanker Wilhemsburg and the French merchant (in German service) Nantaise. Rorqual's torpedoes also damaged the Italian auxiliary cruiser Piero Foscari, unsuccessfully attacked an Italian submarine and the Italian merchant Securitas and sunk two Greek sailing vessels with gunfire. In August 1940 she attacked an Italian convoy, missing the Italian merchants Verace and Doris Ursino with torpedoes. Following this failed attack Rorqual was heavily depth charged by the Italian torpedo boat Generale Achille Papa.In January 1941 Rorqual attacked the tug Ursus and a floating battery mounted on a lighter. The lighter could not be torpedoed, as she was of too shallow draught for the normal depth setting of the torpedoes, and the only other weapon the Rorqual had was her single 4-inch gun. Rorqual surfaced at about 500 yards range. Her opening attack hit the Ursus and damaged the battery. Heavy fire from the damaged tug forced Rorqual to shift her fire from the battery and engage the Ursus again, forcing her crew to abandon her. Though badly damaged, the floating battery opened fire and forced the Rorqual to dive. She then fired a torpedo set to run on the surface, only to find that the torpedo developed a gyro failure and returned on its own tracks. Rorqual had to dive deep to avoid it. When last seen, the Ursus was sinking and the battery was on fire. The battery however did not sink and was later towed to Dubrovnik. Due to her large size and space within the mine casing, Rorqual was well suited to carrying stores and in June 1941, after loading at Alexandria, became the first submarine to carry supplies to the beleaguered island of Malta. In all she performed, at considerable risk to the submarine, 5 storing runs to Malta in 1941 from Alexandria and in 1942 from Beirut. These were known as "magic carpet runs".Phebey remaining in 'the silent service' was next posted to the T Class submarine Taurus (P 339) on 9 June 1942 shortly before her official launch on 27 June 1942.Taurus - an eventful period of serviceShe served in the Mediterranean and the Pacific Far East during the Second World War. Whilst serving in the Mediterranean, she sank the small French merchant Clairette, the Spanish merchant Bartolo, the Italian merchant Derna, the French tug Ghrib and two barges, the Portuguese Santa Irene, the small Italian tanker Alcione C., the Italian sailing vessel Luigi, twenty-eight Greek sailing vessels, and the small Greek ship Romano. She also damaged a further two sailing ships and the Greek merchant Konstantinos Louloudis. It was during this period off the Greek coast she had the unusual distinction of engaging a Bulgarian cavalry unit while bombarding a small port. Phebey received a 'Mention' for his service aboard her during her Eastern Mediterranean war patrols.Taurus transferred to the Far East on 9 September 1943 where she sank the Japanese submarine I 34 10 miles off Penang Island. On 11 January 1944 she joined the 14th Submarine Flotilla to operate against the Japanese in the Malacca Straits and west coast of Thailand where she sank two Japanese tugboats, a barge and the Japanese salvage vessel Hokuan I-Go. She also laid a number of mines, which damaged the Japanese submarine I-37 and sank the Japanese transport ship Kasumi Maru. Phebey was richly rewarded with the D.S.M. for the period January to April 1944 which was presented by the King on 17 October 1944.On 10 August 1945 he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. In an email which accompanies the group, Phebey's son confirms that his father lost his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal following a motorbike accident in 1956.Subsequent careerThe war over, Phebey undertook instructor roles within the service initially with Elfin and later several spells on Trenchant being discharged on 24 July 1956. Leaving the Navy Phebey worked initially for Johnson & Johnson at Hilsea before becoming a Royal Park warden at Richmond Park. His last role was as a boiler man at Stowe school.Phebey died at Aylesbury in November 1988; sold together with an extensive archive of copied research including his copied service papers, copy patrol reports for Taurus, 6 November 1943 to 27 April 1944 and the book 'Dark Seas Above' by J.F. Gibson.…

▲ William Scott RA (1913-1989) 'Grey, Black and White', 1959 signed 'W. Scott' l.r., gouache, watercolour and collage 48 x 66cm, unframed Provenance: With Hanover Gallery, London, 1960; Mr and Mrs P Wakefield; Sotheby's, London, 1 October 1997, lot 265; the property of a private collector. William Scott’s 'Grey, Black and White', 1959, exemplifies his distinct approach to abstraction - balancing restraint with expressive energy. While often associated with simplicity, his late 1950s and 1960s works embraced texture, layering and gestural application. He experimented with contrasts - thick and thin paint, smooth and rough surfaces - allowing imperfections to become part of the composition. In this piece, Scott abandons defining outlines, letting forms emerge organically. Muted tones of black, grey, brown, and off-white create a quiet tension, while his raw, unfinished surface reflects his belief in 'the beauty of the thing done badly'. Paint is pushed, scraped and layered, revealing his process and rejecting a polished aesthetic in favour of something more tactile and immediate. Despite its abstraction, Scott’s work never fully detaches from reality. As he stated, 'I cannot be called non-figurative while I am still interested in the modern magic of space…the things of life'. In 'Grey, Black and White' he captures this ambiguity, hinting at stone walls, landscapes, or familiar objects, while remaining open to interpretation. The artist's paintings from this period focus as much on the act of painting as the final image. His careful yet spontaneous approach invites viewers to engage with space, texture and form in a way that feels both structured and free. Scott's 'Grey, Black and White' stands as a testament to his mastery of abstraction, where surface and tone create an atmosphere of quiet dynamism and subtle depth. The Right Honourable Iain Macleod hand written and signed letter dated 1969. Iain Norman Macleod was a British Conservative Party politician. Iain Norman Macleod (11 November 1913 - 20 July 1970) was a British Conservative Party politician. A playboy and professional bridge player in his twenties, after war service Macleod worked for the Conservative Research Department before entering Parliament in 1950. He was noted as a formidable Parliamentary debater and-later-as a platform orator. He was quickly appointed Minister of Health, later serving as Minister of Labour. He served an important term as Secretary of State for the Colonies under Harold Macmillan in the early 1960s, overseeing the independence of many African countries from British rule but earning the enmity of Conservative right-wingers, and the soubriquet that he was "too clever by half". Macleod was unhappy with the "emergence" of Sir Alec Douglas-Home as party leader and prime minister in succession to Macmillan in 1963 (he claimed to have supported Macmillan's deputy Rab Butler, although it is unclear exactly what his recommendation had been). He refused to serve in Home's government, and while serving as editor of The Spectator alleged that the succession had been stitched up by Macmillan and a "magic circle" of Old Etonians. Macleod did not contest the first ever Conservative Party leadership election in 1965, but endorsed the eventual winner Edward Heath. When the Conservatives returned to power in June 1970, he was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in Heath's government, but died suddenly only a month later. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £5.99, EU from £7.99, Rest of World from £9.99

Attributed to Diego de la Puente (Mechelen, Belgium, 1586 - Lima, Peru, 1663)‘Infant Jesus of Passion’ Oil on canvas.41,5 x 32,5 cm.Diego de la Puente, born in Mechelen (Belgium) in 1586, is a European painter who developed his career in the Viceroyalty of Peru from 1620, after training in the workshop of Flemish masters in Europe, such as Joos van Cleve and Gossart. His arrival in Peru coincided with the expansion of European artistic influence in South America, where the Jesuits and other religious orders were looking for artists to decorate their churches and missions. The artist is a sublime example of the use of great mastery of Flemish art to introduce the evangelizing message to the Andean world.Diego de la Puente worked intensely for the Society of Jesus, producing a series of religious artworks that were distributed throughout various regions of the viceroyalty, including Lima, La Paz and Santiago de Chile. Likewise, explains historian and curator Teresa Villegas de Aneiva, he was “one of the key figures in the training of the local schools in Trujillo, Lima. Ayacucho, Cuzco, La Paz, Potosí and Chuquisaca, cities to which he was assigned by his superiors of the Jesuit Order during the period 1620-1662, the year he died in Lima.”This painting has stylistic and technical characteristics that we find in signed and documented works by Diego de la Puente. The most evident is the treatment of the faces. The Child is depicted with a delicate and serene face, with an elongated and soft structure, typical of the Flemish style that De la Puente brought to Latin America. It is similar to the face of the “Archangel St. Michael”, currently in the National Museum of Art of Bolivia. These paintings, in fact, share “a very personal style, characterized by a rapid brushstroke, rich palette and a choice of shades ranging from cold green to warm brown”, this is how Villegas de Aneiva describes the Archangel and we would use the same words to describe this Child.De la Puente uses light to highlight the central figure of the composition, creating a contrast with the darker background, which emphasizes the spiritual aspect of the scene. This technique is common in the Baroque, and De la Puente handles it with skill, adapting it to Christian iconography in the Peruvian context. As far as iconography is concerned, in this canvas we see the Christ Child carrying the instruments of the Passion, based on an engraving by the Flemish artist Hyeronimus Wierix (1563 - pre 1619). The Christ Child travels along a path full of thorns, holding the Cross and carrying a small basket with the instruments of the Passion. These engravings or prints became famous and possibly one of them fell into the artist's hands, inspiring this small devotional painting. It reflects an apocryphal, unreal and timeless situation of the iconography of the Passion Child, immersed in the crude and terrible reality of a joyless childhood, but theologically founded according to Thomas Aquinas, “the first thought be for the Cross”: a “Pensative Child” whose dream is the Cross. That Child becomes tangibly humanized “descending and walking” at our side, he offers himself to the viewer carrying his inexorable and distant end, he offers himself to a society that, since the Middle Ages and the Baroque, lived preparing for death. The art of that time engendered an attraction for the macabre and morbid that resulted in small and genuine artistic creations, like this one, the image of the Child, presenting his fatal destiny, and that is a fair comparison with the feeling of impotence and frustration of the baroque people before the uncertainty of every day. A small painting that devoutly encloses the thought of the 17th and 18th centuries of anguish, disillusionment, fear and the need for hope that flooded the mood and consciousness of a society with a fetishistic religiosity close to magic. The cross he carries on his right shoulder reads in Latin and gold: “OPUS EIVS, CORĀ ILLO” (“His work, it is / resides in that heart”).Reference bibliography:- Gisbert, Teresa. An outstanding Second War submariner’s D.S.M. and Second Award Bar awarded to Leading Telegraphist V. G. Backman, Royal Navy, for his ‘distinguished service, outstanding courage, and devotion to duty’ in successful patrols in H.M. Submarines Porpoise and Tally-Ho Distinguished Service Medal, G.VI.R., with Second Award Bar (JX.129189 V. G. Backman. L.Tel. R.N.) minor edge nick, otherwise about extremely fine £2,400-£2,800 --- Only 147 Second Award Bars were awarded to the Distinguished Service Medal during the Second World War. D.S.M. London Gazette 29 December 1942: ‘For distinguished services in successful patrols in H.M. Submarines.’ D.S.M. Second Award Bar London Gazette 20 February 1945: ‘For outstanding courage, skill, and undaunted devotion to duty in successful patrols in H.M .Submarine Tally-Ho.’ Vernon George Backman was born in Neath, Glamorgan, on 20 March 1911 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 8 February 1927. Appointed a Telegraphist, he transferred to the submarine branch in July 1932, and was promoted Leading Telegraphist in H.M. Submarine Proteus on 2 November 1937. ‘Porpoise Carrier Service’ - D.S.M. Backman joined H.M. Submarine Porpoise on 17 May 1939, and served in her during the Second World War from the outbreak of hostilities until 12 February 1943. After participating in hazardous mine-laying operations off Norway, he was awarded the first of his D.S.M.s for assorted war patrols in the Mediterranean between November 1941 and October 1942, latterly under the command of Lieutenant Leslie Bennington, D.S.C., R.N. - who would win a D.S.O. and a Bar to his D.S.C. in the same period. Much of this service was spent on the Malta run, namely hazardous but essential supply trips with fuel, munitions and general supplies for the besieged island. David Thomas’s Submarine Victory takes up the story: ‘The spring of 1941 was a period of incessant air raids upon Malta, and it was not until Hitler launched his foolish Russian campaign in mid-summer that the German raids ended, although the Regia Aeronautica carried on the aerial battle. One other method of supplying Malta existed - submarines. At Alexandria the minelayers of the 1st Flotilla and the large 'P' Class boats had given sterling service, but they were now called upon to act as submerged cargo carriers, a service which became known as the Magic Carpet Service to Malta. The first submarine to take on this duty was Porpoise, and her contribution was the greatest of all those boats which participated. She ended the Magic Carpet Service with her own special flag bearing the initials P.C.S. denoting Porpoise Carrier Service. The islanders looked forward to the arrival of convoys and our cargo-carrying submarines with such avidity that their arrival was cause for cheers and waves of welcome. When such interest is taken in naval matters by landlubbers in times of stress and anxiety an odd story or two intrudes now and then. Legend has it that on one occasion Porpoise arrived with her torpedo tubes stuffed full with sausages. And for all we know, legend may be truth! Indeed, these submarines were crammed to the nth degree by sailors knowing they had only to suffer the intensely cramped conditions for a few days. Every effort was made by the sailors to stuff into every nook and cranny as much as was humanly possible consistent with the safety of the boat - and even this factor may have had a blind eye turned upon it in the interests of succouring Malta. In addition to Porpoise the four large submarines Cachalot, Parthian, Regent and Rorqual were adapted for this service. The supplies of petrol they carried filled a proportion of their fresh-water tanks, fuel tanks and even main ballast tanks. One section of their batteries was even removed to provide more space for cargo. Nor were these cargo-carrying runs purely operations of mercy. They were patrols - offensive in nature - usually with tubes loaded with twenty-one-inch torpedoes and not sausages. The gallant Porpoise suffered the experience of more than eighty depth-charges in four days on one of these missions. She made in all nine of these trips.’ That mission occurred in mid-August 1942, the Admiralty describing the enemy’s relentless assault as ‘one of the heaviest depth-charge attacks ever made on a British submarine’: in fact Porpoise endured the detonation of no less than 87 depth-charges. The assault commenced after Porpoise had torpedoed the Italian merchantman Lerici about 120 nautical miles off Libya, two escorting enemy destroyers and two torpedo boats delivering a protracted 60 depth-charge attack. Notwithstanding the ferocity of the enemy’s response, Porpoise renewed her attack on enemy shipping off Tobruk, as a result of which she attracted the wrath of yet another enemy destroyer: ‘The destroyer passed overhead and dropped a depth-charge which exploded very close to the submarine. Porpoise was badly shaken, some lights were extinguished and large quantities of corking were dislodged from the deck head, and shortly afterwards fumes and smoke were observed coming from No. 1 Section of the Main Battery. No. 1 Battery was isolated to prevent the spreading of fumes through the submarine. After the first depth-charge attack the destroyer continued in a northerly direction for about three minutes. She then turned back for another run. She then passed astern and dropped four depth-charges which were unpleasantly close and damaged No. 2 and No. 3 Sections of the Battery. Further attacks then followed in quick succession and on each occasion the enemy appeared to be in firm contact. The enemy made a total of 12 attack runs but depth-charges were only dropped during the best runs. Altered course to 210 degrees. The enemy was not able to make contact as easy as before but when she did the attacks were as carefully conducted as before … Altogether the enemy dropped 27 depth-charges. All were very close’ (Captain Bennington’s report refers). On discovering the extent of the damage caused to Porpoise when he was able to surface that evening, Bennington signalled for assistance and the crippled submarine was escorted into Port Said by two destroyers and a fighter escort. Tally Ho - Bar to D.S.M. Transferring to H.M. Submarine Tally Ho on 13 February 1943, where he was soon joined by his old skipper Bennington, Backman served in her until January 1945, initially on war patrols off Norway, Gibraltar and the South of France but afterwards in the Far East. It was for gallant deeds in this latter theatre of war that he was awarded his second D.S.M., while Bennington added a Bar to his D.S.O. and a Second Bar to his D.S.C. in the same period.
