Lot 578

1973 MGB GT Coupé Registration no. NYY 373L Chassis no. GHD5-298114G Engine no. 10881Footnotes:Conceived in the late 1950s and launched in 1962, the MGB was mechanically similar to the preceding MGA, though with unitary-construction bodyshell. To compensate for the newcomer's increased weight, the existing B-Series engine was stretched to 1,798cc, and the MGB's aerodynamically efficient lines made the most of the 95bhp available to achieve a top speed which just bested the magic 'ton'. A 'right first time' design that changed little over the years apart from a minor facelift for 1970 and the adoption of plastic bumpers - to comply with US legislation - for 1975, the MGB enjoyed an eighteen-year production life and sales totalling in excess of 500,000 cars. One of the last chrome bumper models, finished in Teal Blue with Yellow/Sand leather interior, this MGB GT was purchased privately in 1978 and has remained in the same family's possession since then. In 1997 the car was restored, being stripped back to bare metal and rebuilt at a cost of circa £13,000. Stored under cover, the 'B' has rarely been used since the rebuild's completion but has been regularly maintained. The private vendor describes the car as in good condition throughout, although now showing some signs of its age. Offered with restoration bills and a V5C.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

JOAN PONÇ BONET (Barcelona, 1927 - Saint-Paul, France, 1984).Untitled.Mixed media on paper.Signed on the back.Size: 70 x 65 cm; 95 x 88 cm (frame). In his work Ponç manifests himself as a sorcerer artist, who conceives art as magic, as an extraordinary power, an incantation, something supernatural. But the great Catalan master was not only that; his art is also an exploration of the negative, an attraction to the perverse and diabolical, a reflection of a universe plagued by monstrous and evil beings, satanic and perfidious spirits, a reflection of the fascination his author felt for evil.A painter and draughtsman, Joan Ponç trained in Barcelona, in the studio of Ramón Rogent and at the Academy of Plastic Arts with Ángel López-Obrero. After devoting himself to painting and drawing in anonymity, he held his first individual exhibition in 1946 at the Galería Arte in Bilbao, which was to mark his definitive establishment on the national art scene. In 1948, together with Tharrats, Puig, Cuixart, Tàpies and Brossa, among others, he founded the avant-garde group Dau al Set. Selected by Eugenio D'Ors, he took part in the Salón de los Once in Madrid in 1951 and 1952. In 1952 he took part in the Hispano-American Biennial, and the following year he spent some time in Paris, where he met Joan Miró and managed to exhibit at the Musée de la Villa. On the latter's recommendation, Ponç gained access to Brazilian artistic circles, settling in São Paulo from 1953 to 1962. In 1954, the year Dau al Set disbanded, he held an exhibition at the city's Museum of Modern Art, which was so successful that the organisation acquired all his works. In Brazil he visited the equatorial jungles, where he was impressed by their fauna, especially insects, which he incorporated into his imagery. In 1955 he founded the Taüll group with Marc Aleu, Modest Cuixart, Jaume Guinovart, Jaume Muxart, Mercadé, Tàpies and Tharrats. After returning to Catalonia due to illness, as a fully established artist he shows his work in New York, Rio de Janeiro, Bonn, Paris, Frankfurt, Geneva, Antibes and various Spanish cities. In 1965 he won the International Grand Prize for Drawing at the São Paulo Biennial. Ponç's paintings present phantasmagoric images that are both painful and tortured, in which the subconscious is the protagonist. For the painter, art is nothing more than an introduction to the mystery and secrets of the spirit. More of a draughtsman than a painter, his work is extremely detailed and meticulous. Ponç's production can be divided into six periods: the Dau al Set period (1947), the Brazilian period (1958), the metaphysical-geometric period (1969), the period of the metaphysical characters (1970), the acupainting period (1971) and a final period of synthesis (1972).

SOLEDAD FERNÁNDEZ (Madrid, 1949).Untitled, 2001.Oil on canvas.Artwork reproduced in "Soledad Fernandez", Sammer Editions, 2007.The piece encloses the book with the reproduced work.Signed in the lower right corner. Signed and dated on the back.Measurements: 89 x 116 cm; 112 x 139 cm (frame). This painter from Madrid is considered by the critics as one of the best realist painters of the moment, one of her favourite themes being the human body, especially the female nude, always wrapped in paper or cloth, which gives the work a certain magic and mystery. Art critics such as Santiago Amón, Francisco Prados de la Plaza, Francoise Tempra, José Pérez Guerra, José Pérez Guerra, Carlos García Osuna, Santos Torroella, Javier Rubio, Mario Antolín, M. L. Camboy, Tomás Paredes, Antonio Morales, Julia Sáenz-Angulo, Rafael Perelló-Paradelo, Agustín Romo, J. Marcaro Pasarius, Héctor López, Ángel Azpeitia, Antonio Lisboa and David Amor, among others.in 1949 he moved to Collado Villalba (Madrid), where he currently lives. In 1960, and for seven years, she studied in the studio of the Sevillian School painter José Gutiérrez Valle. She is, therefore, a "workshop" painter. Later she continued drawing at the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid and attended several contemporary art competitions. In the 80's she visits and studies art in Paris, London, Rome and Venice, each day going deeper into the techniques she had already learnt in Madrid. After several exhibitions of lesser importance, in 1987 he exhibited in London at the Sammer Gallery and later in Madrid, El Escorial, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Zaragoza, etc. He also attended national and international fairs such as Washington (USA), Chicago (USA), Santander (Spain), Valencia (Spain), Miami (USA), etc. In 1987 he was awarded the first prize for foreign painting (ex aequo) at the XXIX International Competition "Grolla d'Oro de Treviso", Venice, and in 1989 he won the first prize at the VI Durán Painting Prize Competition. His works can be seen in the following museums: Musée Quentovic (Le Touquet, France), National Museum of Fine Arts (Valletta, Malta), Cathedral Museum (Medina, Malta), Museo Bayo (Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz - Spain), Museo de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (Madrid, Spain) and Museo de Dibujo "Castillo de Larrés" (Huesca, Spain).

Circa 4th-8th century A.D. A conical ceramic bowl bearing a series of painted Aramaic incantations arranged in circumferential bands to the internal wall, incorporating a trapezoidal panel containing a demon figure. 275 grams, 15 cm wide (5 7/8 in.). Acquired before 1988. From an important deceased gentleman’s collection by descent. Aramaic incantation bowls are particular to the Sassanian period and have been found in regions of modern Iraq. These simple ceramic bowls, also known as magic bowls, each contain an Aramaic inscription, written in ink, which spirals from the centre. The bowls seem to have played an important part in domestic life. For example, during excavations in Nippur in 1889, one or more incantation bowls were found in each house together with domestic artefacts, most often in doorways or under floorboards in the corner of rooms. The bowls are predominantly apotropaic, and the inscriptions tend to protect their owners from misfortunes such as those faced in child-birth, illness and evil spirits.

Lot 397

9th-10th century A.D. A gilt silver pendant of discoid form with integral suspension loop, displaying the god Odin in the centre, gripping a raven in each hand, pseudo-corded border. Cf. Hammond B., British Artefacts Volume 2 - Middle Saxon and Viking, Witham, 2010, p.57, item 1.5.3-f; cf. Korshyn, V.E., Yazcheskye Priveski Drevnei Rysi X-XIV Vekov, Moscow, 2013, item M.2.02. 1.5 grams, 22 mm (7/8 in.). UK gallery, acquired in the 2000s. Property of an English gentleman. Odin, also known as Woden in Old Saxon, the chief god of Eddic mythology and the most versatile of the gods. He is the father of the gods, the god of poetry, the god of the dead, of war, magic, runes and ecstasy. The numerous names for Odin in Old Norse literature exemplify his diversity. According to Snorri Sturluson in the Gylfaginning Odin is one of the first of the gods to be created. Odin is called the All Father because he is the father of all the gods. He lives in Asgard from where he can look over the whole world and is considered to be omniscient, and because of this he is known as 'the extremely wise one.' Odin's attributes are his spear, Gungnir, a ring known as Draupnir, his blindness in one eye and his hat and cloak, all of which form his stereotypical image. Odin's two ravens, Huginn and Muninn, meaning Thought and Memory, are likewise firmly established attributes from the end of the Migration Age onwards, as illustrated in bracteates, pendants and picture stones. The two ravens fly over the whole world and return at breakfast bringing Odin news of many things, and through this he is known as Hrafnagud, or the raven god. [No Reserve]
