Bettesworth, et. al., 1721. 2nd edition, 8vo., engraved plate, contemporary panelled calf, rebacked, red morocco lettering piece, slight paper discolouration throughoutNote: Aubrey's Miscellanies is a collection of chapters on hermetic philosophy.The author was fascinated by the occult and supernatural, and 'Miscellanies' is a broad-ranging study, with sections on auspicious and inauspicious dates, omens, communications with angels, and magic, as well as a study of 'second sight' (the ability to foresee future events through divine inspiration) that is reputed to be the first treatment of the subject to appear in print. The chapter on "magic" includes a few short references to witches and witchcraft: notably "Vervain and dill, Hinders witches from their will", and several stories recounting methods used to hinder witchcraft. The book was first published in 1696. This second edition, revised and enlarged, includes an account of the author's life.

Magic Fun Book. The Magic Fun Book, volumes 1-2 [all published], 1st editions, D. C. Thomson & Co., Ltd, [1940-1], printed in red, blue and black, contents toned, original pictorial boards, extremities very slightly rubbed, upper outer corner of volume 1 front board bumped, 4to An exceptionally bright complete set. Publication of the Magic comic and hence the Magic Fun Book annual ceased in 1941 when the title was incorporated into the Beano. The new joint annual was published under the title The Magic Beano Book until 1949, after which the word 'Magic' was dropped and the annual became known simply as The Beano Book. Provenance: both volumes given by David Coupar Thomson (1861-1954) founder of D. C. Thomson & Co., Ltd, to Robert Melville, his surgeon at the Dundee Royal Infirmary; bequeathed by Melville to the current vendor (a family friend) circa 1993. (2)
