PHOTOGRAPHYMUYBRIDGE (EADWEARD) Autograph letter signed ('Eadweard Muybridge'), to W.J. Chadwick Esq., Hon. Secretary of the Manchester Photographic Society, having just returned from lecturing in Oxford he thanks him for his appreciation of his lectures and would be '...delighted to place the subject of animal Locomotion before a Manchester audience...', going on to describe a busy schedule of engagements across the country and outlining his terms ('...My terms for a Lecture in Manchester before an audience not exclusively of Scientists or artists, will be 22 ½ guineas...'), ending by complaining that the Manchester Athenaeum is advertising a lecture without his authority, 4 pages, light dust-staining at folds otherwise in clean fresh condition, on 'University of Pennsylvania' headed notepaper, 8vo (205 x 125mm.), 38 Craven Street, Charing Cross, 2 November [18]89Footnotes:After the successful publication of the seminal work, Animal Locomotion in 1887, Muybridge embarked on a whirlwind publicity tour taking in the UK, Ireland and America. According to notices in the local newspapers he gave a series of lectures in Manchester from January to the end of February 1890 illustrated by lantern slides and including demonstrations of the zoöpraxiscope (www.stephenherbert.co.uk).The recipient of our letter, W.J. Chadwick, was the Secretary of the Manchester Photographic Society and a frequent contributor to photographic journals such as Amateur Photographer, and wrote The Magic Lantern Manual, published in 1898. Chadwick was also a pioneer of the newly discovered technique of x-ray photography. From 1897 to 1898 he set up a studio in his premises at 2 St Mary's Street and photographed patients using the new Röntgen ray process on behalf of the Manchester Infirmary. The patient was charged 5s each for images of hands, feet, ankles and elbows, and 10s for larger parts of the body (ed. (17 3/4 x 13 5/8in.)Footnotes:For me the circus is a magic show which passes by like affairs of the world and melts. A circus is disturbing. It is profound. Marc ChagallChagall's fascination with the circus dates from his childhood in pre-revolutionary Vitebsk where travelling acrobats and equestrians often came to entertain the crowds at the village fair. Chagall always remembered the sad scene of a travelling troupe, a father and his young children, performing a handful of clumsy, acrobatic stunts. The public walked by unimpressed, and Chagall saw them walked away, unappreciated and empty-handed. Chagall feared that this could well be the fate of anyone who wanted to pursue the life of an artist. The idea of Cirque came from Chagall's dealer and publisher, Ambroise Vollard, for whom he had already illustrated two other series of prints: Fables and Dead Souls. Vollard was a circus lover and had his own box at the Cirque d'hiver in Paris to which he often invited Chagall and his wife Bella. Due to the dealer's sudden death in a car accident, Chagall who had already started working in a suite of gouaches on this theme, abandoned the project until decades later when the Greek born publisher Tèriade convinced him to complete the work.In 1962, Chagall began working on a series of lithographs that came to be known as Le Cirque. The artist was fascinated with colour lithography as it allowed unlimited painterly freedom. He drew directly on the lithography stone, and the resultant prints reflected the spontaneity of his brushstrokes and draw lines. The accompanying texts were also written by Chagall and complimented the pictures confirming an artist's book which was finally published in 1967.Chagall's lithographs of Cirque can be regarded as his best achievement as a printmaker, with its vibrant colours and fantasies on the circus theme where characters are mixed with the Chagallian standard symbols of goat, cock, pair of lovers ascending in the sky, donkeys and horses forming the dreamlike compositions for which he is famous.Click for an instant shipping quoteThis lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

* ALEXANDER GOUDIE RP RGI (SCOTTISH 1933 - 2004), TOLEDO LANDSCAPE oil on canvas, signed, titled label verso image size 51cm x 61cm, overall size 63cm x 73cm Framed. Note: Alexander Goudie was born in 1933 at Paisley and, as a child, showed a prodigious talent for drawing. He studied at Glasgow School of Art when William Armour was head of drawing and painting and David Donaldson was the ubiquitous influence. Goudie, as a student at Glasgow, demonstrated his extraordinary ability. He received the Somerville Shanks Prize for Composition and, later, his draughtsmanship and sense of colour was recognized with the award of the Newbery Medal. As a young artist he grew up admiring three great masters, Sir John Lavery, George Henry and James Guthrie; all artists who had bridged the gap between Glasgow and Paris. It was these artists’ glorious virtuoso control of oil paint that appealed to Goudie, as well as their genre and realist subject-matter. Alexander Goudie was elected a member of the Glasgow Art Club in 1956 and a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1970. He painted a portrait of the Queen for the Caledonian Club, London (1992/93), and exhibited widely, showing at Harari and Johns, in London, the Fine Art Society, Glasgow, and the Musee de la Faience, in Quimper. Sir Timothy Clifford, former Director of the National Galleries of Scotland, said: ''At his best, Goudie could draw better than any of his rivals in Scotland. There was magic and vision in his art and, I expect, history will be kind to him.'' Collections: 79 of Goudie's paintings are held in UK public collections.

Lot 678

Magic wand stick, tunggal panaluan. This belonged to the magician priest, datu, in Samosir. We bought it in Prapat, on the shore of lake Toba, and was assured it belonged to the datu two generations previously. 110 x 3cm. Late 19th or early 20th c. Notes: we were told to look after this wand with great care as it had strong powers, which it indeed has. Shortly after importing it in the mid '90, We loaned it to a gallery in the north of England. After two months the curator called us to say we must take it away because it was upsetting many people and causing 'bad luck'. When I collected it I found it displayed in a dark corner with no view of the sun and clouds. Since then we have had it in the corner of our living room with a clear view through a window, it has been very happy and bought us 'good luck'.
