The composition draws the viewer into a dynamic interplay between realistic settings and dreamlike imagery, exemplified by the detailed butterfly, colorful tropical fish, and geometric objects scattered throughout the space. The artwork is framed in a gold-tone ornate frame with floral carvings, complementing the luminous tones of the painting and enhancing its display presence. Fernando de Jesus Oliveira, widely known as Ferjo, is celebrated for his distinctively surrealistic and imaginative paintings. His works often merge vivid realism with fantastical elements, creating dreamlike environments that captivate audiences worldwide. A protege of Salvador DalÃ's and a student of cubism, Ferjo incorporates homages to iconic artists like Picasso, Matisse, and Van Gogh in his pieces, often blending their styles with his unique artistic voice. Illustration for The Colour Of Magic book by Terry Pratchett. Ill Paul Birkbeck 1939-2019. Twoflower the tourist in a shop. 40 x 50 cm. Not signed. ABOUT PAUL BIRKBECK; an appreciation, written by one of his daughters and published in the Guardian following his death. "My father, Paul Birkbeck, who has died aged 80, was an artist and illustrator whose work is familiar to those of a certain generation brought up on BBC childrens TV programmes such as Crystal Tipps and Alistair, Play School and Jackanory. His distinctive style and keen eye for detail ensured that he became one of the BBCs most-used artists through the 1970s and 80s. Born in Woolwich, south-east London, Paul attended Brighton College and Epsom School ofArt. After completing his national service, he also became the banjo player for the Dedicated Men Jugband, who signed to Pye Records in 1965. The bands single, Boodle Am Shake, did not trouble the charts but Paul soon began designing sleeves for Decca Records. In 1965 working with BBC childrens TV he became a prolific illustrator for its programmes. For Jackanory he illustrated 14 stories, including A Dog So Small (read by Judi Dench) and Peter Pan, (some in this sale), as well as the BBC Sunday afternoon Bible stories series In the Beginning. His work for Jackanory continued for many years. He created the memorable opening titles for The Vikings in 1980, presented by Magnus Magnusson, and the iconic Miss Marple series, starring Joan Hickson. Paul also drew the backgrounds for the ground-breaking TV series Jane, starring Glynis Barber, which mixed cartoon backgrounds with live actors and was based on the 1940s comic strip of the same name. (some in this sale). In 1991, as well as supplying illustrations, he was in front of the camera playing himself each week in the BBCs six-part childrens TV history programme Now Then, an educational show that cleverly brought our ancestors to life. Paul taught illustration at Leicester Polytechnic, Epsom College and the Royal College of Art, but continued to work in TV, including delivering the titles for the Stanley Baxter Show on Channel 4. He branched out into book illustration with Salman Rushdies 1990 childrens fairy tale Haroun and the Sea of Stories, for which his lavish pictures were much lauded, not least by Rushdie. My father spent the latter part of his life on personal commissions. His work appeared at the Keith Chapman Gallery, London, in Royal Academy summer shows and Sunday Times watercolour exhibitions between 2003 and 2008, and in the Mall Galleries Discerning Eye exhibitions. PROVENANCE The artworks in this sale have been consigned by his family. NOTES: The pictures in this sale were prepared in various mediums often used by the artist and often in conjunction with one another, including, pen and ink, crayon, water-colour, gouache, pastel, and oil and acrylic paints on card or on paper. The auctioneers acknowledge the help of his family in cataloguing this collection, and where-ever known each picture has been listed under its broadcast designation. but the vendors do not guarantee that all attributions in this respect are correct. The family do however guarantee that the pictures, both signed and unsigned are the work of Paul Birkbeck. All sizes are approximate.

* STUART MCALPINE MILLER (SCOTTISH b. 1964), FROM THE EVIL WITHIN limited edition digital print on paper, signed in silver ink and numbered 43/100, from the Revelations : A Portrait of Magic Seriesmounted, framed and under glass image size 81cm x 63cm, overall size 101cm x 82cmNote: certificate of authenticity is included with this lot.Note 2: Scottish artist Stuart regularly hits the headlines with his Pop Art paintings. Fusing cartoons with themes of idealism and consumerism, his multilayered artworks blend the past with the present through layers of figurative imagery, text and symbols. His release, Revelations: A Portrait of Magic, depicts the central characters of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. Stuart's McAlpine Miller’s spectral style has been described as ‘supernatural realism’ by the BBC and Radio 2 art critic Estelle Lovatt, who also praised its 4D aesthetic, adding that he has “one of the most creative minds in art today”. Using subtle tones of paint, he creates the illusion of transparency. The overall effect is similar to looking through a glass bottle, distorting the image and presenting a different version of the same subject. In turn, a far-fetched reality is created, highlighting the unrealistic expectations of today’s society. A graduate of the prestigious Glasgow School of Art, Stuart is an admirer of Old Masters such as Caravaggio and Hieronymus Bosch but is particularly inspired by one of the leading exponents of Pop Art, Andy Warhol. Stuart says: “Warhol’s views on mass consumerism and the way he translated these into his art is something I really relate to. I hope my art does something similar and stands the test of time.” Inspired by JK Rowling's Harry Potter novels, Stuart’s Revelations: A Portrait of Magic collection has captured best-loved characters including Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Albus Dumbledore, Draco Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange. Stuart says: “The art of illusion and magic reveals itself through the unified bond of the three central characters. As we continue to work in unison, we open the doors to an unimagined future, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. A new era lies ahead, as yet unrecognised but already awaiting our arrival.”In 2011, Stuart was chosen as artist-in-residence by the world-famous Savoy hotel after its major refurbishment. During his time there, he produced the collection A Time For Reflection: The Savoy Suite, which offered a unique insight into the hotel's patron, including Alfred Hitchcock, Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin. This popular release for Castle Fine Art was followed by Lost Lives/Split Personalities, which depicted some of history's most famous musicians including David Bowie, Amy Winehouse, Freddie Mercury and George Michael. Music took on a new meaning for Stuart when he began playing the piano seriously. Stuart says: “Music has for me, like many others, greatly influenced my own approach to my art, and the potential it creates within. The emotion that music can reveal allows the listener to transport themselves to a time, a place and a feeling. Art can do the same. We just have to open our minds.” The piano and art took on a new significance for Stuart when he was commissioned by Paul McCartney to paint the piano which he used on his 2004 European Tour. Stuart’s talents also saw him work on several advertising campaigns including Renault, McVities and Virgin; he also painted a triptych of The Alternative Last Supper used as backdrop for the main dining scene in Stephen Berkoff’s 1998 film Decadence. Stuart McAlpine Miller has commissions and collectors around the world, and has exhibited internationally, including Connaught Brown, the Catto Gallery, Kings Road Gallery, Rebecca Hossack Gallery and Duncan Miller in London; Ruth O'Hara and Hoerle-Guggenheim in New York and the SOTA Gallery, Hong Kong, as well as through the Castle Fine Art network of galleries in the UK.
* ALAN DAVIE CBE RA HRSA RWA (SCOTTISH 1920 - 2014), MAGIC VILLAGE NO.7 oil on board, signed, titled and dated 1994 versoframedimage size 29cm x 38cm, overall size 34cm x 43cmLabel verso: Gimpel Fils, London Note: Davie was a Scottish painter, he as a painter at Edinburgh College of Art from 1938 to 1940, initially favouring poetic imagery and coming into contact with modernism at exhibitions held in London of works by Picasso (1945; V&A) and Paul Klee (1945; Tate). He explored a diverse range of activities, however, before returning to painting from 1949 to 1953 he earned his living by making jewellery and in 1947 he worked as a jazz musician, an activity he continued in later life. He wrote poetry during the early 1940s. From 1953 to 1956 Davie taught in London at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, where he became interested in African and Pacific art. As early as 1958 Davie emphasised the importance in his work of intuition, as expressed in the form of enigmatic signs. During the 1960s, both in paintings and in coloured lithographs, he represented such images with increasing clarity at the expense of gestural handling. In 1971 he made his first visit to the island of St Lucia, where he began to spend half of each year and which brought Caribbean influences to bear on his suggestive imagery, as in Bird Gong No. 10, Opus 730 (1973; London, Brit. Council). Taking on the role of a disinherited shaman, Davie created a synthesis of mythologies from a variety of cultures for a modern civilisation devoid of its own village myths.
