RANTEI: A VERY RARE WOOD NETSUKE OF KADORI MYOJIN WITH NAMAZUBy Hogen Rantei, signed Rantei 蘭亭 Japan, Kyoto, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) A large and compact netsuke depicting Kadori Myojin clambering atop a namazu trying to calm its movements by pressing down its head with a hyotan (double gourd), wearing only a fundoshi (loincloth), the man's legs wide apart, his muscular body finely outlined, their eyes inlaid. Generously excavated himotoshi underneath, signed in the typical manner of the artist in sosho (cursive script) RANTEI. LENGTH 6 cm Condition: Very good condition, minor surface wear, a minuscule chip to one gill. Provenance: European collection. Wood netsuke by Rantei, who earned the honorary Buddhist title of Hogen during his lifetime, are rare, his favored medium for netsuke being ivory. Furthermore, the present subject seems to be unrecorded. Legend has it that certain types of catfish (namazu) are responsible for the earthquakes that plague the islands of Japan. When aroused, these creatures would contort their bodies in such a way that gigantic tremors shook the area for miles and miles. The Shinto deity Kadori Myojin usually attempts to prevent such catastrophe with the help of his magic gourd. Literature comparison: Compare a related ivory netsuke of a man with blowfish by Rantei, note the closely related facial features, illustrated in Arakawa, Hirokazu, The Go Collection of Netsuke. Tokyo National Museum, 1983, p.84-85, no. 150.

GHOSTBUSTERS II (1989) - Screen-matched Titanic Model MiniatureA screen-matched model miniature of the R.M.S. Titanic from Ivan Reitman's supernatural comedy sequel Ghostbusters II. The Titanic and its ghostly passengers appeared at the New York docks after the evil slime under the streets of the city began to cause widespread chaos. The ship is intentionally distressed to look like it has been at the bottom of the Atlantic for decades, with a large gaping hole on the right side. There are a couple of small lights and some clear perspex rods on the deck through which light would have emanated, giving a ghostly glow, although these are no longer functional. The ship has some wear from age and use, and several of the resin panels and railings are no longer present on the sides of the ship. STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN (1982) - Screen-matched Light-up Battle-damaged USS Enterprise Hull Insert Model MiniatureA screen-matched, light-up, battle-damaged USS Enterprise hull insert section model miniature display from Nicholas Meyer's Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, its immediate sequel, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. After taking control of the USS Reliant, Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban) opened fire on the Enterprise's secondary hull, severely crippling the ship. While models of the Enterprise from the production of Star Trek: The Motion Picture were used throughout filming, this ornately detailed, hand-painted model miniature was constructed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) to appear specifically battle-damaged during the attack sequence in The Wrath of Khan. It was then reused for insert shots of the ship in both The Search for Spock and The Undiscovered Country. The battle-damaged section screen-matches to shots in the third film, while its many lights screen-match to shots in the sixth. This electronic display consists of the hull section model miniature and two plastic-panelled wood wing pieces with miniature illuminating spotlights all mounted to a particleboard base marked "These bulbs are 3 1/2 volts max!" designed to control small lights installed throughout the model. The electronic base features two Starfleet emblems and five switches labelled "Main", "Interior Lights", "Exterior Lights", "Arm Photon", and "Fire Torpedo" which activate various illuminating sections of the hull. The model itself is constructed of resin, wood, paper, and panelled plastic with internal steel and aluminium components, some of which are exposed around the battle-damaged area. The lot exhibits some signs of use and handling, including scuffed and discoloured paint, loose panelling, and scratched wood. STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI (1983) - Leia's (Carrie Fisher) Production-used Slave CostumeLeia's (Carrie Fisher) production-used slave costume from Richard Marquand's Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Princess Leia was forced to wear a dancing girl costume while enslaved by the vile gangster Jabba. The famous bikini costume was sculpted by Richard Miller, the chief sculptor at Industrial Light & Magic, based on designs by co-costume designer Nilo Rodis-Jamero. Miller approached the costume with a jeweler's methodology and produced wax sculptures of the sculpted elements that could be shaped to fit Fisher exactly, from these wax masters he produced test castings in various resins and then cast final components in a red-colored urethane rubber. This costume is made up of production-used elements from the sculptor's collection including a test casting of the ornamental harness top piece made from white resin; a bottom piece made up of four sections (the front and side sections are cast in urethane, and the back plate is an original wax piece); a urethane bracelet; a spiral-snake upper armband that is an original wax element, and a pair of prototype beige leather lace-up boots. These prototype boots were worn by Fisher in costume fittings tests. The costume's textile elements - including the brown suede lining and cross cord lacing on the top, and the two burgundy silk skirt veils - are reproductions made to complete this production-used costume. Accompanying the lot is a framed print of a behind-the-scenes photograph of Fisher in the costume and the prototype boots, and a signed letter of authenticity from Miller, in which he describes his creative process. The lot exhibits wear, including discolouration, paint-wear revealing the costume's white resin and red rubber structure, and splits in the rubber armband revealing the wire armature.
