2007 ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM DROPHEAD COUPE. Registration Number: XXI 37, Chassis Number: SCA2068058UH07002, Engine Number: 60583963 . This Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé is the second of this model ever to be produced, of only 3,000 to be made in Goodwood. The first car off the production line was sold for $2,000,000 at auction in Florida and XXI37 was used for the press launch. In 2015, the Phantom Drophead was the most expensive Rolls-Royce model, retailing at $533,000. Three Drophead Coupés were used in the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony, with British Pop Stars Jessie J, Tinie Tempah and Taio Cruz all singing from them. 'This is a truly unique car and one that exudes top-notch pedigree. Just seeing one is a real occasion, and that's before you get behind the wheel.' Car Magazine. Luxury and driving experience are obviously paramount in the design of the Phantom Drophead. It is a prime example of how BMW managed to rejuvenate the Rolls-Royce brand post-acquisition. It started out life in 2004 as an experimental display model called 100EX, built to celebrate Rolls-Royce's centenary. The clamour from enthusiasts to put the car into production was so strong that the first Drophead, remarkably similar to the 100EX, appeared in 2007. It made a triumphant appearance at the Detroit Motor Show and was much heralded by the automotive press. Among its unique features It has its own dedicated lightweight aluminium space frame, exclusive to the Drophead model, which accommodates the convertible design and provide extra stiffness. Inspired by the beautiful Riva luxury boats, the car has a yacht-like appearance with a teak tonneau roof cover and door caps. Front opening coach doors make it easy to access the rear seat and can be opened and closed at the press of a button.Luggage is housed within a picnic boot, a split tail compartment that opens in two parts giving easy access to the of space. The tailgate also provides a comfortable seating platform for two adults when lowered. Careful engineering of the folding soft-top roof means that it stows in a small space, and the luggage compartment remains unaffected regardless of whether the roof is up or down. The fabric hood is the largest of any modern convertible car and its acoustic insulation is exemplary. Five layers of material lined with cashmere ensure that the cabin remains a serene space, even at speed. The scale of the car is matched by the massive 21 inch wheel rims. Rolls-Royce set out to make a car curated to the individuality of each driver, with thousands of options available for each build. Indeed, XXI37 features some of the most expensive ones, which is befitting for a press launch car. The car is finished in a beautiful combination of Admiral Blue metallic with a brushed steel bonnet. This bonnet is machine finished at the factory to give a uniform grain, before undergoing extensive hand polishing to achieve a perfect sheen. At the rear, the teak decking is treated by Rolls-Royce with a carefully blended mix of oils. This preserves a natural finish and a long-lasting lustre that is as beautiful as it is hardy. The interior is finished with a beautiful rosewood veneer dash and cream leather upholstery. The details inside are remarkably "Rolls-Royce", notably the engraved Phantom silver logo and stunning umbrella holders in both doors. The exterior has a fine white coach line painted with an exceptionally steady hand. Under the bonnet is clean example of the massive 6.75 litre 435bhp V12 engine, a widely regarded extraordinary machine. The engine that has huge amounts of power and yet remains quietly dignified. Capable of 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph, the car exhibits incredibly high performance. At the same time, it is so quiet when idling that you would think the engine was switched off. The drive quality is so supreme that the experience is often referred to as the "magic carpet ride". There is ample service history supporting the car, with only 39,000 miles driven, it has clearly been well maintained and always garaged. An original brochure and recent service records are also present with the car.In the Phantom Drophead, Rolls-Royce have created the ultimate convertible model for luxury touring, a car that epitomises prestige. Production ceased in 2016 and the company has announced that there are no plans to make a Drophead version of the latest Phantom VIII saloon, making this the last of a vanishing breed. Jim Butcher (American, B. 1944) "Children Sledding" Signed and dated lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. It is not certain why December 25 was chosen as the day to celebrate Christ's birth. Scholars hypothesize that early Christians chose the date to coincide with a pagan Roman holiday marking the "birthday of the unconquered sun," which was a festival celebrating the winter solstice. This event occurred annually between the fall harvest and the spring planting. Taking all this into consideration, in 350 A.D. Pope Julius I declared December 25 the official day of the Nativity. This meant that in many parts of the world Christmas would be celebrated in winter. Not surprisingly snow on the ground, especially fresh snow, became part of the magic of Christmas. In parts of Scandinavia, sleighs were the most efficient method of travel during the winter and gained a holiday appeal. Even Santa Claus is portrayed delivering Christmas cheer in a sleigh. In parts of the United States where the climate is temperate, artificial icicles and snow are manufactured on Christmas to incorporate that all-important aspect of the season. Traditionally on Christmas morning, children would wake to find sleds under the tree. After all their gifts were opened and Christmas dinner was consumed, they would bundle up from head to toe to test the new toy on the snow-covered hills. The excitement of sledding has been captured in this artwork. Image Size: 16.25 x 13.75 in. Overall Size: 24.5 x 22 in. Unframed. (B07725)

Shannon Stirnweis (American, B. 1931) "Milton S. Hershey" Signed lower center. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 32c Milton Hershey Great Americans Series stamp issued September 13, 1995. At age 15, Milton Snavely Hershey worked as an apprentice to a confectioner in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In 1876, after completing four years of training, the ambitious young man opened his own candy shop in Philadelphia. That venture eventually failed and Hershey returned to Lancaster. There he established the Lancaster Caramel Company, where he introduced the method of using fresh milk in the production of caramels. Having mastered that type of confectionery, Hershey sold his caramel company in 1900 for $1 million and embarked on perfecting a formula for the production of chocolate bars. Once again, milk was the magic ingredient that set his candy apart from others. In 1903, Hershey began building what would become -- despite his refusal to advertise -- the world's largest chocolate factory, on a site that is now fittingly known as Hershey, Pennsylvania. A noted philanthropist, Hershey founded the Milton Hershey School in 1909 to provide housing and education for orphaned boys. Today, the 12,000-acre campus surrounding the town of Hershey offers students college preparatory, business and vocational courses. In addition, the M.S. Hershey foundation -- supported by the bulk of the famed candymaker's fortune -- funds local public schools as well as Hershey Junior College. The man who once refused to advertise his products will forever be remembered as the creator of the "great American chocolate bar." Image Size: 21 x 18 in. Overall Size: 25.75 x 22 in. Unframed. Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "U.S.S. Wisconsin" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the U.S.S. Wisconsin. The U.S.S. Wisconsin was one of the most powerful fighting ships ever built. Commissioned on 16 April 1944 with Captain Earl E. Stone in command, U.S.S. Wisconsin saw her first active duty in the Pacific with Admiral William "Bull" Halsey's 3rd Fleet. She participated in the reconquest of the Philippines as part of Task Force 38. Her heavy guns helped neutralize the Japanese forces on Formosa, Luzon, and Nansei Shoto. As the Lingayen Gulf operations unfolded, U.S.S. Wisconsin provided invaluable shelling support and cover. Re-assigned to the 5th Fleet, U.S.S. Wisconsin became an integral part of Task Force 58 which headed for Tokyo. On 16 February 1945, the task force approached the Japanese coast under the cover of adverse weather. They achieved complete surprise, and shot down 322 enemy planes and destroyed 177 more on the ground. At War's end, she served as part of the "Magic Carpet" operation which brought American servicemen back to the states. During the Korean Conflict, U.S.S. Wisconsin sailed as flagship of the 7th Fleet. On 15 March 1952 she arrived off Songjin, Korea and concentrated her powerful 16-inch guns on an enemy troop train, destroying it. During the shelling she received her first-ever direct hit -- as if personally affronted her guns susbsequently blasted the enemy battery into oblivion. She received five Battle Stars for her service in World War II and one for her service in Korea. Image Size: 13.75 x 15.75 in. Overall Size: 20.5 x 21.75 in. Unframed. (B10856)

Michael Garland (American, B. 1952) "Christmas/Girl Dreaming of Santa Claus" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Dreaming of Santa stamp issued October 8, 1996. Christmas is the time of year when children are caught up in the magic of Santa Claus. They believe the miraculous story of a generous and jolly fat man in a red suit, who sports a white beard with a twinkle in his eye. If children listen closely, they can hear the faint jingle of Santa's sleigh bells as reindeer pull his sleigh across the skies, bringing wonderful gifts for good little boys and girls all over the world. The traditional myth of Santa Claus originated in the fourth century from Saint Nicholas, who served as bishop in the city of Myra in Asia Minor. Known for his generosity and love of children, he gradually assumed the legendary status of the giver of gifts during the Christmas season. After the Protestant Reformation, the traditional character of Saint Nicholas as the bearer of gifts was replaced by the Christ Child, called Christkindl in parts of Germany and Switzerland. Kris Kringle was derived from this name and was portrayed as an angel-like figure who brings gifts on Christmas. In England, Saint Nicholas appeared as a gentleman wearing a long coat and a beaver hat, and became known as Father Christmas. The American version of Santa Claus was developed when 19th century writers and illustrators portrayed Saint Nicholas as a chubby, jolly man with a sleigh of reindeer. These characters continue to bring joy to the hearts of children all over the world as they symbolize generosity and good will during the Christmas season. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 16.75 x 15 in. Unframed. (B15543)

A wonderful example of a carburetted, dry-sump, UK car that has been maintained well throughout its life.CEH 677T dates from March 1978 and has been enjoyed by its present owner since July 2011Considerable sums have been invested to restore the 308’s bodywork to its former gloryRepair panels to lower parts of door skins and door casings, lower parts of front wings between wheel arches and doors and the wheel archesAt 74,000 miles, a major engine and gearbox rebuild was carried out by Italia AutosportThis work included, new valves (all-steel valves replacing the original sodium-filled inlet valves), new valve guides and valve stem oil seals, valve seats re-cut, and the cylinder heads skimmedNew liners, pistons and rings, main bearings and big-end shells were fitted. New synchro-rings were fitted to all gears and all timing belts, clutch, HT-leads and various smaller items including fastenings and seals were all replacedNow showing 76,000 miles and good to go, it’s accompanied by its original toolkit and jack in their respective leather bags, the original Driver’s Handbook and the Service book which displays six service stamps from 1978 when the car was sold new until 1982This is a wonderful example of a carburetted, dry-sump, UK car that has been maintained well throughout its lifeOfficially introduced at the Paris Salon in October 1975, the 308 GTB’s styling was created by Pininfarina. The stunning two-seat coachwork was all new but incorporated some of the old magic by blending aspects of the Dino 206/246 with the later 365 GT4/BB. Styling cues from the Boxer were the dihedral groove at bumper level splitting top and bottom, the plunging nose and the sail panels reaching back to meet a shallower spoiler, whilst the conical side air intakes and recessed concave rear window were familiar from the Dino. The 308 GTB employed a tubular steel chassis with independent coil spring/wishbone suspension front and rear, complemented by anti-roll bars, adjustable dampers and powerful disc brakes. At its heart was a Formula One-derived, all-alloy, quad-camshaft, 3.0-litre V8 engine, allied to a transversely mounted five-speed gearbox.CEH 677T dates from March 1978 and has been enjoyed by just six owners, its present since July 2011. During our custodian’s ownership, considerable sums of money have been invested to restore the 308’s bodywork and bring it back to its former glory, including repair panels to lower parts of door skins and door casings, lower parts of front wings between wheel arches and doors and repairs to the wheel arches. All of this work carried out to a very high standard by Chris Gregory in Knaresborough and a full photographic record is in the car’s history file.Italia Autosport in Meltham were entrusted with the mechanical aspects of returning the Ferrari to top form and, at 74,000 miles, a major engine and gearbox rebuild was carried out by John Pogson’s team. This work included, new valves (all-steel valves replacing the original sodium-filled inlet valves), new valve guides and valve stem oil seals, valve seats re-cut, and the cylinder heads skimmed. No significant bore wear was found but the cylinder liners had belled out at their bases, therefore new liners, pistons and rings were fitted. None of the crankshaft journals was scored but new main bearing, and big-end shells were fitted in line with good engineering practice. New synchro-rings were fitted to all gears in the gearbox although none of them were worn out significantly. All timing belts, clutch, HT leads and various smaller items including fastenings and seals were all replaced at the time of the build as you would expect from such experienced engineers.Currently showing 76,000 miles, this lovely 308 is good to go. It’s accompanied by its original toolkit and jack in their respective leather bags, the original Driver’s Handbook and the Service book which displays 6 service stamps from 1978 when the car was sold new until 1982. All the invoices for service, repairs and MOTs from 1982 up to the present time are contained in a large lever-arch file.Genuine UK right-hand drive 308GTBs are becoming increasingly rare on today’s roads and after all the restoration work has been carried out, all a new owner has to do is jump in and enjoy the benefit of someone else’s efforts. This is a wonderful example of a carburetted, dry-sump, UK car that has been maintained well throughout its life.*Forming part of A Sale of Ferraris in association with Ferrari Owners' Club of Great Britain, the buyer of this lot will be entitled to one years free membership with Ferrari Owners Club of Great Britain* SpecificationMake: FERRARIModel: 308 GTBYear: 1978Chassis Number: 24823Registration Number: 24823Transmission: ManualEngine Number: F106A021Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 76500 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images

Lot 228

The ultimate modern-day Ferrari; rare, coveted and with just 1,600 miles. One of only 599 examples ever made and just two owners in totalNew to a Japanese collection, then bought by our vendor from UK-specialists DK Engineering in 2015Just 2,577km (1,601 miles); never seen rain, superb condition throughoutAll manuals and factory toolkit are still in their original plastic bagsHigh specification in Rosso Corsa (not Rosso Scuderia) paintwork, Grigio Silverstone Opaco roof, full Alcantara interior with Tessuto inserts, Rosso stitching, stitched prancing horses and Rosso harnessesUnderstandably, Ferrari uses the coolest ‘go-faster’ tag in the known-universe sparingly. History shows that only twice before has ‘The Scuderia’ attached the ultimate mark of speed and desirability to the rear of a road car. Those two cars were the 1962 250GTO and the 1984 288GTO - both were defined by performance and an intention to go racing. ‘Gran Turismo Omologato’ is the full description, and homologation was the purpose in both cases, albeit with vastly differing outcomes. The 250 enjoyed a great career, but the 288 GTO was born of the Group B regulations that never delivered the Porsche 959-versus-GTO-at-Le-Mans battles we all craved – leaving it as simply the fastest and most desirable Ferrari road car of its day.So how does this new car, launched in 2010, based on a road machine and with no specific intention to go racing, justify the name? Well, according to Ferrari, it does so by taking much of the technology from the track-only 599XX and making it available with a numberplate: it ‘homologates’ the XX for road use. The aims of this project were, in fact, very simple. Besides translating some of the new technologies wrought through the XX project into a road application, the intention was to extract maximum circuit performance from the 599 package, but still retain enough usability for the car to be a viable road car.The 599 is not an obvious base for a lightweight sports car. It may boast an aluminium bodyshell, but it’s a big machine with a 6.0-litre V12 wedged between the front wheels. The path to sharper responses has of course embraced the standard methodology: make it lighter and add more power but it’s the sheer number and scope of the changes that impresses, helping to justify its 2010 price tag of £299,300 and underpins Ferrari’s assertion that this is much closer to being a 599XX with numberplates than a 599 HGTE-Plus.For starters, engine power rises from 612bhp to a staggering 661bhp; internal friction has been reduced by 12% through all manner of tweaks: DLC (Diamond Like Coating) for the tappets, super-finished cam lobes, a new shape for the crankshaft weights and a new design of piston skirt. The compression ratio rose from 11.2 to 11.9 and the breathing was completely overhauled.Ferrari has crafted a new aluminium intake system that uses shorter runners and saves 2kg, the exhaust system is ‘hydroformed’ – effectively blown into shape, thereby avoiding the heavy seams that come with even the best welding. The process thins the metal from 1.5mm to 0.8mm and saves a remarkable 15kg over a standard system and throughout the car, an impressive 100kg has been shed.Gear ratios are down 6%, the car now hitting its claimed 208 mph maximum on the 8400rpm rev-limiter. If the engine work is comprehensive, the chassis goes even further: new springs, dampers, electronic systems, wheels, tyres and a new generation of carbon-ceramic brake that uses, for the first time in a road car, a ceramic pad material. At Fiorano the car is brutally fast, lapping a second faster than any other Ferrari, and that’s despite weighing 300kg more than a 430 Scuderia. The GTO’s list of go-faster aids is bewildering. It uses the now familiar F1-Trac system to harness those 661 horses, but it now has SCM2, which is a second-generation ‘Skyhook’ damper – the type with magnetized fluid that can alter viscosity through electric current. The main difference on the GTO is that it is fitted with three accelerometers from the XX that relay real-time data to SCM2, whereas the GTB’s dampers have to use approximate data. It’s very, very clever stuff. The latest F1 automated manual is superb, giving 60m/s shifts at Fiorano (that’s 40m/s faster than a GTB) yet able to slur the action in town. The noise? The outside world is treated to about four-fifths of the Le Mans soundtrack but, in its upper reaches, the V12 gets sharp, angry and altogether glorious. Performance is other-worldly, Ferrari claims it’ll do a standing km in 19.9sec, which makes it one of the fastest cars ever made in 2010.You could go on about this machine for an entire website - the thinner glass is 5.5kg lighter, forged wheels and titanium bolts save an eye-popping 22kg, and Sabelt’s snug carbon seats trim another 17kg. It’s a detail masterpiece, a track genius, a road tonic and yet another great Ferrari. Oh, and it fully deserves the badge. The car presented here is as close to a new 599 GTO as you are likely to find, a 2011 example with just over 1,600 miles covered and, in a condition, which wholly reflects this. The car has a very high specification with Rosso Corsa (not Rosso Scuderia) paintwork, Grigio Silverstone Opaco roof, full Alcantara interior with Tessuto inserts, Rosso stitching, stitched prancing horses and Rosso harnesses. It is supplied with all of its original and complete book-pack (its specification-specific Classiche document was retained by the original owner, but ordering a replacement from Ferrari is straightforward), covers, radio/key code cards and spare key.Being offered for sale from a discerning private collector of best-of-the-best classic and modern-classic cars, this GTO has been serviced / looked after by the famous 'Cornes' dealership of Japan, then DK Engineering and Dick Lovett Ferrari in the UK, and is undoubtedly one of the best examples available anywhere. Bought by our vendor in 2015 from DK Engineering who described it as 'an exceptional example', going on to say in an accompanying letter in the history file 'it is without doubt one of the best condition cars we have seen recently, especially in regards to the underside (of the car) which I looked closely at in the process of the service and PDI carried out in our workshops'. There is all the reassurance you could want about its ownership/servicing in Japan, its meticulous transportation to the UK (photos & paperwork etc.) and its subsequent full inspection with one of the UK's most revered Ferrari specialists. Regarded by many Ferrari enthusiasts as ‘ultimate modern-day Ferrari’, with that tangible GTO magic well and truly present, the associated kudos of knowing what that really is, and enough power and go to satisfy the demands of drivers seeking thrills from any one of the current crop of supercars, the 599 GTO might just be the high-tide mark for normally aspirated, big-engined sportscars full-stop.*Forming part of A Sale of Ferraris in association with Ferrari Owners' Club of Great Britain, the buyer of this lot will be entitled to one years free membership with Ferrari Owners Club of Great Britain* SpecificationMake: FERRARIModel: 599 GTOYear: 2011Chassis Number: ZFF70RDJ000179278Registration Number: RA11 HFJTransmission: Semi-autoEnClick here for more details and images

A ‘TENGU AND DRAGON’ BRONZE SPHERE, WAFTING ON A MONUMENTAL WAVEJapan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)This is an exceptional bronze ensemble, reminiscent of one of the most iconic images of modern art, the Great Wave of Kanagawa, created by Katsushika Hokusai in 1831. The ingenuity of this composition is quite unique, as it depicts an enormous wave about to crash down upon frail crabs and octopuses beneath, while the cresting foam on top wraps around a bronze sphere, neatly incised with a dragon holding the magic pearl, and a crow-beaked karasu tengu about to take off from its peak. The waves altogether form a frame through which we observe the ‘floating’ sphere. The inevitable breaking, that we seem to await, creates a ‘magic’ tension in this artwork. Please note this bronze can also be used as a censer.HEIGHT 51 cmWEIGHT 6.8 kgCondition: Very good condition with minor traces of use, old wear and superficial scratches, some casting flaws and pitting, minuscule dents and nicks here and there, minimal warping, some corrosion to underside of base, overall exactly as expected for a bronze of this size and age. Fine, naturally grown deep-brown patina overall. Provenance: From a private collection Paris, France. The ‘Kanagawa’ wave has been influential on generations of artists both in the East and the West. The energy it conveys echoes similar approaches to render the sublime of nature in 19th century European artistic movements. In summer of 1888, Van Gogh had written passionately to his brother that “These waves are claws, you can feel it. Ah well, if we made the color very correct or the drawing very correct, we wouldn’t create those emotions”. (Letter 676 to Theo van Gogh)The dragon is associated with a wealth of legend and symbolism in old Japan, signifying both the holy nature of Shinto and the wisdom of Buddhism. Representations of the dragon are found from the earliest historical period, wall paintings in the stone tomb chambers of the Kofun era (4th - 7th centuries) together with tiger, phoenix, and gryphon. In Shinto mythology, the deity Ryujin is a dragon who lives under the sea and bears a jewel that controls the tides. The tengu, or Heavenly Sentinel, is a legendary creature found in Japanese folk religion. Buddhism long held that they were disruptive demons and harbingers of war. Their image gradually softened, however, into one of protective, if still dangerous, spirits of the mountains and forests. Literature comparison: For a silver ornament of a dragon and crystal sphere see Joe Earle, Splendors of Meiji, Treasures of Imperial Japan, Masterpieces from the Khalili, pl. 135.

Ibrahim El Dessouki (Egypt, born 1969 )Portrait of the Artist Hend Adnan oil on canvas, framedsigned Ibrahim El Dessouki and dated '99' in Arabic, executed in 199950 x 35cm (19 11/16 x 13 3/4in).Footnotes:Provenance:Property from a private collection, AlexandriaNote:This work has been authenticated by the Artist himself'Art, be it poetry, visual art, drama or dance, is the transformation of what is real into magic, and converting what is magical into a tangible reality, for we perceive that there are, beyond those infantile voices, even more primordial voices. We artists guess the being of those most archaic voices; deeper, and more sagacious - spoken in a language of legend, yet we feel them as not mere legend, but simultaneously as dream and symbol'- Ibrahim El DessoukiBonhams is delighted to be presenting this powerful and enigmatic piece by Ibrahim El Dessouki depicting his wife, the Egyptian female artist Hend Adnan. El Dessouki's painting style is defined by his unique treatment of paint, accentuated by his ability to create subtle changes in its texture; his unusual use of negative space; and his deft manipulation of shadow and light. The artist's painting genres encompass portraiture, landscape and still life and captures his own unique and hypnotic perspective of the soul and essence of Egypt and its people. This painting is heavily influenced by ancient Egyptian paintings and sculptures and beautifully captures the sitters strong Egyptian features such as the prominent eyebrows, jet black hair and elegant resting hand and full lips. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
