John Shinnors (b.1950)Lighthouse, Man's Twin Cats and WashingOil on canvas, 149 x 151cm (58¾ x 59½")SignedProvenance: With Taylor Galleries, Dublin, label versoClearly aware that he is presenting viewers with something of a visual puzzle, John Shinnors’ title helpfully provides an inventory of what we might find in his painting. ‘Might’ because, even with his pointers helpfully to hand, you will be hard-pressed to identify the lighthouse, the cats and the washing.  And that is par for the course. In any particular picture, the artist delights in gathering some of the motifs that form part of his personal visual vocabulary, combining them in arresting and perplexing ways, and letting them loose. At first glance, most of his paintings appear abstract, and there is no question but that he enjoys the tension he creates between abstract arrangements of line, tone, colour and form, and the promise of a recognisable image. The motifs he uses are in a sense autobiographical because they are drawn from personal experience and, indeed, the everyday experience of most people. They include, as the painting’s title suggests, washing hanging on the line, cats and lighthouses - mostly the lighthouse at Loop Head in Co Clare at the mouth of the Shannon, a place of significant import for him. These and other habitual motifs, such as Friesian cattle, zebra crossings and magpies, lend themselves to his highly selective palette, dominated by varieties of black, white and multiple shades of grey. Colour plays a quiet though essential role in the tonal subtleties and, in dramatic displays or primaries and secondaries, plays a striking, not-so-subtle role, as here in the blanket of vivid green. Always, Shinnors captures a fleeting conjunction, as chance and movement reveal unexpected visual fireworks.Limerick’s best-known artist, he was born in 1950, studied at LSAD under the guidance of the remarkable Jack Donovan, and spent time travelling in England as a musician before returning home to commit himself to life as a painter. Early magic-realism gave way to his mature style which is, in its way, equally magical.Aidan Dunne, October 2022

-- "For a child, a building site is magic - I have been a lucky man" -- Piano, Renzo, italienischer Stararchitekt (geb. 1937). Eigenh. Schriftstück in grünem Filzschreiber m. U. 1 S. Fol. und eigenh. Entwurfszeichnung in schwarzer Tusche, mit gelber Kolorierung m. U. 1 S. Fol. (29,8 x 20,8 cm). Und: 2 Porträts in Originalfotografie. Silbergelatine-Abzug auf Barytpapier. 60 x 50 cm. 2011."As a child I always loved looking at construction sites with my father (a builder in the city of Genoa) and seeing things grow from nothing, created by the hand of man. For a child, a building site is magic: today you see a heap of sand and bricks, tomorrow a wall that stands on its own; at the end it has all become a tall, solid building where people can live. I have been a lucky man: I have spent my life doing what I dreamt as a child. Renzo Piano". Ingrid v. Kruse. 2/2 printed 2011", mit Copyright-Stempel.
