Roman Period, 30 BC-323 AD. A bronze amuletic figurine depicting an advancing sphinx on a base with head turned, wearing a feathered crown. 7.39 grams, 21mm (3/4"). Private collection, North London; acquired in the early 1980s. This is a very rare depiction of the goddess Isis; the goddess is usually shown either as a human figure, sometimes with wings which associate her with the kite, one of her sacred animals, or sometimes as a cow, or cow headed human, where she has taken over the roles and iconography of the goddess Hathor. In the Graeco-Roman period the goddess is sometimes shown as a human/animal hybrid, most commonly a snake with the head of the goddess, known as Thermouthis. The depiction of Isis with a lion's body could be associated with her role as Mistress of Magic and the lion could be the deity Tutu, a god of magic, sorcery and protection, here syncretized with the powerful goddess. Fine condition.
Ptolemaic Period, 305-30 BC. A bronze statuette of the goddess Isis seated with Horus on her lap; the goddess with the crown of Hathor with horns and sun-disc; flat to the underside. 46 grams, 48mm (2"). Property of a lady; acquired on the London art market before 1980. Naturalistic depictions of the goddess Isis nursing the infant Horus are rare at this period, though a few terracotta examples are known. Most images of Isis Lactans follow the traditional Egyptian form with the rigid frontal pose of the goddess wearing a large feathered crown. From the Late Period and to the Greco-Roman era, numerous statuettes were produced and disseminated far beyond the Nile Valley. Over time, the goddess Isis had become the most popular deity of the Egyptian pantheon and a complex mystery cult had developed based on salvation and belief in a life after death. Her role as a faithful wife to Osiris and devoted mother to Horus earned her an exceptional destiny in the Mediterranean world. Protector of women and children, she also developed other aspects such as Mistress of Magic, guardian of the dead, saviour, and as protector of sailors under the form of Isis Pharia. Her mystery cult spread throughout the Mediterranean world and shrines dedicated to the goddess, called Iseum, have been found from as far as Gaul, Britain, Germany and Spain. Representations of Isis suckling Horus inspired the representation of Virgin and Child, the most common theme in Christian art. The popularity of the cult of Isis bears testament to a vibrant and cosmopolitan culture where people from different regions of the Mediterranean world found spiritual satisfaction in venerating the same deity. Fine condition. Rare.
10th century AD. A flat-section silver plaque depicting a standing female in profile dressed in a long hatched robe, one hand raised touching a necklace of circular beads, long hair stylised in a 'knot' hairstyle, a semicircular loop to the reverse. Cf. Graham-Campbell, J. Viking Art, London, 2013, items 32-34; Arbman, H. Birka I: Die Gräber, Uppsala, 1940, plate 92, items 8 and 10; Swedish History Museum, items 108915-6. 2.31 grams, 23mm (1"). Property of a professional collector. Supplied with a positive X-Ray Fluorescence metal analysis certificate. These types of small pendant were found mostly in Sweden, and the majority of them depict richly dressed and adorned females. The position of the loop and their small size indicate that they were sewn on clothes and probably worn as personal amulets. They are usually called 'valkyries', because of the similar hairstyle and clothes of female 'cup-bearers' depicted on runestones, welcoming a fallen warrior or god Odin into Valhalla. Similar iconography can be seen on small golden sheets known as gullgubber. However, some researchers have pointed out that they may more likely represent a goddess of plenty or fertility. The most probable option is the goddess Freyja, who was known as the powerful mistress of magic, the patroness of love and fertility. The other indicator is her close connection to the valkyries, as in the poem Grimnismál where she is said to receive half of the fallen warriors and welcome them in her meadow Folkvang. A large necklace, which is a prominent feature on these figures, may represent her famous necklace Brísingamen, manufactured by dwarves, which was later stolen from her by Loki and retrieved by Heimdall. Very fine condition. Extremely rare.
Late Period, 664-332 BC. A pale blue glazed composition amuletic pendant group comprising: a standing goddess Isis wearing stepped throne crown; a standing goddess Nephthys wearing a headdress in the shape of a house and basket; both pierced for suspension. 5.86 grams total, 41-43mm (1 3/4"). Property of a London gentleman; formerly from an early 20th century collection. Isis and Nephthys were sisters and among the most important goddesses in the ancient Egyptian pantheon. Nephthys was particularly connected to the protection of the dead, while Isis was more a patron of motherhood, arts and magic. They both played an important role in one of the Egyptian myths about the death and resurrection of their brother Osiris, killed by their other sibling Seth. [2] Very fine condition.
