* ALAN DAVIE CBE RA HRSA RWA (SCOTTISH 1920 - 2014) MAGIC PICTURE NO. 1 limited edition lithograph on paper, signed and numbered 299/500framed and under glassimage size 55cm x 75cm, overall size 95cm x 85cm Note: Scottish painter, trained as a painter at Edinburgh College of Art from 1938 to 1940, initially favouring poetic imagery and coming into contact with modernism at exhibitions held in London of works by Picasso (1945; V&A) and Paul Klee (1945; Tate). He explored a diverse range of activities, however, before returning to painting from 1949 to 1953 he earned his living by making jewellery and in 1947 he worked as a jazz musician, an activity he continued in later life. He wrote poetry during the early 1940s. From 1953 to 1956 Davie taught in London at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, where he became interested in African and Pacific art. As early as 1958 Davie emphasised the importance in his work of intuition, as expressed in the form of enigmatic signs. During the 1960s, both in paintings and in coloured lithographs, he represented such images with increasing clarity at the expense of gestural handling. In 1971 he made his first visit to the island of St Lucia, where he began to spend half of each year and which brought Caribbean influences to bear on his suggestive imagery, as in Bird Gong No. 10, Opus 730 (1973; London, Brit. Council). Taking on the role of a disinherited shaman, Davie created a synthesis of mythologies from a variety of cultures for a modern civilisation devoid of its own village myths.

The vase 11.5cm high The William "Bill" Davies Collection of Scandinavian Glass. Bill Davies led a very successful career as an architect, primarily working in his native Wales, with his most celebrated project being the Plas Menai complex situated on the Menai Strait which serves as the National Watersports Centre for Wales and has been awarded Grade II and II* status - it was described as 'arguably the most admired and influential building completed in Wales in the last quarter of the twentieth century’ by Professor Richard Weston*. Bill was also commissioned for architectural work by Cardiff University and indeed served as a Lecturer in Design at the institution, playing a major part in developing the course into one of the highest rated in the United Kingdom.His major inspirations were the celebrated American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and the leading Finnish designer Alvar Aalto: from this stemmed Bill's enthusiasm for all aspects of mid-century design with the glass of Scandinavia becoming his particular passion, or rather, obsession. MICHELE DELLA VALLE: A PAIR OF RUBY AND DIAMOND PENDENT EARCLIPSEach designed as a cascade of baguette-cut diamonds ending with graduated circular-cut rubies, three rows to the front of the clip and two suspended from the back, mounted in 18K gold, with maker's mark for Michele della Valle, numbered, diamonds approximately 4.83cts total, rubies approximately 19.46cts total, with maker's pouch, length 6.7cmMichele della Valle was born in Rome and began designing costume jewellery at the age of 16. During a trip to Burma in 1976, della Valle bought his first stone, which he showed to revered stone dealer Roger Varenne, who suggested he take it to Hans Nadelhoffer, jewellery expert at Christie's. This proved to be a life-changing moment as it marks the beginning of della Valle’s career as a precious stone dealer and jewellery designer.In 1976 he worked for a year at Fürst Jewellers (a representative of Harry Winston) in Via Veneto, Rome and in 1978 opened his own workshop at Rome’s Piazza di Spagna. At this point, he began frequently travelling to Asia in search of precious stones and started collaborating with Bulgari on special orders, leading to his recognition as an important designer by famous Italian clientele of film stars and opera singers.Still a rarefied name in the world of jewellery, della Valle presents ideas and designs to clients by appointment only. The finished jewellery piece is then commissioned and meticulously handmade by sixteen highly skilled craftsmen in his atelier in Rome.Della Valle has become one of the most sought-after contemporary jewellers in the world. He developed a distinctive style, conjuring up lyrical compositions from a treasure trove of envious gemstones. This approach stems from his personal passion for opera and his own early training as a dramatic tenor. Nature remains his greatest inspiration, as he reinterprets classic jewellery iconography - soft, silky, light feathers and ethereal flowers. He dreams in colour, the vibrant grass greens, flaming orange and lilting blues of sea and sky are the colours of jewels for which he has become celebrated.Della Valle’s travels have an enormous influence on his creativity, stating: “I don’t understand how a jewel can be created without the magic of a trip to India or to the Far East in search of stones.
