‡ OGWYN DAVIES (1925-2015) rare original mixed media including collage, acrylic and heightening - entitled verso 'Soar y Mynydd', signed and dated 1992, 80 x 57cmsProvenance: purchased in the 1992 National Eisteddfod at Aberystwyth by the vendor, a smaller version was used to produce a series of famous printsAuctioneer's Note: an incredibly rare opportunity to acquire an original Soar-y-Mynydd image by Ogwyn Davies, one of the most iconic of images in modern Welsh art with its romantic depiction of one of the remotest chapel in Wales over typed with Welsh hymns and musical notes. This hauntingly beautiful print is a regular at our three times per year Welsh Sale. But never did we expect an appearance by an original. The chapel of Soar y Mynydd in Ceredigion would have been a familiar landmark to the artist Ogwyn Davies (1925 – 2015). He lived less than ten miles away from it, in Tregaron. Those ten miles are however profoundly lonely and isolated, and the chapel’s remoteness seems to us today as bizarre as it is miraculous and moving. This unique place of worship has a hold on the imagination. Its Welsh-language services, held during the summer months attract congregations from all over Wales and beyond, its location probably being more of a draw that its architecture. Like all Welsh Nonconformist chapels of the early nineteenth century, the interior is as plain as the face it presents. The only decoration are the words, “Duw cariad yw” (God is love), painted behind the pulpit. Ogwyn Davies was drawn to such texts: he loved to paint through the medium of Welsh. He created paintings and collages from the words of the national anthem (Hen Wlad fy Nhadau), and in 1997, spelt out an unequivocal “Yes” to devolution through tiny versions of the affirmative’s Welsh-language equivalent, “Ie”.In Soar y Mynydd, he turns again to Welsh (the language of heaven, as its speakers would insist), this time to explore and celebrate the dense relationship between place and culture and to synthesise word, image and sound. Collaged Biblical texts, hymns and their tunes add texture to the chapel’s plain façade, roll over the hills and ascend to the sky. The “Duw cariad yw” behind the pulpit, through centuries of association, gives rise to more phrases - familiar, ritualistic and defiantly monoglot – which cannot be contained within walls. These are the words which give meaning to the simple building, and which sanctify its remote location. Ogwyn Davies was not only familiar with Soar y Mynydd, but he also understood its significance and its appeal to the Welsh psyche – he may well have attended some of its services. In this painting he has certainly captured the magic of those Sunday afternoons in the summer, when the silent and bleak landscape around Soar y Mynydd reverberates to the sounds of sermons, songs and a shared history, which continues to inspire and unite us as a community and a nation.Comments: framed and glazed Free Delivery: bidders with invoices over £4000 in this Welsh Sale can benefit from free insured delivery to their home (England and Wales only). STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI (1983) - Screen-matched Death Star Turbolaser Tower Model Miniature - A screen-matched Death Star turbolaser tower model miniature from Richard Marquand's Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Much like its predecessor, the Death Star II's surface was lined with powerful gun turbolaser turrets, with this particular turret located near the Emperor's (Ian McDiarmid) Tower. The hand-painted brown details in the tower's darker panels, such as the vertical detail that forms the "]"-like shape, screen-match to the wide establishing shot of the towers lining the Death Star's surface before the scene where the Emperor gave the order to send the fleet to the far side of Endor. The Rebel fleet's assault on both Death Stars in the Battles of Yavin and Endor in A New Hope and Return of the Jedi, respectively, are considered two of the most visually-stunning sequences in the Star Wars franchise. The elaborate space battles were brought to life by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) through the use of expansive model miniatures representing the heavily armed surface and trenches of the Death Stars. The film earned a Special Achievement Award for Visual Effects at the 56th Academy Awards®.Crafted by ILM, this tower is made of cast resin painted matte grey with select panel sections given additional dark grey, brown, and white highlights. Lot 766

QUEEN - Freddie Mercury's Screen and Photo-matched "YEL 4" Live Aid and Tour-used Piano Monitor Rig Flight Case - A flight case marked "YEL 4", which was used for Freddie Mercury's piano monitor rig during Queen's Live Aid performance and various tours. On 13 July 1985, around 72,000 people gathered in Wembley Stadium to witness the benefit concert Live Aid. Queen's 18-minute set gripped the crowd from start to finish, with classic hits and Mercury's improvised acapella section, where the audience sang in unison along to "Ay-Oh". Live Aid is remembered as one of rock history's greatest live performances. There is also photographic evidence of this case on the Hot Space Tour and the Magic Tour, and its "Tokyo Japan" freight sticker suggests it was used on the Works Tour, too. It is rare for touring items associated with Mercury to come to market, making this a sought-after piece of music history. This case can be seen behind Mercury when he plays the piano at Live Aid during "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "We Are The Champions." The positioning of marks, paint wear, and stickers screen-match it to the footage, and the case can be seen on stage in photographs from the event. It can also be matched to photos from Queen's 1986 Magic Tour, and it is seen on stage in footage from their Wembley concert on 12 July 1986. The case was purchased directly from Queen in the late 1990s when they vacated one of their warehouses in Maida Vale, London. Different numbers and colours were assigned to each band member and were used alongside a stage plan so the technical crew could efficiently set up for each show. The case is made of plywood and metal, and its top and some of its sides are painted yellow, so the case could be immediately identified as Mercury's. It features plastic edging, four butterfly latches, handles at the sides, and wheels. The lid has "Yel 4" and "Queen" stencilled in black, a "Tokyo Japan" freight sticker and a worn pink sticker which appears to have "Queen 2" written on it. "Queen Productions Ltd" and the company's London address are stencilled in white on two sides, and one edge is labelled "Piano". The case has a foam interior lining, which shows notable signs of age. The lot displays general signs of scuffing and marks from use on tour. The yellow paint has chipped and worn away in places over time, and the metal exhibits corrosion due to its age. Dimensions: 87 cm x 70 cm x 72.5 cm (34.25" x 27.5" x 28.5")Estimate: £15,000 - 30,000 M Bidding for this lot will end on Friday, November 15th. Farideh Lashai (Iran, 1944-2013)Trees oil on canvassigned lower left in Farsi, executed circa 1996119.5 x 60cm (47 1/16 x 23 5/8in).Footnotes:Provenance:Property from the Varzi Family Collection, Spain'I became inflicted with the magic of orange trees and never overcame it. The trees took hold of me and never let me go, with thousands of hands, thousands of embraces' - Farideh LashaiGraceful, sophisticated and exhibiting a deep reverence for its subject matter, the present paintingss are perhaps the rarest and most significant works by Farideh Lashai to come to auction in recent yearsThe first is a still life painted in the early 1970's when Lashai had just returned to Iran after her studies in Austria, the work sees Lashai at her most naturalistic. Influenced by her contact with the new emergent artistic avant-garde of Iran, including figures like Sohrab Sepehri, Lashai's works from the Tree Series, of which this is the first to appear auction, are a rare glimpse of a painter at the bloom of her artistic maturity. The second, a depiction of trees from the 1980's sees the evolution of her signature expressionist aesthetic. In this phase, the artist moves away from realism, using bold, visible brushstrokes that shape the details of the composition. Movement and vibrant colours replace naturalistic representation, conveying the essence and emotional character of the trees. Here, form is suggested through dynamic lines and hues, emphasizing the artist's emotional response to the subject rather than its literal depiction.Farideh Lashai is remembered as one of the most talented and successful artists to have emerged from within Iran in recent decades. Meticulous, erudite and supremely perceptive, her work is characterized by a mastery of the painterly aesthetic, using the visual vocabulary of abstract and lyrical expressionism in depiction of ethereal natural landscapes, allegorical compositions, and colour fields.Above all, Lashai's enduring talent lied in her conceptual and aesthetic originality, and her ability to draw from established artistic traditions without being confined by their precepts. As an artist with abstraction as her genesis, she is nevertheless unafraid of the concrete, as a craftswoman fluent in the language of the brush, she felt comfortable experimenting with video art, installation and new media, it is this unrestricted, intrepid sense of creativity which is so palatable in much of her work.Lashai has stated that 'when you have doubt and uncertainty, you open the way for the expansion and development of an idea' and her forthright rejection of the objectivity of perception is manifest in much of her body of work, this sense of expressive subjectivity is gloriously exemplified in the present work, which counts as one of her most deftly executed, and technically accomplished paintings. Here, clearly defined, monolithic tree trunks provide a stark contrast to gestural, spontaneous surrounding fauna, punctuated by a vigorous flourish of cobalt that articulating the briskly defined flowers.Like the Expressionists and Emotivist painters that came before her, Lashai's compositions remind us the subjectivity of perception, rejecting a strictly ocular, representational approach to depicting nature and her visual surroundings, Lashai recognizes the transformative effect of perception on a given subject. For Lashai, reality, ultimately, is a fickle concept when its observation is not only channeled through but entirely dependent on our sensual faculties, senses which can embellish, obfuscate, enliven or depress their surroundings. The talent of the poet, artist, or musician lies in this very gap between reality and perception, in being able to give some form of physical or tangible representation to the way our thoughts and feelings colour the world we inhabit. It is this, which leads us to Gorky's proclamation that 'Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot physically see with his eyes. It is the emancipation of the mind', and it is precisely, this unseen aspect of our surroundings which Lashai so poetically captures.Technically, her fluency, awareness of textural and tonal aspects of paint, and effuse lyrical gestures demonstrate her expressionist approach to the subject matter of nature in striking form.Ultimately, In Lashai's oeuvre, and in the present work in particular, we encounter a vision of the natural world that is far from stale, academic and static, but one which is magnified by our poetic, metaphysical, and emotional responses to its grandeur. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
