Amulet or Prayer Roll against Disease and Demons.- Incipient nomine sancta Jhesu Christi, manuscript in Latin, on vellum, in a neat cursive hand, 86 lines, title in red, 11 2-line and 1-line initials in red and blue, cross signs in red, dark stain affecting 17 lines but still legible, slightly creased, small tears at tail not affecting text, E.P. Goldsmidt & Co. bookseller's description accompanying, 390 x 105mm., [France], [?late 14th or early 15th century]. *** An extremely rare Amulet, or Prayer Roll, worn wrapped around the arm as protection against the dangers of childbirth, maladies, sorcery and any other sorts of danger. This specimen begins "Incipient nomina sancta Jhesu Christi", followed by a string of names: "Messiahs"; "Sother";"Emmanuel"; "Saboath" etc. There follow eight further sections, some with headings specifying the disease against which help is sought ("contra fluxum sanguinis, Oratio Sci Sigismundi regis et martyris contra febresi...). The fourth section is to protect a woman in childbirth ("Si mulier laboret in partu", she is to put this "Breve" under right breast "et illico deo auxilliante liberabit se"). In describing the profound and immediate effect the movement had on him, the artist commented 'American Pop imagery was much more heraldic and flat than the British, which still tended to be illusionistic. New York City was the centre of the art world. I went to America, in the way I would have gone to Paris if I had been living in 1905 or 1910, determined to experience it first hand, not knowing whether I was going to kill myself artistically or not. One just had to leap in' (Allen Jones quoted in Andrew Lambirth, Allen Jones Works, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 2005, p.52). The imagery in Jones' work was quick to become more focused following this visit and his style harder-edged and more graphic. Jones met several of the leading American painters of the time, including Robert Motherwell and Helen Frankenthaler (on the introduction of Bryan Robertson), Mark Rothko, Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Wesselmann and Mel Ramos from whose first show in New York the artist bought a painting in 1964. Jones admired the 'virtuosity and lushness of paint' in Ramos's large oils and there are clear similarities between the two artists imagery. Upon his return to London in 1965, Jones began to push the boundaries of his work and created a group of radical leg paintings including First Step (1966) and Sheer Magic (1967) demonstrating his interest in both figuration and long held belief in using the erotic as means of communicating with the widest possible audience. The human figure was of the utmost importance to Jones and the exploration of the relationship between male and female. Jones began to specialise in the centrally placed figure as can be seen in Oh! La! La! (1970), where the acrobatic female performer is perfectly balanced against a varied colour field. She is clad in vivid colour herself with opposing shades on her high heels, legs and arms and is brimming with energy. The almost perfect symmetry of the composition is broken by the inclusion of another set of legs dressed in red on the right-hand side of the canvas, which gives a sense of audience to what have been described as 'stage' paintings. As the viewer, we also form part of the crowd and there is a sense of the artist inviting the painted figure to step out of the canvas and perform in reality. Oh! La! La! is accompanied by outstanding provenance from the collection of Dame Mary Quant, a true icon of fashion and designer of both the miniskirt and hotpants. She was at the forefront of the Swinging Sixties, revolutionising clothing through her designs and playing a central role in the cultural explosion of the period. Her significance was made clear by leading women's fashion writer Ernestine Carter who wrote, 'It is given to a fortunate few to be born at the right time, in the right place, with the right talents. In recent fashion there are three: Chanel, Dior, and Mary Quant'. ‡ OGWYN DAVIES (1925-2015) rare original mixed media including collage, acrylic and heightening - entitled verso 'Soar y Mynydd', signed and dated 1992, 80 x 57cmsProvenance: purchased in the 1992 National Eisteddfod at Aberystwyth by the vendor, a smaller version was used to produce a series of famous printsAuctioneer's Note: an incredibly rare opportunity to acquire an original Soar-y-Mynydd image by Ogwyn Davies, one of the most iconic of images in modern Welsh art with its romantic depiction of one of the remotest chapel in Wales over typed with Welsh hymns and musical notes. This hauntingly beautiful print is a regular at our three times per year Welsh Sale. But never did we expect an appearance by an original.The chapel of Soar y Mynydd in Ceredigion would have been a familiar landmark to the artist Ogwyn Davies (1925 – 2015). He lived less than ten miles away from it, in Tregaron. Those ten miles are however profoundly lonely and isolated, and the chapel’s remoteness seems to us today as bizarre as it is miraculous and moving.This unique place of worship has a hold on the imagination. Its Welsh-language services, held during the summer months attract congregations from all over Wales and beyond, its location probably being more of a draw that its architecture. Like all Welsh Nonconformist chapels of the early nineteenth century, the interior is as plain as the face it presents. The only decoration are the words, “Duw cariad yw” (God is love), painted behind the pulpit. Ogwyn Davies was drawn to such texts: he loved to paint through the medium of Welsh. He created paintings and collages from the words of the national anthem (Hen Wlad fy Nhadau), and in 1997, spelt out an unequivocal “Yes” to devolution through tiny versions of the affirmative’s Welsh-language equivalent, “Ie”.In Soar y Mynydd, he turns again to Welsh (the language of heaven, as its speakers would insist), this time to explore and celebrate the dense relationship between place and culture and to synthesise word, image and sound. Collaged Biblical texts, hymns and their tunes add texture to the chapel’s plain façade, roll over the hills and ascend to the sky. The “Duw cariad yw” behind the pulpit, through centuries of association, gives rise to more phrases - familiar, ritualistic and defiantly monoglot – which cannot be contained within walls. These are the words which give meaning to the simple building, and which sanctify its remote location. Ogwyn Davies was not only familiar with Soar y Mynydd, but he also understood its significance and its appeal to the Welsh psyche – he may well have attended some of its services. In this painting he has certainly captured the magic of those Sunday afternoons in the summer, when the silent and bleak landscape around Soar y Mynydd reverberates to the sounds of sermons, songs and a shared history, which continues to inspire and unite us as a community and a nation.Comments: framed and glazed Free Delivery: bidders with invoices over £4000 in this Welsh Sale can benefit from free insured delivery to their home (England and Wales only).
