Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Kittens and Puppy under Christmas Tree" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 13c Puppy and Kitten Christmas stamp issued November 3, 1982. At Christmas, man recaptures some of the lighthearted joy and faith of childhood . . . when it was easy to believe in Santa driving his reindeer across the skies . . . when it was even possible to hear (if one listened closely) the faint jingle of his sleigh bells in that endless night of waiting for Christmas Day to dawn. Christmas is the time when children reveal their most impossible desires. Little girls are not afraid to ask for playful little ponies, while little boys dream of a real spaceship that can fly to the moon. But, the real magic of Christmas is when morning finally comes, and the little girl is equally delighted to discover a cuddly little fur-ball kitten waiting to greet her, and the little boy is thrilled to find a puppy under the Christmas Tree . . . one he can call his very own. Image Size: 16.25 x 14 in. Overall Size: 24.25 x 22 in. Unframed. (B07758)

1978 Ferrari 308 GTB Transmission: manualMileage:51707Officially introduced at the Paris Salon in October 1975, the 308 GTB’s styling was created by Pininfarina. The stunning two-seat coachwork was all new but incorporated all of the old magic by blending aspects of the Dino 206/246 with the later 365 GT4/BB. Reminiscent of the Boxer was the dihedral groove at bumper level splitting top and bottom, the plunging nose and the sail panels reaching back to meet a shallower spoiler, while the conical side air intakes and recessed concave rear window were familiar from the Dino. The 308 was simply sublime in its appearance. The 308 GTB employed a tubular steel chassis with independent coil spring/wishbone suspension front and rear, complemented by anti-roll bars, adjustable dampers and powerful disc brakes. At its heart was a Formula One derived, all alloy, quad camshaft 3.0 litre V8 engine, allied to a transversely mounted five-speed gearbox. This example has been part of a significant collection since 2017 and is showing 51,707 on the odometer. Presented in Rosso Corsa coachwork over a tan leather interior, the Ferrari looks superb with its Pininfarina coachwork and comes complete with toolkit, UK registration document and previous MoT records.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

1963 MG B Roadster Transmission: manualMileage:98728Conceived in the late 1950s and launched in 1962, the MGB would turn out to be one of the most successful sports cars of all time. Attractively styled, cheap to run and easily maintained by the home mechanic, the 'B' carried on MG's traditional role of providing affordable, sports car motoring for the ordinary enthusiast. The MGB was mechanically similar to the preceding MGA, though with a heavier, unitary construction bodyshell. To compensate for the newcomer's increased weight the existing B-Series engine was stretched from 1,622 to 1,798cc, while the MGB's aerodynamically efficient lines made the most of the maximum available 95bhp to achieve a top speed which just bested the magic 'ton'. A 'right first time' design that changed little over the years apart from the adoption of a more robust five-main-bearing engine in 1965 (fitted from the start of GT production that autumn) a minor facelift for 1970 and the adoption of plastic bumpers (to comply with US legislation) for 1975, the 'B' enjoyed an 18 year production life and sales totalling in excess of 500,000 cars. Its popularity remaining undiminished today, the classic MGB is one of the easiest sports cars of its era to run and maintain in the 21st Century, being served by a worldwide industry of spare parts and service providers.Registered on 1st February 1963, this MGB was previously treated to an extensive restoration in 1990 and has more recently been sat unused in our vendors garage. Presented in white over a red leather interior, this MG is offered in need of further renovation work although we are told the engine turns and the body is solid. Presented with a soft top, tonneau cover, UK V5C registration document and offered to auction without reserve.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

* ALEXANDER GOUDIE RP RGI (SCOTTISH 1933 - 2004), TOLEDO oil on board, signed image size 29.5cm x 39.5cm, overall size 45cm x 55cm Framed. Provenance: We are grateful to Lachlan Goudie, artist, writer, broadcaster and the leading authority on the work of his father, for authenticating this painting and confirming that "Toledo" dates to 1957 "when Dad first went there (Toledo) and spent a prolonged period staying with friends and painting." Note: Alexander Goudie was born in 1933 at Paisley and, as a child, showed a prodigious talent for drawing. He studied at Glasgow School of Art when William Armour was head of drawing and painting and David Donaldson was the ubiquitous influence. Goudie, as a student at Glasgow, demonstrated his extraordinary ability. He received the Somerville Shanks Prize for Composition and, later, his draughtsmanship and sense of colour was recognized with the award of the Newbery Medal. As a young artist, he grew up admiring three great masters, Sir John Lavery, George Henry and James Guthrie; all artists who had bridged the gap between Glasgow and Paris. It was these artists’ glorious virtuoso control of oil paint that appealed to Goudie, as well as their genre and realist subject matter. Alexander Goudie was elected a member of the Glasgow Art Club in 1956 and a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1970. He painted a portrait of the Queen for the Caledonian Club, London (1992/93), and exhibited widely, showing at Harari and Johns, in London, the Fine Art Society, Glasgow, and the Musee de la Faience, in Quimper. Sir Timothy Clifford, former Director of the National Galleries of Scotland, said: ''At his best, Goudie could draw better than any of his rivals in Scotland. There was magic and vision in his art and, I expect, history will be kind to him.'' Collections: 79 of Goudie's paintings are held in UK public collections including at Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Hunterian, Rozelle House Galleries, Paisley Museum & Art Galleries and The Fleming Collection (London). Numerous prestigious corporate collections in the UK and France and in private collections around the world.

* ALEXANDER GOUDIE RP RGI (SCOTTISH 1933 - 2004), A NIGHT AT THE OPERA oil on canvas, signed image size 81cm x 86.5cm, overall size 92cm x 98cm Framed. Provenance: We are grateful to Lachlan Goudie, artist, writer, broadcaster and the leading authority on the work of his father for authenticating this painting and confirming "A Night at the Opera has been in the private collection of a long term collector of my father’s work, probably for around 40 years. The client was a keen opera fan and attended Covent Garden regularly. I believe it was a commission. The top hat was my grandfather’s. In my opinion, it's such a strong still life." The Stan West Collection1955 Bentley R-Type Continental Sports SaloonCoachwork by H J MullinerRegistration no. 412 HYLChassis no. BC59DEngine no. BCD26 (see text)*One of only 208 produced*Delivered new in the UK to the Hon. Lady Hogg*Fully restored by P&A Wood during 2005-2007*Part of the Stan West Collection since December 2009Footnotes:'The vocabulary of motoring being a lame and limited thing, it is difficult to put into words the gulf that separates a Continental from the average car in all the qualities that have a bearing on safety at speed. In acceleration, in braking, in cornering power, in roadholding, in responsiveness to the controls, this Bentley is the equal of modern racing cars, and superior to some.' – Raymond Mays, The Autocar, 2nd October 1953.Described by The Autocar as, 'A new stage in the evolution of the post-war Bentley,' the magnificent Continental sports saloon has been synonymous with effortless high speed cruising in the grand manner since its introduction in 1952 on the R-Type chassis. Of all-welded construction, the latter enabled the incorporation of a much-needed improvement to Rolls-Royce's standard bodywork in the shape of an enlarged boot together with associated changes to rear wings and suspension. The standard R-Type was a lively performer, achieving 106mph in silence and reaching 50mph from standstill in 10 seconds despite a kerb weight approaching two tons. The Continental raised this already superlative combination of high performance and exceptional refinement to hitherto unattained levels. Unlike the ordinary 'standard steel' R-Type, the Continental was bodied in the traditional manner and first appeared with what many enthusiasts consider to be the model's definitive style of coachwork - the lightweight, aluminium, wind tunnel-developed fastback of H J Mulliner. In developing the Continental, Bentley Motors made every effort to keep its weight to the minimum, knowing that this was the most effective way to achieve the maximum possible performance. Rolls-Royce's six-cylinder, inlet-over-exhaust engine had been enlarged from 4,257cc to 4,556cc in 1951, and as installed in the Continental benefited from an increase in compression ratio - the maximum power output, of course, remained unquoted but has been estimated at around 153bhp. As the Continental matured, there was – inevitably – an increase in weight, which was offset by the introduction of a 4,887cc engine on the 'D' and 'E' series cars, commencing in May 1954. The Continental's performance figures would have been considered excellent for an out-and-out sports car, but for a full four/five seater saloon they were exceptional: a top speed of 120mph, 100mph achievable in third gear, 50mph reached in a little over 9 seconds, and effortless cruising at the 'ton'. Built for export only at first, the Continental was, once delivery charges and local taxes had been paid, almost certainly the most expensive car in the world as well as the fastest capable of carrying four adults and their luggage. 'The Bentley is a modern magic carpet which annihilates great distances and delivers the occupants well-nigh as fresh as when they started,' concluded Autocar. Chassis number 'BC59D' was completed in March 1955 and first owned by the Hon. Lady Hogg. The car's original registration was 'PYL 699' and it left the factory fitted with engine number 'BCD58'. (The engine currently fitted, 'BCD26', was originally in a slightly earlier D-series Continental, 'BC27D'.) Known subsequent owners are Glanmore Investments (1959); Aire Wool Ltd (1965); A S Baird (1966); William Gilbertson-Hart (1994); Michael Lee (Australia, 2001) and Rudolph Hahnenberger (2003). Frank Dale & Stepsons added air conditioning at Mr Lee's request. From the contents of the history file we can see that the Continental was fully restored by renowned marque specialists P&A Wood during 2005-2007 for previous owner Rudolph Hahnenberger of Uppsala, Sweden and Harley Street, London, who had registered the car in 2003. There are numerous P&A Wood bills on file testifying to the extent of the rebuild and to Mr Hahnenberger's no-expense-spared approach to the project (inspection highly recommended). Stan West acquired the Continental for his collection in December 2009 and the car has continued to be maintained by P&A Wood. Related invoices are on file and the Bentley also comes with a quantity of expired MoTs and a V5C Registration Certificate. Presented in beautiful condition, 'BC59D' represents a rare opportunity to acquire a fine example of the most famous post-war Bentley benefiting from full restoration by the best in the business. With its outstanding aerodynamic coachwork, developed by Rolls-Royce stylist John Blatchley in collaboration with coachbuilder H J Mulliner, the R-Type Continental fastback remains the pinnacle of Bentley's achievements in the post-war era.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
