The firm of Heath and Company was founded in 1845 by George Heath in Erith, Kent. He specialised in supplying instruments to the maritime trade as was succeeded by his sons Frederick Thomas and George William on his death in 1872. By 1900 the firm had expanded to become one of the most prolific manufacturers of nautical and surveying instruments and had adopted the `Hezzanith` trade name; in 1926 the business was amalgamated with W.F. Stanley of London. The optician John Lizars (1810-1879) set-up business as an optical instrument maker in Glasgow in 1830. After his death his successors continued making eyeglasses, telescopes, microscopes, barometers, thermometers, magic lanterns and slides, cameras, stereo cameras and viewers and binoculars. By 1913 had branches in Edinburgh, Paisley, Greenock, Aberdeen, Liverpool and Belfast, latterly the company merged with C. Jeffrey Black to form the Black and Lizars chain of optical retailers.
2nd-3rd century A.D. A bifacial oval-shaped carnelian gemstone with bevelled edge, the obverse engraved with a scene composed of multiple figures standing on a ground line, crescent moon between two stars above, from left possibly the god Helios or Serapis being crowned by Victory, the central standing figure of Isis holding a cornucopia, fronted by an eagle holding a wreath in its beak, crowned by another winged Victory; partial inscription below; reverse bearing five lines of later inscribed text, in Greek and Latin letters. Cf. Campbell, B., 'A Miscellany of Engraved Stones' in Hesperia, 1954, volume 23, pp.138-157, fig.31. 2.11 grams, 20 mm (3/4 in.). Acquired 1970-1999. Property of a late London Mayfair gentleman, by descent. Egyptian deities are often represented on magical gems: in particular Isis, Osiris, Sarapis, Horus-Harpokrates and Anubis but also Thoth, cynocephali, leontocephali, other figures with animal heads, scarabs and, less often, Seth, Apis or other gods. On the other hand, many gems with typical Graeco-Roman deities are represented without having a connection to magic; they were applied to magical use by being inscribed with magical words or formulae.
Circa 4th-8th century A.D. A conical ceramic bowl bearing a series of painted Aramaic incantations arranged in circumferential bands to the internal wall, incorporating a trapezoidal panel containing a demon figure. 275 grams, 15 cm wide (5 7/8 in.). Acquired before 1988. From an important deceased gentleman’s collection by descent. Aramaic incantation bowls are particular to the Sassanian period and have been found in regions of modern Iraq. These simple ceramic bowls, also known as magic bowls, each contain an Aramaic inscription, written in ink, which spirals from the centre. The bowls seem to have played an important part in domestic life. For example, during excavations in Nippur in 1889, one or more incantation bowls were found in each house together with domestic artefacts, most often in doorways or under floorboards in the corner of rooms. The bowls are predominantly apotropaic, and the inscriptions tend to protect their owners from misfortunes such as those faced in child-birth, illness and evil spirits.
9th-10th century A.D. A gilt silver pendant of discoid form with integral suspension loop, displaying the god Odin in the centre, gripping a raven in each hand, pseudo-corded border. Cf. Hammond B., British Artefacts Volume 2 - Middle Saxon and Viking, Witham, 2010, p.57, item 1.5.3-f; cf. Korshyn, V.E., Yazcheskye Priveski Drevnei Rysi X-XIV Vekov, Moscow, 2013, item M.2.02. 1.5 grams, 22 mm (7/8 in.). UK gallery, acquired in the 2000s. Property of an English gentleman. Odin, also known as Woden in Old Saxon, the chief god of Eddic mythology and the most versatile of the gods. He is the father of the gods, the god of poetry, the god of the dead, of war, magic, runes and ecstasy. The numerous names for Odin in Old Norse literature exemplify his diversity. According to Snorri Sturluson in the Gylfaginning Odin is one of the first of the gods to be created. Odin is called the All Father because he is the father of all the gods. He lives in Asgard from where he can look over the whole world and is considered to be omniscient, and because of this he is known as 'the extremely wise one.' Odin's attributes are his spear, Gungnir, a ring known as Draupnir, his blindness in one eye and his hat and cloak, all of which form his stereotypical image. Odin's two ravens, Huginn and Muninn, meaning Thought and Memory, are likewise firmly established attributes from the end of the Migration Age onwards, as illustrated in bracteates, pendants and picture stones. The two ravens fly over the whole world and return at breakfast bringing Odin news of many things, and through this he is known as Hrafnagud, or the raven god. [No Reserve]
