* Costa (Michael, 1808-1884). Ebony baton with presentation inscription in Italian, which translated reads: ‘This that will make time flow faster or slower, will become a magic wand in your hands’, blue cotton tassel, 42cm long (16.5ins) This was the last baton used by Sir Michael Costa, who gave his last concert in 1883 As director and conductor of the Royal Italian Opera at the King’s Theatre from 1831 to 1866, and at Covent Garden from 1846 to 1868, Costa gave the first performances of most of the great Italian and French operas of the period, including those of Verdi and Rossini. His introduction of the baton for conducting imposed a greater authority and discipline than formerly demanded, and his skillful technique gained him the reputation as leading opera maestro of the world of his day. Together with a colour photograph from the occasion of the unveiling of a plaque to Sir Michael Costa at his home at 59 Eccleston Square, Pimlico, London. Shown in the photograph is Antonio Pappano holding the baton as loaned by Anthony and Sussan Gasson for the occasion. -2
