Original vintage advertising poster promoting a DKW Auto Union brand of motorcycles. Original vintage advertising poster promoting a DKW Auto Union brand of motorcycles. The poster hails their victory in four different classes of the 1936 German Championships. Great dynamic image. Deutsche Meister auf DKW. DKW Auto Union brand of motorcycles. Auto Union AG, Chemnitz, was an amalgamation of four German automobile manufacturers, founded in 1932 and established in 1936 in Chemnitz, Saxony. It is the immediate predecessor of Audi as it is known today. As well as acting as an umbrella firm for its four constituent brands (Audi, Horch, DKW, Wanderer), Auto Union is widely known for its racing team (Auto Union Rennabteilung, based at Horch works in Zwickau/Saxony). The Silver Arrows of the two German teams (Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union) dominated not only GP car racing from 1934 onwards but set records that would take decades to beat, such as the fastest speed ever attained on a public road (at 432.7 km/h (268.9 mph), unbroken as of 2013). After being reduced to near ruin in the aftermath of World War II, Auto Union was re-founded in Ingolstadt, Bavaria in 1949, ultimately evolving into the modern day Audi company following its takeover by Volkswagen in 1964 and later merger with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969. The current corporate entity which bears the Auto Union name – Auto Union GmbH – was founded in 1985 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Audi AG; its purpose is to act as owner of Auto Union's historical trademarks and intellectual property, as well as managing Audi's heritage operations. The company's distinctive logo, of four interlocking rings to represent the original four members of the Auto Union, survives as the logo of Audi. Original vintage travel poster published by the Santa Fe Railway to promote travel to the west with a rich colour photograph showing the San Francisco bridge at dusk. The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, known locally as the Bay Bridge, is a complex of bridges spanning San Francisco Bay in California. As part of Interstate 80 and the direct road between San Francisco and Oakland, it carries about 260,000 vehicles a day on its two decks. It has one of the longest spans in the United States. The toll bridge was conceived as early as the gold rush days, but construction did not begin until 1933. Designed by Charles H. Purcell, and built by American Bridge Company, it opened on November 12, 1936, six months before the Golden Gate Bridge. It originally carried automobile traffic on its upper deck, and trucks and commuter trains on the lower, but after the Key System abandoned rail service, the lower deck was converted to all-road traffic as well. In 1986 the bridge was unofficially dedicated to James Rolph. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (reporting mark ATSF), often referred to as the Santa Fe or AT&SF, was one of the larger railroads in the United States. Chartered in February 1859, the railroad reached the Kansas-Colorado border in 1873 and Pueblo, Colorado, in 1876. To create a demand for its services, the railroad set up real estate offices and sold farm land from the land grants that it was awarded by Congress. Despite the name, its main line never served Santa Fe, New Mexico, as the terrain was too difficult; the town ultimately was reached by a branch line from Lamy. The Santa Fe was a pioneer in intermodal freight transport, an enterprise that (at one time or another) included a tugboat fleet and an airline (the short-lived Santa Fe Skyway). Its bus line extended passenger transportation to areas not accessible by rail, and ferryboats on the San Francisco Bay allowed travelers to complete their westward journeys to the Pacific Ocean. The AT&SF was the subject of a popular song, Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer's "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe", written for the film, The Harvey Girls (1946). The railroad officially ceased operations on December 31, 1996, when it merged with the Burlington Northern Railroad to form the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway. Good condition, creases in top right margin. Country: USA, year of printing: 1940s, designer: Unknown, size (cm): 61x45.5
Original vintage advertising flyer for Minerva la Voiture de l'elite / Minerva the car of the elite - Jean Bernard massard grand vin champagnisé / Jean Bernard massard great sparkling champagne style wine - Hotel de Suede and Hotel d'Harscamp. The Minerva was a prominent Belgian luxury automobile manufactured from 1902 until 1938. The company became defunct in 1956. During World War I Sylvain de Jong and his engineers were based in Amsterdam where they maintained development of their automobiles. Minerva cars were used for hit and run attacks against the Germans initially with rifle fire and light machine guns from simply protected open topped vehicles. These vehicles became increasingly sophisticated until trench warfare robbed them of the mobility needed for their hit and run tactics. In 1920, they returned to Belgium to restart the production of luxury cars with the 20CV 3.6-litre four-cylinder and 30CV 5.3-litre six-cylinder models. The manufacturer's star rose not only in Europe, but in the United States as well where American film stars, politicians and industrialists appreciated the cars. The Minerva had the same quality as the Rolls-Royce, but was slightly less expensive. In 1923, smaller models were introduced; the 2-litre four-cylinder 15CV and 3.4-litre six-cylinder 20CV with standard four-wheel brakes. In 1927, the 30CV was replaced with the 6-litre AK and also a new 2-litre six, the 12-14, was introduced. Large cars continued to be a specialty of Minerva's, and in 1930 the then almost-compulsory-for-the-time straight eight was introduced in two sizes; the 6.6-litre AL and the 4-litre AP. The last Minerva was the 2-litre M4 of 1934 but it did not sell well. With the financial crisis in the 1930s, the company was restructured as Société Nouvelle Minerva but in 1934 merged with the other major Belgian manufacturer Imperia. Imperia continued to make Minervas for a year and the AP until 1938 and from 1937 badged some of their cars and trucks for export to England and France as Minerva-Imperias. Just before the outbreak of the war, a group of businessmen from Verviers bought out Minerva. Very good condition, light staining. Country: Belgium, year of printing: 1930s, designer: Meulemans, size (cm): 23x15
Cartier - A gentleman's stainless steel 'Roadster' chronograph wristwatch, the signed tonneau shaped black dial with luminous Roman numerals and hands, centre sweep chronograph counter, three subsidiary registers and date window at 3 o'clock, the thirty seven jewel mechanical automatic ETA movement calibre 2894 - 2 , V8DJ4, movement 8510, with quickset date, case number 910595MX, diameter 43mm, to a signed steel bracelet with deployant clasp One of the most iconic men's watches from the Maison, the Roadster made its debut in 2001 and is Cartier's elegant take on the world of cars. As its name suggests, its design is heavily influenced by the sports cars of the 1950s and 1960s. An unusual feature is the lens above the date window. Its unique shape recalls a curved car windshield. Carrying on the automobile inspiration is the winding crown. Some say the crown mimics the look of a car radiator while others claim it's a tribute to wheels. The dials of the early models were clearly influenced by the speedometer of the Porsche 356 Speedster. Cartier later changed the dials to be more in line with their other watches, including a return to the use of their signature Roman numerals as in this example. Although the Roadster is no longer in production, given its bold design and instantly recognisable silhouette they are still an extremely sought after and classic timepiece.
