1974 Mercedes-Benz 230 Limousine Transmission: automaticMileage:63000The name Limousine or Limo, as they are popularly known, originated from the Limousin region in central France from a type of hood worn by the population that resembled the covering for a carriage. Later, it was known as the cover for the driver on an automobile, while today, it is known as a luxury vehicle that has a longer frame and wheelbase to accommodate more space behind the driver, at times more than is needed. There are also models that are stretched to accommodate further passengers and include a further seating arrangement behind the driver. These seats face forward and may be folded in the down (and out of the way) position. In general limousines have either six or eight seats - the Mercedes-Benz 230 being one of these. The W114/W115 models were the first post-war Mercedes-Benz production car to use a newly engineered chassis, not derived from preceding models. The new chassis format of semi-trailing rear arms and balljoint front end would be used in all new Mercedes passenger car models until the development of the multi-link rear suspensions of the 1980’s.Originally registered on 1st May 1974, this W114 Limousine is finished in white with tan leather interior. The bodywork is in reasonable order, the interior, finished in tan leather, is particularly smart but for a tear in the driver’s seat. The middle (jump) seat folds away easily to leave enormous legroom for the rear passengers. Owned as part of a private collection, the car has been continually maintained and dry stored when not in use and subject to a recent engine rebuild with the power is delivered by the 2292cc six-cylinder petrol engine. This 230 Limousine is offered for sale with a V5C registration document and we think given recent W114 limousine prices achieved by Historics, very good value indeed.Guide £6,000 - £11,000 Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. 1963 Facel Vega II Transmission: manualMileage:49988Built by one of France’s most famous manufacturers of high-speed grand tourers, the Facel II continued the marque’s tradition of American performance coupled with French styling. Powered by a 355bhp, Chrysler V8, the four-seater Facel II could sprint from 0-60mph in 7.8 seconds and achieve a top speed of 134mph while carrying its passengers in total luxury. This intoxicating experience made the Facel II one of the most desirable cars of early 1960s society. Approximately 180 of the Vega II were manufactured between 1962 and 1964. In its relatively short life, the French firm of Facel produced around 2,900 cars, all of which were stylish, luxurious and fast. Hand-built, they were, of course, necessarily very expensive, the Vega II was priced in Rolls-Royce territory and were bought by the rich and famous seeking something exclusive and distinctive. Founded by Jean Daninos in 1939, Forges et Ateliers de Construction d'Eure-et-Loir (FACEL) specialised in the construction of aircraft components and metal furniture. After the war, the company engaged in the supply of car bodies to Panhard, Simca and Ford France before branching out into automobile manufacture in its own right with the launch of the Vega at the 1954 Paris Motor Show. Government legislation had effectively killed off France's few surviving luxury car manufacturers after the Second World War but that did not deter Jean Daninos in his bold attempt to revive what had once been a great French motoring tradition. A luxurious grande routière, the Vega featured supremely elegant coupé bodywork welded to a tubular-steel chassis. The roll call of esteemed owners includes royalty, politicians, diplomats and entertainers such as: Tony Curtis, Danny Kaye, Joan Fontaine, Ava Gardner and Ringo Starr as well as great motor racing figures such as Sir Stirling Moss, Maurice Trintignant and Rob Walker.Originally registered on 16th April 1963, this car was on the Facel stand for the London Motor Show and an interesting, yet slightly chequered history, accompanies this Vega. We do know this vehicle was for sale in Roy Salvadori’s showroom on the A3 and appears to have been sold and financed by Southern Organs who were part of a relatively large Hire Purchase scam. In 1972, the car was owned by a Jon Wilson who was detained in H.M. Prison in Cardiff. A letter in the file, written by Mr. Wilson authorises a Mr. Angelo Papacosta to sell the car on his behalf. Little is known of the cars whereabouts after then, however we are aware the car spent some 25 years in a barn where she was recovered from in 2017.This Facel Vega II is one of only 26 right hand drive examples manufactured. In need of total restoration in 2017 it has spent the last two years undergoing a painstaking restoration with 125 hours spent on the paintwork alone, culminating in the stunning example presented today. It has a 383ci Chrysler engine mated to a TorqueFlite automatic transmission and is finished in, what is thought to be, its original factory colour of grey with red leather trim. Fitted with power steering and rare chromed disc wheels, the interior of this handsome Facel is an area of beauty, the magnificent dashboard is akin to a piece of furniture. Supplied with a UK V5C registration certificate and early duplicate buff logbook coupled to a bill of sale from A. Papacosta and accompanying correspondence in October 1972 and an MoT test certificate from the following year. Also present are copies of the UK Facel sales data, an article written about the car and its owners in 2015 by the Facel Vega Car Club and cuttings from tales of the infamous previous ownership which is a thoroughly interesting read and much of the provenance for this fabulous motorcar. These are very stylish cars and are relatively simple mechanically, Jean Daninos was once quoted as saying The HK500 was the most interesting car we ever made but the Facel II was the best. It was totally elegant. This Facel Vega II offers excellent value given the rarity and to this day is seen as one of the most iconic pieces of automotive design.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. 1922 Studebaker Light Six Tourer Transmission: manualMileage:Established as a buggy company before the Civil War, Studebaker entered the automotive business in 1904, building bodies for chassis supplied by Garford of Elyria, Ohio. By 1913, the company was building its own cars, beginning a tradition of well-built automobiles from South Bend, Indiana, that would continue for the next 51 years. By the time Studebaker moved to Canada in 1964, it was the country’s oldest automobile manufacturer and among the longest surviving car manufactures in the world. The Light Six was in production for seven years, with modern bodywork and styling making this a highly desirable vehicle to own. More than 200,000 were manufactured by Studebaker. This interesting Studebaker was stripped down to the bare chassis by a father and son. It was then fully rebuilt to a very good standard using either new or remanufactured parts. At the same time, a Morris Minor 1000 A-series engine was fitted together with an alternator. This modification means this Studebaker is very reliable and fun to drive. She has been wrapped in blue as the car was required for some film work; underneath the wrapping the colour is white. The blue wrap can easily be removed and the car could be a great edition to a wedding car company, particularly in view of the engine modification. This great looking American classic is UK registered, tax exempt and ready to enjoy immediately.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. 1974 Citroën DS 23 Safari Transmission: automaticMileage:55000After 18 years of secret development, the DS19 was introduced on 5th October 1955 at the Paris Motor Show. In the first 15 minutes of the show, 743 orders were taken and orders for the first day totalled 12,000 cars. To a France still deep in reconstruction after the devastation of World War II, the DS was a symbol of French ingenuity. It was the first mass-production car with front power disc brakes. It also featured hydro pneumatic suspension including an automatic self-levelling system, variable ground clearance, power-steering, a semi-automatic transmission and a fibreglass roof which reduced weight. It also sported inboard front brakes as well as independent suspension. Despite the rather leisurely acceleration afforded by its four-cylinder engine, the DS was successful in motorsports like rallying, where sustained speeds on poor surfaces are paramount. It won the Monte-Carlo Rally in 1959 and, controversially in 1966, after the disqualification of the BMC Mini-Cooper team. The Citroën DS placed fifth on Automobile Magazine's '100 Coolest Cars' listing in 2005. It was also named the most beautiful car of all time by Classic & Sports Car magazine after a poll of 20 world-renowned car designers.Originally registered on 19th August 1974, this right hand drive Citroën presents in splendid condition. The 2347cc engine runs well, this mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. These larger engine DS’s are delightful to drive offering a good performance and a ride that is difficult to surpass. The Safari offers a significant load space as well as being very stylish. Supplied with a V5C registration document, these Citroëns are an automotive masterpiece, offering beauty, functionality, and practicality all in one. Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. An award-winning example of a motoring icon.An early AZL model constructed in the Paris Levallois factoryOne of the very last with a full-length hood with a fascinating historyMultiple show winner including Best in Class at Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018; awarded a solid silver dish by CartierFeatured on Car SOS, YouTube and in a recent book of the 2CVIf not an absolute Best-of-Breed example, it’s about as close as you will findThe Citroën 2CV is unquestionably one of the most important European cars of all time. It helped put the French working class on wheels, especially important after the ravages of WWII and offered basic transportation, a boon to the French economy both from a transportation and a manufacturing standpoint. There are a number of ‘urban myths’ concerning head of Citroën, Pierre-Jules Boulanger’s 1930’s vision for the future but, essentially, his car had to be able to “ transport four peasants with 100kg of farm produce to market at 37mph, in clogs, and across muddy unpaved roads if necessary. The roof had to be high enough, enabling driver and passengers to ride whilst wearing their Sunday hats to church, the car’s fuel consumption would average 90-95mpg, it should be able to drive across a ploughed field without breaking the eggs it was carrying and, above all, it had to stay within the two horsepower fiscal bracket to remain affordable.” Disparagingly dubbed ‘Tin Snail’ in the US and fondly known as La Deuche in France, the 2CV is one of the country’s most recognisable icons. The example offered here, chassis #333499, is one of 107,250 built for the 1957 model year. All 2CVs at that time had the basic 425cc motor (an increased capacity from the original 375cc) giving 12.5bhp and a top speed of 50 mph, and were supplied in Grey.1957 was an important year for 2CV construction as that model year’s offerings showcased the first major design changes to the model. These changes included larger mirrors, a larger rear window and, for the first time, a heating and ventilation system. Chassis #333499 denotes this particular car is an early AZ model constructed in the Paris Levallois factory between September 1956 and August 1957. #333499 is actually an example of the desirable ‘AZL’ specification car, (the L in AZL signifies this is a luxury model) featuring additional detailing from the factory, including the strip of polished aluminium which runs down the bonnet (commonly called the 'bagette') and superior seat cover material, making this example stand out from all other 2CV models.According to the car's history file, it was imported into the UK in September 1970, and wore the registration 'ELM 166J' for the next 43 years; it was subsequently bought in 1983 (being sold with a house!) by a very enthusiastic 2CV advocate, a Mr James Gibson of Nottingham, who restored the car and used it regularly. According to his notes, this car is one of the oldest known survivors of its type in the UK. The car went on to have a far later restoration, including a new galvanised chassis (but retaining its original suspension and axles), and has been superbly renewed in the classic colour scheme of Gris Clair (grey) with a royal blue roll-top and seats. This car is a multiple show winner including ‘Best in Class’ at Goodwood (Festival of Speed) 2018 and was awarded a solid silver dish by Cartier. It has also appeared on the television show ‘Car SOS’, can be seen on YouTube and featured in a recent book of the 2CV.Since completion, it has been used sparingly during the summer months only, with recently fitted new Michelin 125/400 tyres. Fully serviced and with 123 Electro Ignition for extra reliability, this 2CV drives as well as it presents. The car is accompanied by a decent history file, including many invoices, period photos of Mr Gibson driving it, photos of the restoration and a 2CV GB Club letter authenticating its model type and condition. The Deux Chevaux is a firm favourite of owners of two similarly early examples, motoring journalists Chris Harris and Andrew Frankel, who are both smitten with the charms of these very special cars.A superb example of a highly significant French automobile, this 2CV is fully ready to be appreciated and maybe, when the current crises is over, it would be a perfect way to really enjoy the countryside that we have all been missing over recent months.SpecificationMake: CITROËNModel: 2CV AZLYear: 1957Chassis Number: 333499Transmission: ManualEngine Number: 2118440Drive Side: Left-hand DriveMake: LHDInterior Colour: BlueClick here for more details and images
A competitive pre-’65 FIA Ford Falcon race car with celebrity provenance.Eligible for Masters, HSCC, HRDC and all pre-’65 FIA Series in EuropeProfessionally built and maintainedUnique celebrity provenanceRoad registered and eligible for Tours and RalliesCompetitive Steve Warrior engine Spares include a set of wheels/tyres, a limited-slip differential and body mouldsValue today in this price rangeFIA/HTP papers have been applied for, subject only to inspection post CovidPre-1965 Touring Cars built to FIA-Homologated regulations is a popular format for classic saloon car racing adopted by Masters, the HRDC, the HSCC and other well known classic car racing series. We have confirmation that this vehicle would also be eligible for the Motor Racing Legends Royal Automobile Club Pall Mall Cup.The big V8 class cars mixing with the Lotus Cortinas and Minis makes for close racing as they all run at the front (depending on the weather!) as demonstrated so ably at the Goodwood Revival St. Mary’s Trophy over the last 20 years. This particular FIA-spec, Ford Falcon is on offer directly from actor and comedian, Rowan Atkinson CBE, and Silverstone Auctions are proud to offer it for sale on his behalf. He has owned it since 2006 and the car has made sporadic appearances at various events during the last 15 years including Snetterton, Chimay in Belgium, the Silverstone Classic and of course the Goodwood Revival Meeting. Always professionally prepared and run for him by the very best teams, the car comes to the auction complete with a comprehensive history file detailing all the work, upgrades and maintenance that the Falcon has received during that time.In recent years, between 2014 and the current day, it has been run by John Freeman Racing of Funtington near Chichester, with the last significant monies being spent with them in 2018 (£7,172) on a new radiator, aluminium bumpers and various other works to brakes and engine cooling. There are full details in the organised file of regular work and upgrades throughout Rowan’s tenure but clearly the car was not used in 2019 or in 2020 during the COVID period. The FIA papers are for 'Class CT10 (period F 1962 -1965)' but have now been applied for but the vehicle has not been inspected during the COVID period, although there is no known reason why the car should not immediately re-qualify. The engine was built by renowned specialist, Steve Warrior, to his ultimate specification at the time with very limited running since.Finished in the classic period colour of Turquoise this distinctive car also benefits from being road registered, which means the possibility of Tours and Historic rally events also exists. The car has several MOTs on file but will need a fresh MOT, as well as fresh FIA papers, which have been applied for and the car is simply waiting an inspection. All seats/belts/ fire extinguishers and safety equipment are brand new and therefore 'in date' for the forthcoming season. Spares include a set of wheels/tyres, a limited-slip differential and body moulds which will need to be collected by the successful purchaser. However, it is a super thing and clearly has lived a pampered life with a limited number of events undertaken given the workload and limited time availability of the current owner. The price guide today is realistic, allowing a new owner some room to update the car and once again make it a competitive proposition on the track. Well engineered, dramatically presented and with celebrity provenance, this is a splendidly timed opportunity with the start of the season just around the corner.SpecificationMake: FORDModel: FALCON FIA RACE CARYear: 1964Chassis Number: 4K13F117846Make: Click here for more details and images
1939 Albion FT3 LorryRegistration no. AVP 366Chassis no. 158023Odometer reading: N/AMOT Expiry: N/A*Beautiful Albion flatbed lorry*Rare model*Previously restoredFounded in 1899, Albion Motors was a Scottish automobile manufacturer that also specialised in commercial vehicles. Sadly the company and was sold under British Leyland, but it is notable for producing iconic vehicles such as the Albion Ventura double decker bus. In production from 1939 until 1954, the Albion FT3 was in fact the company's longest lived model, and was originally powered by six-cylinder petrol engines. However, out of practicality and rising fuel prices many were later converted to diesel. This 1939 Albion FT3 is a wonderful early example that was previously restored in 1986. It is finished in a beautiful blue and red contrasting colour scheme that is painted to match the vendor's father's transport company. The colours really help to make the vehicle stand out. This example comes with little history, but does come with original wooden crates on the rear bed. The vehicle runs and drives well, and overall is in a presentable condition. The running gear and suspension are also in good condition. There is still an active Albion owners club for a new owner to join if desired, with many rallies held each year. This is a beautiful vehicle that is now increasingly hard to come by.
