“En Visite” Hand coloured lithograph print by E Montaut, framed 88cm x 47cm. Ernest Montaut (1879-1909) was a French artist who built his reputation as an illustrator of the early machine age, documenting early automobile and air races; he is credited with creating artistic techniques such as speed lines and foreshortening which are still used by artists today to give the impression of speed and movement. After his death, the Montaut studio was run by his wife Marguerite, who signed the works “Gamy”. “En Visite” depicts a Hirondelle Renault below the French Dirigible “Clement Bayard”. See Plate 4
British Motor Company Ltd., £1 preference shares, 189[8], signed by Harry Hewitt Griffin as director and Charles Jarrott as secretary, scrollwork at left, red, about very fine. This was Harry J Lawson`s main company for the acquisition of the Daimler patents with which he was to control the motor manufacturing business in the UK. Originally incorporated as the British Motor Syndicate in 1896 it was reorganised in 1898 as above. The company acquired numerous automobile patents, paying outrageous sums for them, most notably the Pennington patents which proved to be worthless. The company was again reorganised as the British Motor Traction Company in 1901 by racing driver S.F.Edge and Lawson gradually disappeared from the scene. * Emmanuel Bellini (Moroccan, 1904-1989), Port Du Cannes, signed lower left “E Bellini” and inscribed on the reverse 1952, oil on board, 49 x 59cm (19 x 23in). Born in Monaco in 1904, Bellini grew up heavily influenced by the light and bright colours of his native Mediterranean. He was a follower of the Fauvists and based his palette on them. Bellini was a designer of posters for the Automobile Club, and set designer for the opera and theatre. Works by Bellini hang in museums and private collections in Europe and the United States
