‘Ah yes I ment to tell you another thought I had on John Lennon – deep down I feel he staged his own death & that he aint dead’  MANSON CHARLES: (1934-2017) American Criminal who led the cult-based Manson Family, responsible for multiple deaths (including the murder of Sharon Tate) and the subject of Quentin Tarantino's film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. A.L.S., Easy, Manson, six pages, 4to, California Medical Facility, Vacaville, n.d. (21st January 1981), to Nuel Melton Emmons. Manson writes, in part, 'The little things can be done RIGHT would mean we could move some big thoughts for Big bucks….a guy told me once that a person that could think up a life style where they didn't need money that they could have anything they wanted - I told him I had everything I wanted as in at that point of time I was not in a cage…..So I've thought up some little things, that will swing on you doing some little things perfectly - right - I'm treated like a dam fool….Things I could do & put into motion for the good of ONE self & ALL is kept down by the fears of people that keep telling me I'm afraid unless I destroy them with there (sic) own death wish. That makes it hard as hell to git around…..a God dam dog is treated with more respect - we need to be secret agents to git a rubber band, paperclips as the things other convicks (sic) git everyday. Long ago a person that didn't snich (sic) was respected for his word - the prison I've been in for the last years is 99% snich (sic) - There must be someone not sniching (sic) but I've yet to be locked in the place where they are. Ah yes I ment (sic) to tell you another thought I had on John Lennon - deep down I feel he staged his own death & that he aint dead. They been doing that for a long time. It's like when I laugh everyone laughs but when I cry some one dies so I don't laugh & I don't cry. Why do I wright (sic) you said you were gona (sic) wright. I ask about John Lynon (sic) & I watched for your letter. So I'll just say I don't think he's dead. He went crazy & thought he died. If we gona (sic) do radio TV thing we might as well do it right - Big Toys - I would rather have a good guitar but the radio is nice…..Its been hard for me to make plain for anything like tomorrow when my life been on the point & live from hour to hour day to day…..It's no big thing if I git anything - I'm content with nothing because I got lots of good dreams…..You realise there just toys to me & I don't need none of it - I got nothing to do…..' Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Manson. Some light creasing and minor age wear, VGNuel Melton Emmons (1927-2002) American photojournalist and biographer of Manson. Emmons first met Manson briefly when he was imprisoned for automobile theft in 1956, and again under similar circumstances in 1960. In 1979, he contacted Manson and began extensive interviews and his correspondence with Manson resulted in the book In His Own Words - The Shocking Confessions of the Most Dangerous Man Alive (1986).

1913 Straker Squire 15HPReg. no. SD 1726Chassis no. 3168Engine no. 3168Straker & Squire as the company was first known, was established in Fishponds Bristol in 1906 and remained there until 1918 when they relocated to Edmonton, London changing the name to Straker-Squire Ltd. Sidney Straker however had been involved with road vehicles from 1899 when he was producing a steam wagon with Edward Bayley and then with LRL Squire and by 1906 approx. 200 Straker steam vehicles were in use. The firm entered the petrol engine market in 1906 by importing the French built Cornilleau-STE Beuve and marketed them under their own name. Plans were made for Straker to build these cars, but they changed tack and instead produced a 2020cc car designed by Roy Feddon, later Sir Roy. By the time of the 1908 Olympia Motor Show and following some improvements, the car was marketed as the 14/16hp and then for 1910, the stroke was lengthened and renamed the 15hp. For a comprehensive history of the Straker Squire Company we recommend reading an article by the renowned motoring historian, the late Mike Worthington-Williams. The article can be found in The Automobile Magazine dated May 1990 with the second part in the June 1990 issue, of which there are copies in the file.  SD 1726 is on the front cover of the May issue and many accompanying photographs inside. This early Straker Squire was delivered new to the Ayrshire region in Scotland. According to research, it is likely that it carried a four-seat open body. In 1929 the car was retired and dismantled, for ease of storage, and the mechanical parts were stored in a stable. Unfortunately, the body was removed and apparently burnt. At this time, according to a continuation logbook the car was registered to a Mrs. Anne Fletcher of Hillhead, Kilbirnie, Ayrshire. The chassis and majority of the original mechanical components were acquired by a Cyril Herbert of Andover, he embarked on a restoration and built a narrow 2-seater open body based on the design of an original body supplied by the firm. The car then went to Suffolk in 1985 and was used for a short while by the brother of the owner until another early car joined the stable. In the early 1990s a further comprehensive restoration was started but stalled. In 2017 the restoration gathered pace and was passed to a professional restorer who finished the work in March 2018. The body built in the 1950s appears to have been discarded when other period parts were acquired. An original ash frame of unknown make was repaired with new wood where necessary. Original metal parts used include a bonnet, boot lid and driver’s door. The coachwork was then finished in the original dark blue with the interior trimmed in black leather button-back upholstery. The hood sticks are fitted to the car, but a covering will need to be made and fitted. There is also room in the boot for a dickey seat to be fitted to provide extra seating. The car carries a full complement of CAV electric lighting with the correct control panel mounted on the dashboard, and a range of instruments including a Smiths 0-60mph speedometer. Discreetly fitted to the dashboard is a more modern key fitting to operate a starter motor, fitted for ease of starting. This has been fitted so it can be easily removed should a new owner wish to go back to handle start. There is an extensive history file with the car which includes much correspondence with other Straker Squire owners. Although SD 1726 has not been officially dated by the VCC, the car does hold an Events Passport enabling it to be used in their many events. This would have to be renewed by the new owner, but we do not foresee any problems doing this. There is also evidence in the file that the car was presented for formal dating by the VCC, but due to the ongoing restoration at the time the formalities were never completed. A letter from the Late Malcolm Jeal, then Chairman of the Dating Committee, confirms that the Club accepted a valid date of 1913. This process would need to be concluded with the VCC to obtain the Dating Certificate. There are also many copies of period photographs of both touring and racing cars, some old MOT certificates and the aforementioned continuation logbook detailing previous owners. Period literature includes a 1912 15hp sales catalogue, a 1913 catalogue of component parts, a 1910 15hp sales catalogue, a later 1922 sales catalogue, a 1913 Straker Squire lubrication booklet, a framed and glazed original shares certificate and a framed and glazed original advert for the make. Also included in the sale are many useful and unobtainable spares. These include the major part of a 15HP engine, gearbox, complete rear axle, a correct radiator, a couple of wheels as well as two doors from the original destroyed coachwork. This is an exciting and rare opportunity to acquire a quality, desirable 4-cylinder English Edwardian motor car which, as well as being useable, would be a welcome addition to VCC events.Estimate: £38,000 - 42,000To be auctioned along with a fantastic selection of other vehicles on March 5th at our Showell Farm site, SN15 2NU. Viewing is welcome prior to sale and all cars are sold as seen, condition reports can be requested on each lot by contacting us direct. Lots are not available to buy prior to auction. Fully illustrated catalogue is available on the Richard Edmonds Auction website. Bids can be made online, by telephone or live on site. All lots are subject to commission.Vehicles that are un-registered or on foreign plates may require Import Duty and Vat to be paid upon purchase via HMRC prior to registering with the DVLA for a UK plate, if you are not sure please ask. For classic cars over 30 years this equates to 5% Duty on the final value.

1970 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Mulliner Park Ward Transmission: automaticMileage:40988Rolls-Royce Motors formed Mulliner Park Ward by the 1961 merger of two Rolls-Royce subsidiaries: Park Ward of Willesden, London, a Rolls-Royce subsidiary since 1939 and H. J. Mulliner & Co. of Chiswick, a Rolls-Royce subsidiary since 1959. Mulliner Park Ward continues to operate as the vehicle customisation division of Bentley Motors Limited, the successor of Rolls-Royce Motors. The Corniche was a development of the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow with the two-door variants of that model marketed as the ‘Silver Shadow Mulliner Park Ward’ two-door fixedhead coupé which was first seen in 1966 followed by the convertible version in 1967. The very handsome coachwork design was by John Polwhele Blatchley. The model was assembled and finished in London at Mulliner Park Ward as a continuation of the 1965 Silver Shadow Coupé, the Corniche name was applied from 1971 to all two-door coupés and convertibles. This rare Rolls-Royce was originally registered to the U.K. in March 1970. The car was exported to California and spent its life in the Golden State. This quintessentially British automobile must have been an impressive sight in America’s 31st State. This right hand drive example presents well in the period colour combination of cream and brown coachwork over a beige interior. The car was returned to the U.K. in 2022 and the registration process is in hand. On its return, this impressive Rolls-Royce has benefitted from a £15,000 recommissioning by marque specialist Ghost Motors of Claygate Cross, Kent. Full details of the comprehensive works are in the history file and include new window motors, four new tyres, new exhaust system, four new headlamps and a new battery. With only 505 early Mulliner Park Ward convertibles built this is an opportunity to purchase a rare car with recent expenditure. The car is supplied with copies of the original order forms and chassis cards supplied by the RREC and should prove to be a good investment.

Lot 193

1965 Amphicar 770 Transmission: manualMileage:14620The Amphicar is an amphibious vehicle, designed by Hans Trippel and manufactured by the Quandt Group in Lübeck and Berlin-Borsigwalde. The Amphicar was designed to be marketed and sold in the USA; compared to most boats or cars, its performance was modest, resulting in less than 4,000 being produced between 1961 and 1968. Nevertheless, it is still among the most successful amphibious civilian vehicles of all time and is still often prized and preserved as a novelty collectible automobile today. From the front the appearance of the under-surface is slightly pointed and sharply cut away; the wheels are set low, ensuring that the vehicle stands well above ground level when on dry land. Front and rear bumpers are placed low on the body panels and the water propulsion is provided by twin propellers mounted under the rear bumper. Power was supplied by the 1147cc engine from the Triumph Herald; the Amphicar engine had a power output of 43hp. Referred to as the ‘Model 770’, the Amphicar could achieve speeds of seven knots in the water and 70mph on land. This left hand drive example was made for the European market and has been retained in a private collection for over 20 years. Believed to be one of only eight Amphicars in the UK, it was restored a number of years ago and is finished in Eau-De-Nil with a white vinyl roof and black interior. We are advised by the vendor that this Amphicar 770 should arrive at auction with a new battery and in running order, however it will require further restoration especially to the rear of the car where a few leaks have been detected. It was used to tow the under-16 Namibian Ski Champion as part of a publicity campaign 10 years ago. The vehicle was first registered on 11th January 1965 and is supplied with the original buff logbook, together with some previous MoT test certificates (the last one expired in 2004) and some interesting newspaper articles featuring LMV 7C. These immensely entertaining car/boats are hard to find and generate huge interest on land or water. One Amphicar owner was quoted saying ‘We like to think of it as the fastest car on the water and the fastest boat on the road.’ The ideal viewing platform for next year’s Henley Regatta!

Lot 194

2013 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Transmission: manualMileage:63473The Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W204) is the third generation of the C-Class and was introduced on 18th January 2007 at the Geneva Motor Show. The C63 AMG is reportedly the first AMG-Mercedes designed from the ground-up. Its AMG C-Class predecessors had essentially featured bolt on performance modifications, and according to Car and Driver these earlier AMG models suffered from understeer and heavy steering. The C63 AMG has a revised front suspension that is shared with the CLK 63 AMG Black Series. The C63 AMG also has the quickest, most responsive steering of any Mercedes automobile to date. The Mercedes-Benz M156 engine, provides the C63 AMG with more horsepower and torque over its direct rivals such as the Audi RS4 and BMW M3, offering a 0-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds.Originally registered on 17th May 2013 this beautiful C63 is finished in Pearl White with black leather trim. The rear wheel arches have been widened by 90mm and the rear axle extended. The car has been Stage 1 remapped and now produces 507 bhp with improved gear changes. A carbon front spoiler has been fitted as well as a F1 carbon defuser. Under door lighting has been fitted which is generally only found on the Black Series range. This is clearly a very well cared for and much loved example, presenting in excellent condition. Seven services have been carried out, the first five by main dealers and latterly by marque specialists, the last service was carried out on 25th January 2023. Supplied with a V5C registration document and a current MoT test certificate, together with a history folder. This C63 AMG is very versatile, offering blistering performance (where permitted) or sitting in traffic, whatever happens it will put a smile on your face.

On offer from the Piddington Collection, formerly the property of Ron Hickman, the South African-born, Jersey-based automobile designer and inventor responsible for the original Elan, the +2 and the Europa but best known for creating the Black and Decker 'Workmate'.Ron Hickman grew up in Greytown in Natal province, South Africa and from an early age he was passionate about motor cars, carving models of them in wood and sketching them for their owners. On leaving school, he trained in law for six years in the Department of Justice but retained an ambition to style cars that could not be realised in South Africa. So in 1954, he borrowed £100 from his father and set off for London. He soon found a job with Ford in Dagenham as a clay modeller in the styling department and seven months later he became a stylist on the 105E Anglia. In 1956, Hickman, whose ambitions lay beyond styling 'worthy' saloons for Ford, 'bumped into' Lotus founder Colin Chapman at the Earls Court Motor Show. As we know, Chapman was a brilliantly gifted engineer whose early competition cars were enjoying success but he was in need of ingenious, energetic characters such as Ron to help get his ambitious new Elite road car into production. Brought in as a production engineer with Lotus in North London, Ron became a general manager and eventually a director, however, the Elite proved to be a false start. It was beautiful to look at and drive but too complicated to build and too frail in service to have the mass appeal Chapman was looking for. Something more practical was needed. The Elan, introduced in 1962, is arguably the finest of Chapman's road cars and it was Hickman, working alongside John Frayling, who got it into production. The car skilfully blended Grand Prix-inspired engineering finesse – ultra-stiff backbone chassis, all-independent suspension, disc brakes and a lusty twin overhead camshaft engine – with off-the-shelf components from the parts bins of the big manufacturers. This approach saved money and simplified production, the Elan's engine block was borrowed from the Ford Classic and the steering rack from the prosaic Triumph Herald; yet this tiny 1600cc two-seater was so light and perfectly balanced that it could accelerate as quickly as Jaguar's current E-Type.The Elan, with Hickman's light uni-mould glass-fibre body, brought the thrills of single-seat racing car handling to the road driver who could muster £1,200, or less if he built it from a kit. Its handling is still unsurpassed and the backbone chassis, conceived by Hickman as a temporary measure for developing the car's suspension, formed the basis of every subsequent Lotus of the classic era. As well as devising the car's famous vacuum-operated pop-up headlamps and its distinctive bumpers, Hickman is attributed with having come up with its name – by looking through the ‘E’ section of the dictionary.Ron left Lotus in 1967 to start his own design company and develop the 'Workmate'. Black & Decker eventually signed an exclusive manufacturing deal in 1972 for his Mark II version, with a lightweight foldable alloy frame so it could be stowed in the boot of a car, but by then Hickman had already sold 14,000 Workmates by mail order. Even with a comparatively low 3% royalty, Hickman soon joined the tax-exile bracket, moving in 1977 to Jersey, where he built a modernist villa with views of St Brelade's Bay and filled it with his own labour-saving gadgets. In 1994 he was honoured with an OBE.This gorgeous Lagoon Blue Sprint DHC, KXC 67F, was purchased directly by Ron on 27th November 1996 in its currently restored state from the restorer Neil Myers, shipped to Jersey, popped into Ron’s garage and only used occasionally. It must have felt rather special to open his garage doors and see two of his creations, the Elan and the Workmate side by side knowing that both had received worldwide acclaim. The car was purchased from the Hickman family by our vendor on the 9th March 2021 and, although it remained exactly as it was post-restoration, it was given a very light recommission by Neil Myers upon its return to the UK and prior to joining the Piddington Collection. In common with the other Elans on offer today, KXC 67F retains its original chassis, body and engine and naturally your inspection of this important Elan is welcomed. It's accompanied an original Elan tool kit, Certificate of Vehicle Provenance, spare keys, 2 copies of the Elan Sprint Owners Handbook, lots of photographs and acres of interesting correspondence, as you might expect from the man who designed the Elan. A goldmine for Lotus enthusiasts.SpecificationMake: LOTUSModel: ELAN SPRINT DROPHEAD COUPÉ 'RON HICKMAN'Year: 1971Chassis Number: 7108180446GRegistration Number: KXF 67KTransmission: ManualEngine Number: N24850Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 13774 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Black VinylClick here for more details and images
