A BUILDER'S HALF-SHIP MODEL FOR THE TURBINE STEAM MOTOR YACHT ARA DESIGNED AND BUILT BY CAMPER & NICHOLSON LTD. 1914, COMPLETED FOR THE FRENCH NAVY, 1917, AND SOLD TO W. K. VANDERBILT II, 192254in. laminated and carved hull, finished in red below the waterline with dark green topsides with plain deck mounted to display board with waterline tinting and builder's inscription lower left -- 12 x 60in. (30.5 x 152.5cm.); together with a set of nine facsimile ¼in:1ft scale plans for the Ara, stamped Camper & Nicholson 1979, and some historical data(A lot)Large numbers of sea-going steam and motor yachts were chartered or commandeered for government service during the Great War, but few enjoyed such a fascinating life as the Ara. Built for pleasure in an English boatyard, bought by the French Navy for conversion into a fully-fledged naval sloop and then, when hostilities ended, resold to the colourful scion of one of America’s wealthiest and most famous families who not only turned her back into a luxurious pleasure craft but also used her as a serious oceanic research vessel. This remarkable character was William Kissam Vanderbilt II [WKV] (1878 – 1944), an immensely rich automobile and power boat enthusiast, yachtsman and renowned collector of ethnographica and the curiosities of the natural world, and the great-grandson of the legendary American railway tycoon “Commodore” Cornelius Vanderbilt. Known to his friends as “Willie K”, WKV enjoyed great success racing power yachts in the years preceding the Great War and, when his own wartime service finished, succumbed to the lure of the ocean by buying a 1,400 ton twin-screw ex-naval sloop named Ara in 1922. Ordered and begun in Camper & Nicholson’s Southampton yard in 1913, her completion was delayed until 1917 owing to the default of her owner. Then acquired by the French government and converted into an armed naval sloop, she sailed under French colours for the remainder of the War until decommissioned and returned to Camper & Nicolson pending sale in 1922 and where she was spotted by WKV. Given his wealth, it seems curious that he didn’t order a brand new motor yacht to his own specifications but, for reasons unknown, he bought Ara and reconverted her into a pleasure yacht for his own use. Possibly the result of his second marriage in 1927 to a woman who perhaps craved travel, the following year he and his new wife Rosamund, a few friends and a ‘crew’ of forty left Centerport, New York State, on the first of their two circumnavigations of the globe. Quite apart from the crew required to man the vessel, the yacht’s complement also included scientists and photographers to analyse and study natural phenomena found en route and to produce detailed reports for the American Museum of Natural History as well as for WKV’s own private museum. Having obtained his Master’s certificate in 1918, WKV mostly skippered Ara himself and although she carried three watch officers, more often than not it was WKV himself at the wheel. The epic voyage of 28,738 miles took six months and WKV deemed it so successful that he very soon bought a second, even larger motor yacht, the Alva, and in her completed his second circumnavigation in 1931. By then, the Ara had already been sold, but whatever life she encountered thereafter, it seems unlikely that it was as interesting as what had gone before.fine overall condition, topside paint containing fine craquelure associated with age
The Beetle was a masterpiece of innovation and economics - but never lost its sense of fun and character; this delightfully original example would do any enthusiast proud. The Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle changed the world. Like the globally successful Ford Model T, it was a simple, properly-engineered automobile that was inexpensive enough to bring motoring to the masses. And like the Model T, it was strong and reliable and was built around the world in mind-boggling quantities. The Beetle’s heritage goes back to the pre-war KdF-Wagen, whose name stood for Kraft durch Freude and translates loosely to ‘strength through joy’. Conceived from the experiments of Porsche Design’s Project 12, it used a revolutionary rear-mounted engine with Aluminium and Magnesium castings. With a simple yet effective platform chassis, the car underwent countless revisions and prototypes before, eventually, the Series 38 design would embody the Beetle as we know it.With 40bhp from its 1192cc horizontally-opposed, four-cylinder engine with Solex carburettor, a 4-speed manual gearbox, independent front suspension with upper and lower control arms and transverse torsion bars, rear suspension by swing axles with trailing arms and torsion bar and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, it was indeed properly-engineered.VW’s Beetle soon became ubiquitous all over the world, even in the United States, where horsepower had always ruled. Over the years, details changed, and displacement increased, but the basic look remained. When production ceased in Mexico in 2003, 21,529,464 had been built in plants on every continent but Antarctica. The car presented here is a right-hand drive 1963 Volkswagen Beetle finished in Birch Green, an original and unrestored example that comes with extensive history and service records. In more recent times, it's been treated to an engine rebuild and an overhaul of the electrical system, with our vendor stating that the body, similarly, is in ‘excellent condition’, with in excess of £12,000 worth of invoices to back this up. The indicated mileage of 66,904 (at the time of cataloguing) would seem wholly commensurate with its well-preserved condition.Volkswagen's Beetle is an important part of automotive history and this very wholesome example would make an ideal first classic for an enthusiast at a most reasonable outlay.Specification Make: VOLKSWAGEN Model: BEETLE 1200 Year: 1963 Chassis Number: 5711101 Registration Number: ADE 402A Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 7886379 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 66904 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Green Cloth Click here for more details and images
Buick's slogan Looks fine for '49! wasn't wrong; a magnificent American classic with serious style and presence, and optioned with the iconic 'Sweepspear' chrome design - a real beauty! The Buick Roadmaster of 1949 was a seminal model, introducing a new design-language to the marque and reinforced an emerging new psychology around buying a car - choosing a Buick had become more of a lifestyle decision and that trend would continue as buyers embraced the new ‘fuselage style’ that was inspired by aircraft design. These numerous new design features included a larger, chrome-laden grille, and a curved windshield - but some other elements to this new model were to become even more significant, influencing not only Buick's styling theme for years, but creating a whole new style of car for the US-market.The 1949 Roadmaster Riviera, along with other newly launched, glamorous models – the Cadillac Coupe de Ville and the Oldsmobile 98 Deluxe Holiday Coupe – debuted for the first time on a mass production model for the US-market the ‘2-door pillarless hardtop coupé configuration (the design offered a fixed roofline with disappearing side windows and no B-pillar; when the windows were lowered, the car took on the look of a convertible with its top raised - British cars already had the 'Fixed Head Coupé'; thus, combining the style of a convertible with the security and weather protection of a sedan/saloon). The Riviera offered the best of sporty design and closed practicality, and it would influence two decades of automobile design around the world. Its name would remain a part of Buick’s lineage for 50 years.Next up, and again significantly for the Buick design-language of its cars to come, was that the 1949 Roadmaster first introduced the (now) iconic ‘VentiPorts’ which went on to be a traditional Buick styling cue for many years. These are a series of three or four ‘vents’ on the front wing behind the front wheels. Four vents were displayed on each of the Roadmaster and Century's front wings, with three on the wings of the Super and Special to denote junior level products. The sales brochure noted that VentiPorts helped ventilate the engine compartment, possibly true in early 1949, but they became non-functional sometime during the model year.It is believed that the original idea for these portholes was to fit them with lights that would flash on and off in sequence with the engines firing order – the idea being that VentiPorts put the driver in the control of an imaginary fighter airplane. Upon seeing this prototype set-up fitted to a designer’s own ’48 Roadmaster, Buick chief Harlow Curtice was so delighted that he ordered that (non-lighting) VentiPorts be installed on all 1949 Buicks, with the number of VentiPorts (three or four) corresponding to the relative displacement of the straight-eight engine installed.Furthermore, the 1949 Roadmaster Riviera was also notable for first introducing its popular optional ‘Sweepspear’ chrome body side moulding, which would soon become another Buick trademark. This chrome-plated strip started above the front wheel, then gently curved down nearly to the rocker panel just before the rear wheel, and then curved around the rear wheel in a quarter of a circle to go straight back to the taillight. The ‘Riviera trim’, as it was initially called, was also made available on the Roadmaster convertible late in the model year, and was made standard on most body styles at the beginning of the 1950 model year.On top of all this ‘influence’, the 1949 Roadmaster Riviera specification included a 150bhp ‘Fireball’ 320 CID overhead-valve inline eight-cylinder engine (with dual downdraft carburettor), Dynaflow automatic transmission, independent front coil-spring and semi-elliptic leaf-spring rear suspension, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes – all for $3,203 in 1949.With production numbers from that year showing only 4,343 Riviera models were produced and a frequently used Buick resource that was published in 1979 states that at that time, less than ten of these vehicles were accounted for, this is now a rare and very special car.The car presented here is a 1949 Buick Roadmaster Riviera, a truly exceptional example of its type, which was originally restored by the technical advisor to the Buick Club UK. It is believed to be one of only 50 surviving examples worldwide and the only one in the UK and has featured at The Cartier Style et Luxe Lawn, one of the finest Concours d'Elegance events in the world, where the most beautiful cars are presented in exceptional condition. The car was also a former winner of the NEC Car of the Year award. Always garaged and sparingly used, it has always been maintained to a very high standard, accompanied by extensive records of its servicing and restoration history. As our vendor says ‘this car has to be seen to be believed’; we couldn’t agree more, we look forward to seeing you.Specification Make: BUICK Model: ROADMASTER RIVIERA Year: 1949 Chassis Number: V1N1531452615342105 Registration Number: YAS 241 Transmission: Automatic Engine Number: 55382807 Drive Side: Left-hand Drive Make: LHDClick here for more details and images
One of only 500 UK-supplied, right-hand drive examples, this Taiga Green CSL was subject to an impressive restoration some years ago with only light use since. The 3.0 CSL is a lightweight, performance-oriented version of the standard 3.0 CS/3.0 CSi Coupé. Utilising the E9 platform, the 3.0 CSL was unveiled at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show and was introduced in May 1972 as an homologation model for the German Touring Car Championship developed by a separate division within BMW AG, a division that would later become BMW Motorsport GmbH. The CSL achieved some great results, with wins at Le Mans in the touring car class in 1973 and 1974, the IMSA GT Championship in 1975 and winning the European Touring Car Championships every year from 1973 to 1979 (apart from a minor blip in 1974). The 'L' in the designation meant leicht (light), unlike in other BMW designations, where it meant lang (long).A total of 1,096 CSLs were built, with just 500 of these being imported into the UK. The great majority of UK cars had the 'City Package' option fitted, designed to make the 3.0 CSL more usable as a daily driver. These versions retained the standard interior trim, negating the total weight saving somewhat, but the other benefits were retained, including aero kit, thinner gauge steel and aluminium parts. Early CSLs, produced in late 1971 and early 1972, utilised the standard 2,985cc M30 inline-six engine with twin carburettors and were only offered in left-hand drive. They were replaced by a fuel-injected model displacing 3,003cc available in right-hand drive during late 1972 and early 1973. Fuel-injected CSLs with the 3-litre motor have VINs that run from 2275001 through 2275429 (left-hand drive version) and 2285-001 through 2285-500 (right-hand drive UK cars). On offer here, #2285-236 is a fine example of these 3,003cc UK, right-hand drive cars and was sold new in the UK on 21st March 1973. In 2011, it was subject to a full bare-metal restoration and painted in the period correct colour of Taiga Green by 355 Automobile Restorations International whilst at the same time, the engine, gearbox and other mechanicals were rebuilt by Ferrari Specialists SMDG. The comprehensive history file contains a record of the rebuild and earlier receipts form BMW specialist Jaymic, BMW Guildford and Munich Spares. The interior remains in great condition having been retrimmed and the signature wood veneer restored to a high level. It was purchased by our vendor in 2017 and has been used sparingly since. Recent work for a new MOT by marque specialists Everything M3s and Rabsport Engineering has included new tyres, wheel bearing adjustment, front caliper rebuilds and a new battery. This lovely, stylish BMW 3.0 CSL Coupé in glorious Taiga Green represents a fine example of the car that defined Touring Cars in the 1970s and 50 years later, still has a presence that few cars can match.Specification Make: BMW Model: 3.0 CSL Year: 1973 Chassis Number: 2285236 Registration Number: JJU 404L Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 2285236 Make: Interior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images

Footnotes:十九世紀 蘇作 「共樂昇平」玛瑙巧雕Provenance: Major Harry Stanley (1910-1997), who in 1957 was recruited from the Royal Automobile Club in London to run the newly formed Hong Kong Tourist association, and thence by descent 來源:Harry Stanley少校(1910-1997,1957年被招募于倫敦皇家汽車俱樂部,負責運營新成立的香港旅遊協會,並由後人保存迄今The motif of a figure riding a mythical fish or ao is often linked to the Imperial examination phrase 'seizing the top spot' (獨占鰲頭). Traditionally, this phrase refers to scholars who, after ranking first in the exams, stood on a turtle-shaped (also called an ao) stone in the Imperial palace. However, the figure on the ao actually represents an Immortal named Qin Gao, who, according to the Han dynasty book Lie Xian Zhuan, rode a fish out of the Zhuo River after practicing alchemy for over 200 years. This myth was later celebrated in Tang poetry and became a popular motif on Jingdezhen porcelain during the Ming and Qing dynasties, symbolising scholarly success and good fortune. Indeed, the Tang poet Cen Shen (岑参 715-770) wrote, 'I wish to follow Qin Gao, riding a fish into the clouds and mist.'For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Registration No: 387 ALM Frame No: 201048 MOT: ExemptUK registered from newWith original blue logbookTransferable registration numberProject scooter chassisV5C for use on UK roadsDürkoppwerke's history began in 1867 when Heinrich Dürkopp started making sewing machines out of the backroom of a clockmakers shop. In 1870 they moved to their own premises in Bielefeld adding shoe making machines. In 1885 the firm began making bicycles and ball bearings. By 1898 the firm began making cars and motorcycles including the famous Knipperdolling small car. However after WW1 the company was in debt and the automobile division was sold to Mercedes Benz. Durkopp continued to make cylindrical bearings including for tanks and weapons during WW2. After the war the company jettisoned its bearings business and returned to sewing machines, bicycles and motorcycles including scooters. The Durkopp Diana scooter was launched in 1953 and was splashed across the headlines early in production when Miss Germany ‘won’ a Diana in 1954. It was extremely well built with sleek lines and was ahead of most of the competition with a powerful engine that produced 9.5 HP and the headlight on the handlebars. The later 194cc 4 speed Sport model produced 12 HP and could reach speeds of 100 km/h while the 171cc Sport TS version produced 10.8 HP. Weighing in at 150kg (330 lbs) the Diana had remarkable luxurious build quality all over. The electrics were Bosch 12 volt electric start (with kick start as back up) and used a number of fuses in a car style fusebox. The foot gear change could be knocked into neutral regardless of which gear you were in (positive neutral). Hella lights were as standard all over (the rear lights are the same as used on the Messerschmidt KR bubble cars). The attention to detail is impressive with small details such as chromed aluminium and rubber strips on the side panel edging to protect the side panels where they meet the chassis, heel strips to protect the side panels against passenger shoes, wide foot boards for the pillion and 4 floor strips each side for the riders feet. The large Denfeld dual seat was impressively sprung with comfortable support for the pillion. The embellishers on the side panels are chrome over brass. Apart from keys for the ignition, seat and tool box there was a further ‘secret key’ hidden from view in the upper part inside the tool box. A total of 24,963 Dianas in all forms were produced before production ended in 1962. In Great Britain Diana Concessionaires based in Molesworth, Surrey offered a range of optional accessories and had a service centre in Hampton Wick, Surrey. Available in 1961 for the princely sum of £219 10s 9d, it was more expensive than the Lambretta TV175 Series 2 (£189 17s 6d), or the Vespa GS (£188 8s 3d). In 1961 a road test by Scooter News Mechanics summarised that ‘the Diana in any of its forms was one of the best scooters made today’.Here we present a rare Mk2 TS Sport chassis with the fixed headlight. The original black paint is in very good condition and the chassis is virtually rust free. The original starter key is present as is the fuel tank. Despite not having an engine the scooter is fully road registered with modern V5C and the number plate is transferable. The full range of parts needed including engine are all available (except a seat) in Lot XX. Only for sale as the vendor can no longer use it due to his age. In 1961 a road test by Scooter News Mechanics summarised that ‘the Diana in any of its forms was one of the best scooters made today’.Here we present a rare matching numbers Mk2 TS Sport with the fixed larger Hella headlight. Registered new on 30th January 1961 by Kings Motors of Bristol, it was acquired by our vendor 54 years ago in 1970. We are informed by the vendor that it was in full running condition when parked up. We are told that this scooter recently had a new chain and Hepolite piston fitted. This is the version with the larger VDO speedometer which incorporates the ignition warning light and headlight indicator. Probably unique to a scooter in 1961, the Mk2 Sport had a headlight ‘flasher’ located on the handlebar with the lights switch and horn control. All original keys are present, not copies. Everything is original. The mileage is currently 23255 and genuine as backed up by the supplied MOT in 1970. The original buff log book is present giving us full history from new. The scooter is fully road registered with modern V5C and the number plate is transferable. For more information, please contact: Paul Diamond info@vintagescooters.co.uk 07768 313001

1959 NSU Prima III KL Scooter, 150cc, Registration Number TRV 840, Frame Number 2356912, Engine Number 3427244.Sold with V5C and a large history file including cancelled buff logbooks and copies thereof, a large selection of manuals, brochures, and other information. The German representative of 1950s European scooter mania, NSU was a motorcycle and automobile brand created in 1873 in Riedlingen Donau by two young technicians named Stoll and Schmidt. They first manufactured knitting machines, then produced bicycles in the new address in Neckarsulm, named after a nearby river. NSU bicycles quickly became popular and production shifted to motorcycles in 1901. The 1.5 bhp engine was imported from Zedel in Switzerland. In 1903, they designed their own engine and created their first two-speed planetary transmission before World War I. In 1904, they marketed six different models of motorcycles. NSU introduced its popular 3 bhp 61 cu.in. V-twin engine in 1905. The same year, they turned to manufacturing automobiles and light trucks. They produced vehicles for the army during World War I. In 1923, the 8/24 model automobile with an aluminum body was introduced, although the economic recession led the automobile department to be sold to FIAT in 1928.NSU returned to manufacturing bicycles in 1931. Adam Opel’s bicycle organization was purchased and the Quickly and Pony motor bicycles were introduced. At the start of the 1950s scooter boom, NSU obtained a licence to manufacture the Lambretta scooter, which was marketed as the "Prima". The Prima III was produced from 1957 to 1962. The 9.5 bhp single-cylinder engine propelled it to 56 mph with two riders.TRV was bought from auction by our vendor. It appears to be in very original and unmolested condition. It has subsequently been treated to a mechanical overhaul including a correct Bing carburettor, 10 thou over rebore with new old stock piston, and the coil and stator plate being rebuilt at considerable expense by specialist Readspeed. This was in anticipation of an extended road trip which was unfortunately cancelled due to lockdown. The bike has not been used since, but should be a straightforward job to recommission and put into use.
