1960 BSA 591cc M21 'AA' Motorcycle CombinationRegistration no. APB 89AFrame no. BM20S 13229Engine no. BM21 13381One of the organisations that used BSA's faithful old M21 'sidecar tug' was the Automobile Association, whose distinctive yellow-liveried combinations, ridden by patrolmen wearing military-style khaki uniforms, were a regular sight on British roads well into the 1960s. Today these AA 'combos' never fail to attract a crowd at classic vehicle shows. This M21 was first registered on 18th March 1960 and is believed to be an original AA machine. The vendor advises us that the sidecar chassis is an original AA model and that the body is newly built to correct AA specification and finish. The paintwork was done at the same time and is finished to a high standard. Last run in February 2022, the machine is offered with some expired MoTs, a 2018 parts invoice, and a V5C document. Offered without keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to biddingFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Cardinal and Flowering Dogwood" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for Balke's Birds and Flowers of the 50 States, cancelled November 21, 1985. The male Cardinal zealously guards his territory. He warns off rivals or enemies with fierce cries; if the intruder persists, the Cardinal races out to attack on short, rounded wings. He may even strike at his own image in a window, mirror, or automobile hubcap if he is riled enough. Cardinals may build their nests in backyards, hedgerows, along roadsides, and on farms, although they seem to prefer open woods. Found virtually everywhere in America except for the extreme north, the Cardinal flits about canals and nests in bushes along banks. Just as often, the Cardinal's nest may be hidden in a thicket, or in a sapling. To the Flowering Dogwood goes the honor of having been nominated the most beautiful native American flowering tree. Spring finds it covered with four-petaled flowers, each up to four in. across. The most common color of the wild Dogwood is white, but shades of pink to near red have been found. In autumn, the flowers turn flaming red, coinciding with the ripening of the small, berry-like fruits that are also brilliant red. The branch pattern is fairly horizontal with upturned branch tips, resulting in a rather flat-topped crown. Flowering Dogwoods may reach forty feet high with equal spread, although smaller sizes are more common. Image Size: 11 x 12.75 in. Overall Size: 19.25 x 21 in. Unframed. (B09797)

Lot 372

Basil Smith (British, B. 1925). "Bugatti Royal Type 41" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Trains & Boats & Planes & More Collection Description Card for the Bugatti Royale Type 41. One of the Italian designer Ettore Bugatti's most impressive cars, the Royal Type 41 was also known as "La Royale" or "Golden Bug." He first envisioned this grand car in 1913, when he described it to a good friend as "a piece of machinery above criticism." But it would be another thirteen years before he actually started building the automobile. Initially, he planned to construct twenty-five cars, but he actually built only six or seven. The engine itself was later produced en masse for the Bugatti railcar. The Royal Type 41 started as a two-seated roadster by the direction of M. Armand Esders, a wealthy French clothier. It was considered one of the most elegant auto bodies ever designed. But because Esders never drove at night, the car had no lamps. Later, the car was customized as a coupe de ville, possibly for King Carol of Romania. It included toughened bullet-proof glass windows, and plush dove-grey worsted seats that could hold two or three passengers. During the German occupation of Paris, the car was well hidden in the sewers, but the original roadster body was destroyed during a bombing raid. Image Size: 6 x 7 in. Overall Size: 9 x 10 in. Unframed. (B10813)
