Lengthy and interesting A.L.S., Louis, four pages, 8vo, Clermont-Ferrand, 3rd February 1906, on the Hotel de l´Univers printed stationery, to his mistress Jeanne Hatto, in French. Renault sends a lengthy and warm letter to his mistress. Renault´s French text contains multiple mistakes as he stopped his studies early and based his business success on his intuition, imagination and pragmatism, and referring to his recent and his forthcoming trips, states in part `Il ne fait vraiment pas froid et la route est tres supportable derriere la glace même par ce villain temps. J´ai fait arrange la capote et il n´y a plus de courant d´air. Voici mes projets. It's really not cold and the road is very bearable behind the front car glass even with this bad weather. I have had the hood fixed and there is no more air flow. Here are my projects. I intend to leave on Sunday morning for Le Puy and will surely be by Monday morning at Halger in Urrieux near St Etienne where I expect to hear from you…. If the great Opera drops you, come and find me… If the great Opera don´t drop you, try to drop them around February 15th. My big beloved chouchou, you need a little rest as well as me") Renault further sends his kisses, and refers to her lips, to his love for her and expects that she is behaving like an angel in Paris. Accompanied by the original Hotel de l´Univers printed stationery envelope, addressed in Renault´s hand, postmarked and stamped. Left corners clipped and small tear to the centre fold, none affecting the text or signature. G Jeanne Hatto, an opera singer, was Renault´s mistress and long-time companion.

1913 Renault DQ (four-cylinder 8500cc 45hp) Transmission: manualMileage:In the early years of the twentieth century the development of Renault as a make of motorcars was significantly enhanced by its successful participation in motor racing that culminated in a Renault winning the first ever Grand Prix race. From then on until the Great War, whilst the public most frequently encountered the make in the form of the ubiquitous twin cylinder models that were available as both private cars and taxicabs, there were always cars of substantial engine capacity and horsepower in the Renault range, even after the largest, the 9½ litre six-cylinder 50-60hp was discontinued in 1910. Its place as the largest model was first taken by the 8½ litre four cylinder 35hp Type CI and by 1913 this had evolved into the Type DQ with identical engine dimensions but with an increased output of 40-45hp. Because of its horsepower rating the DQ has sometimes been compared with the better-known Vintage period 'Renault 45' (40CV in France), but this was a six-cylinder car developed from the pre-Great War Type ES. The lineage of the DG is traceable back to the 1906 Type AI four-cylinder 7½ litre 'Vanderbilt Cup' model, a number of which survive.Having spent many years in the United States, this rare large capacity DQ was brought back to Europe in the early 1990's at which time a restoration was carried out. Sherwood Restorations of Nottingham rebuilt the car along with a raceabout coachwork body built by E.J. Wakefield and Son of Byfleet. The accompanying history file shows many receipts for work done on the car by Sherwood's at the time. The car was then sold in 1992, by auction, to a new owner who owned it up until 2006 following a lengthy period of storage. The car had been sent to Keith Bowley's Ashton Keynes restoration shop for an engine rebuild shortly before the sale. The current vendor purchased the car himself in 2012 and committed to a thorough mechanical restoration including another full engine rebuild with vintage car specialist Jim Stokes. An avid collector, with an eclectic collection, the vendor insists all of his vehicles are ready to drive at any time. No expense was spared and the cars history file shows over £30,000 was spent with Jim Stokes between 2012 and 2016 to get the car in to the good mechanical order we find it today. During this period a new body was also built for the car with a beautifully crafted, distinctive €˜boattail' rear. The car is able to cruise happily at 60mph and reported to both run and drive very well by the vendor. Whilst the lack of any front brakes makes for an exciting drive, the early open seater experience is something to behold. Believed to be one of only two chassis imported to the UK and believed to be the only one remaining in the UK, this incredible automobile is a rare sight to behold.

Lot 268

1971 Mercedes-Benz 230 Limousine Transmission: automaticMileage:44900  The name Limousine or Limo, as they are popularly known, originated from the Limousin region in central France from a type of hood worn by the population that resembled the covering for a carriage. Later, it was known as the cover for the driver on an automobile, while today, it is known as a luxury vehicle that has a longer frame and wheelbase to accommodate more space behind the driver, at times more than is needed. There are also models that are stretched to accommodate further passengers and include a further seating arrangement behind the driver. These seats face forward and may be folded in the down (and out of the way) position. In general limousines have either six or eight seats - the Mercedes-Benz 230 being one of these. The W114/W115 models were the first post-war Mercedes-Benz production car to use a newly engineered chassis, not derived from preceding models. The new chassis format of semi-trailing rear arms and ball-joint front end would be used in all new Mercedes passenger car models until the development of the multi-link rear suspensions of the 1980's. Originally registered on 13th September 1972 this W114 Limousine is finished in white with tan vinyl interior, boasts the rare sliding glass divide and is capable of carrying up to eight passengers. The bodywork is in good order throughout and the trim, finished in tan, is particularly smart. The middle (jump) seats fold away easily to leave plenty of legroom for the rear passengers. Ample chromework adorns this example and again this is in good order. Power is delivered by the 2292cc six-cylinder petrol engine and the car is described by the vendor as driving very well; this 230 Limousine is offered for sale with a V5C registration document and an MoT test certificate until March 2023. A treasured car from our vendor who has owned it since 2008, boasts genuine low mileage and is a versatile and handsome period Mercedes-Benz. Guide Price £8,000 - £15,000
