De Lesseps eventually landed in a field at Grange Farm, Harleston, near Lichfield. After an overnight stay, De Lesseps headed back towards Burton and managed to lose his way again, this time landing in a field near Nottingham, he finally arrived back in Burton having taken 2 days to complete what should have been a 30 minute flight, Julian Mamet born on December 24 , 1877in Bourges and died on1 st April 1932[ 1 ] , was a mechanic, the French aviator. In the service of Louis Bleriot, he contributed to the feat of the first crossing of the English Channel by plane in July 1909. c.1903 Georges Richard (Anonyme)Reg. no. BS 8083Chassis no. 490Engine no. 359The Richard Company was founded in Paris in about 1850 making photographic and optical equipment and then, like so many early pioneer car firms, moved onto making bicycles. The two brothers Georges and Max offered a Benz like car in 1897 which was joined by a small car based on the Belgian Vivinus. In 1901 Henri Brasier joined the company from Mors and it was under his regime the Georges Richard Company started making larger cars along Panhard lines with two or four-cylinder engines ranging from 10 to 40 hp. After 1905 the firm changed its name to Brasier and Georges Richard left the firm to set up his own company under the brand name Unic. The car offered for sale is an attractive and powerful veteran. It has a 2.3 litre (16.4 hp) twin cylinder engine coupled to a 3-speed and reverse gearbox. With a full four seat double phaeton body finished in red, which the owner describes as good but with some patina, and black button upholstery it can easily carry adults to Brighton in comfort, ascending Redhill, Clayton and Pyecombe hills without assistance, which is always a bonus. The current owner acquired the car in 1993 and entered every London to Brighton until 1999. The car completed all but one run which was halted due to a broken half shaft.Sharp eyed readers will notice the heading for a maker of the vehicle. Whilst it was in Germany the car was dated by a German club as a 1902 Georges Richard and indeed that is recorded on the V5. The car was presented to the VCC dating Committee in 1994 whilst under the Chairmanship of the late Malcolm Jeal, the ex-editor of The Automobile Magazine and respected motor historian. Despite extensive research they were unable to categorically say the chassis was Georges Richard or that the engine was the original. They were however of the opinion that all the parts were of the correct period and the main components were an entity from an unknown maker and issued a Certificate of Eligibility, a copy of which is in the file. This Certificate enables the car to be entered not only for the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, but also for VCC events including the ever popular Single and Twins Rallies. The car was subject to some work in the 1990s. Some was carried out in our vendor’s professional workshop whilst the more specialist work such as white metalling and some machining was carried out by sub-contractors. This work included rebuilding the axles and gearbox and a new flywheel being manufactured. The car has been in storage since 2001 and will require careful re-commissioning. The leather cone clutch is currently stuck but we understand that with applications of neatsfoot oil should come free fairly easily. The only concessions to modern motoring are the fitting of electric lights as a safety precaution, and the fitting of modern ignition coils.Included in the sale are the Certificate of Eligibility, a German passport dated 1988, a V5C, dating correspondence between the vendor and the VCC dating Committee, sundry bills and old MOT certificates, literature and photographs showing BS 8083 on the London to Brighton Run, four brass lamps, stick basket, wheel spanner and front and rear tonneau covers, the front doubling as a knee warmer for those ever so wet events in November. Estimate: £40,000 – 60,000
1934 Talbot Lago T120 Baby ProjectRegistration no. 842 YUEChassis no. 85172Odometer Reading: N/AMot Expiry: ExemptOwned and campaigned by Karl Ludvigsen*Largely complete set of spares*Extensive historyOn the dissolution of the Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq combine in 1935, automobile engineer Major AF 'Tony' Lago bought the Darracq factory at Suresnes and continued production, selling his cars as Darracqs in the UK and Talbots in France. The revitalized marque embraced both sports car and Grand Prix racing, and in 1937 achieved victories in the French Grand Prix and the Tourist Trophy; from then onwards it was an uphill struggle against the state-subsidized might of the German and Italian opposition. There were, however, many notable successes in the immediate post-war years, including three Grand Prix wins for French Champion Louis Rosier. This T120 has a fascinating history and is a truly exciting project to be returned to the road, the car was restored in France before returning to England, unfortunately the car was damaged when competing in a rally in Wales. The car has since been repaired accordingly and is ready to be restored to its former glory. Fitted with the lovely 3-litre engine coupled with a Wilson pre-selector gearbox, this T120 would provide an engaging and speedy driving experience. The car is accompanied with bills through the 80s, 90s and 2000s and a V5 document. Please click the link to view the walkaround video of this lot: click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: 20/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1924 Renault NN BerlineRegistration no. DS 8895Chassis no. 162477Odometer reading: TBAMOT Expiry: Exempt*Recently restored Renault NN*Immaculate condition *Large history file*Restoration featured in The Automobile (October 2020)The NN was first presented at the 1924 Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris as the successor for Types KJ and MT. This little Renault is typical of the everyday motor car in France in the 1920s and 30s. Many NNs were used as taxis in towns and cities around the country: this model is believed to have originally served as a Paris Taxi. From 1904 until 1930 Renault favoured placing the radiator behind the engine using a flywheel with vanes to provide the cooling air. In this way they could provide a much smoother and pleasing outline to the bonnet. These early Renaults with 'coal scuttle' bonnets with twin radiators either side of the engine gave them a distinctive Art Deco appearance. Registered DS 8895 this car was imported from Belgium in 1989. Its first colour was yellow and the body unusually only has doors on the near side, very useful for a taxi as the passengers can only get out safely on the kerb side. The restoration was completed by Classic Cars of Bath between 2015 and 2017. The chassis was cleaned and painted, the springs were checked, cleaned and re-greased. The Hartford shock absorbers were rebuilt. The four-wheel brakes had new brake linings. The steering wheel was recovered. A new bulkhead was made together with a new petrol tank by Concept Racing. The body frame was rebuilt by Sowerby Ash Framing (keeping as much of the original wood as possible). A previous owner had painted the car white for a family wedding, and when the bodywork was repaired it was resprayed 'pistachio green', in keeping with the Art Deco style. The car was then driven to Pritchard's coach trimmers and the original front leather seats were repaired. The rear seats were covered in Bedford Cord. The window-pulls in leather (like a train carriage window) were refurbished. New headlining and carpets were also fitted.Michael Ware, The Automobile (October 2020), reported on the restoration for his final Back on the Road and was taken round the airfield at Bicester. The car has been used around Bath and Bristol and campaigned in the VSCC Light Car & Edwardian Section Welsh events in 2018 and 2019 – around the hills of Radnor Forest and Wye Valley. A quantity of spares including engines and axles supplied from a Renault Freres club member are available by separate negotiation. Although not required, the car passed the MOT test in 2019 (expired 2020). Included in the sale are various owners' and workshop manuals. A photographic record of the 2015-17 restoration is available.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 85/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Looking fabulous in Capri Blue, this sparkling DB6 benefits from an upgraded 4-speed auto box and a comprehensive history file.Dating from 1966, DB6/2563/R was delivered new to H.W motors Ltd. for its first owner, J.F.P TateFinished from new in Capri Blue with Dark Blue Connolly hide and dark blue carpetsThe accompanying Aston Martin Heritage Trust Certificate confirms the car was right-hand drive and fitted with a Borg-Warner, 4-speed automatic gearboxFurther optioned with Chrome Wire Wheels, 3-eared spinners, Fiamm horns and Avon TurbospeedsThe automatic four-speed gear box has received the 'Chapman' upgrade offering seamless gear changesFull and interesting ownership history. With our private vendor for the last seven yearsFull matching numbers, factory spec and in a fabulous colour. A lovely example The culmination of Aston Martin's long-running line of DB six-cylinder sports saloons, and thus considered by many to be the last 'real' Aston, the DB6 was introduced in 1965, updating the DB5. Although recognisably related to the Touring-styled DB4 of 1958, the DB6 abandoned the Carrozzeria Touring-developed 'Superleggera' body structure of its predecessors in favour of conventional steel fabrication whilst retaining the aluminium outer panels.Increased rear-seat space was the prime DB6 objective so the wheelbase was now four inches longer than before, resulting in an extensive restyle with a more-raked windscreen, raised roofline and reshaped rear quarter windows. Opening front quarter-lights made a reappearance but the major change was at the rear where a 'Kamm tail' with spoiler improved the aerodynamics, greatly enhancing stability at high speeds. These many dimensional changes were integrated most successfully, as the DB6's overall length increased by only two inches. The Tadek Marek-designed six-cylinder engine had been enlarged to 3,995cc for the preceding DB5 and remained unchanged. Power output on triple SU carburettors was 282bhp, rising to 325bhp in Vantage specification, complete with triple Webers. Borg-Warner automatic transmission was offered alongside the standard ZF five-speed gearbox, and for the first time, there was optional power-assisted steering. High profile owners in the early days included HRH Prince Charles, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Twiggy and Peter Sellers.DB6/2563/R was delivered new to H.W motors Ltd for J.F.P Tate, Esq. finished in Capri Blue with Dark Blue Connolly hide (VM 3282) and dark blue carpets. Although subsequently resprayed, the Aston is still presented today in the same Capri Blue with its very nicely aged original interior. The Aston Martin Heritage Trust Certificate confirms the specification being right-hand drive and fitted with a Borg-Warner, 4-speed automatic gearbox plus non-standard equipment including chrome roadwheels, heated rear window, three-eared hub spinners, Fiamm horns, a powered aerial and Avon Turbospeed tyres. The car was in daily use early on in its life and regularly serviced and maintained including a cylinder head overhaul and front suspension rebuild in 1967. It is still matching numbers, today, unlike many DB6s.The car's second owner was a Mr Pitkethly in 1984 who sold it, in 1992, to a Mr Hine who, in turn, later sold the DB6 to Le Riche 'Automobile Restorers' of Jersey in 2002. A little later, Le Riche were persuaded to part with the Aston by a Mr Hoy of Jersey (Reg. J 6929) who kept the vehicle until its export out of Jersey in December 2009.The next change of ownership was to Aston Martin Works Ltd. in April 2014, who sold it to the owner prior to our vendor. He appears to have cherished the car judging by its lovely overall condition today, and covered less than 600 miles in nearly 4 years. This car retains much of its originality, character and is still on its original number plate. It's matching numbers throughout and presented in the original colour of Capri Blue, a rare hue for a DB6 but one that really suits it making the big GT look slimmer and lighter somehow and will, without a doubt, turn heads as it continues to age gracefully. It is also noted that the automatic four-speed gear box has received the 'Chapman' upgrade, and this is very clear when you experience the smoothness of the shifts.OPC 308D is supplied with a fascinating history file direct from the current private owner who has had it for the last seven years, covering very few journeys but all of them memorable we are assured! The history file includes a Heritage Trust Certificate confirming both the original factory specification and matching numbers status.SpecificationMake: ASTON MARTINModel: DB6Year: 1966Chassis Number: DB62563RRegistration Number: OPC3 08DTransmission: Auto 4 SpeedEngine Number: 400-2461 Make: Interior Colour: Blue LeatherClick here for more details and images

1960 Aston Martin DB4 'Series II' Sports SaloonRegistration no. not UK registeredChassis no. DB4/266/L*Landmark Aston Martin model*Rare and original left-hand drive example*Delivered new to Switzerland*Conservatively estimated and offered at No Reserve Footnotes:'When the products which are raced bear such a close resemblance to those which can be bought by the public, as do those of Aston Martin, only the most biased can deny the value of racing in improving the breed. It should be no surprise (that the DB4) should be based on an engine which first appeared in experimental form in some of last year's races.' - The Autocar, 3rd October 1958.At its launch in October 1958, the DB4 marked a major turning point for Aston Martin as it was the first car of the David Brown era which neither used a chassis derived from the experimental Atom of 1939 nor an engine designed under the auspices of W O Bentley. Moreover, it was the first Aston Martin to carry Carrozzeria Touring's 'Superleggera' bodywork, in which light alloy panels were fixed to a framework of light-gauge steel tubes welded to a platform chassis. Although styled by Touring, the DB4's gorgeous fastback coachwork was built under license at Newport Pagnell by Aston Martin's Tickford subsidiary, which employed some of the finest panel beaters in the industry. The result was a car whose sleek lines were described as 'unmistakably Italian and yet... equally unmistakably Aston Martin.' The 3.7-litre, six-cylinder power unit was the work of Tadek Marek and had first been seen at Le Mans the previous year in the works DBR2 sports-racer.Manufactured between October 1958 and June 1963, the DB4 developed through no fewer than five series. The first series had already undergone a number of improvements, including the fitting of heavy-duty bumpers after the first 50 cars, before the second series arrived in January 1960. A front-hinged bonnet, bigger brake callipers and an enlarged sump were the major changes made on the Series II. To many, the Series II is the zenith of the aesthetic design, retaining the large and purposeful bonnet scoop and the delicate cathedral tail-lights. Including Vantage and convertible models, approximately 1,100 of these iconic 'Gentleman's Express' sports saloons were produced between 1958 and 1963. According to the copy guarantee form on file, left-hand drive chassis number '266/L' was sold new via Patthey, the Swiss Aston Martin agent, to Mr Robert Firmenich of Geneva. The car was supplied with fully chromed road wheels and a heated rear light (screen) and left the factory finished in Desert White with black Connolly leather interior. Other documentation consists of copies of previous Swiss and German registration documents and the copy invoice relating to its sale between E Thiesen to Axel Schütte Klassische Automobile in March 2008. With Weber carburetors, drilled pedals, no bumpers and tow-eyelets, it would appear 266/L enjoyed an element of competitive use with a former owner. Subsequently exported from the EU and kept in storage, it may require some re-commissioning prior to road use. Please also note the car will attract the low import duty rate of 5% if it is to remain in the UK.Lot to be sold without reserve. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * N* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.N If purchased by a UK resident, this machine is subject to a NOVA declaration, whilst the responsibility of submitting the NOVA rests with the Buyer to do so, Bonhams will facilitate the process by engaging an agent (CARS) to undertake the NOVA on the Buyer's behalf. Some would say it's the most beautiful racing car of all time. Although it underwent detail changes through the years and the radiator was enlarged, its lines were virtually unchanged from its appearance in the Grand Prix of the Automobile Club of France in July 1924, through to its final, 51 version of 1931-32.' - Autocar. By the early 1930s Ettore Bugatti had established an unrivalled reputation for building cars with outstanding performance on road or track; the world's greatest racing drivers enjoying countless successes aboard the Molsheim factory's products and often choosing them for their everyday transport. The principal building block of this success was the legendary Type 35, arguably the quintessential Vintage-era sports car, which made its debut in August 1924 at the Grand Prix de l'ACF at Lyon-Givors. The Type 35's 1,991cc straight-eight engine was derived from that of the Type 30 but incorporated five roller/ball main bearings instead of three and an improved lubrication system. In line with Bugatti's established practice, each cylinder's three valves were actuated by a single overhead camshaft. This state-of-the-art engine went into a conventional chassis with leaf springs at the front and quarter elliptics at the rear, and which boasted a novel hollow front axle and alloy wheels. The Type 35's debut gave little indication of what was to come, as the factory team of five cars was plagued by tyre troubles and could achieve no better than 7th place at the finish. Despite this debacle the Type 35 in its various forms would go on to become arguably the most successful racing car of all time, commencing with winning the inaugural World Championship for Manufacturers in 1926 and securing countless victories for privateers. The most powerful member of the family, the Type 35B with 2.3-litre supercharged engine, first appeared in 1927 and represents the model's ultimate development. This Type 35B was assembled as a car in the 1970s by a UK collector using many correct components and a reproduction chassis frame from Alan Wragg. Subsequently the car was purchased by Martin Johnson of Cumbria, who sold it to the current owner in 1986 (receipt on file for £23,000). The owner then embarked on a complete restoration, which was entrusted to Robin Townsend of Stroud. Additional original components were fitted including an un-numbered GP front axle; an ex-Brescia gearbox number '1385', modified to GP form; and a rear axle number '129 12x50 H'. The eight-cylinder 2.3-litre engine is a Crosthwaite & Gardiner unit, which carries number '137T'; a supercharger is fitted, numbered '74'. The car was completed in 1991 and a photographic record of the restoration comes with it. Since 1991 the Bugatti has been used extensively by the enthusiast owner and is a very well known example. A highly successful car, it has won many trophies at Bugatti Owners Club hill climbs at Prescott, the best times achieved being 45.81 seconds on the traditional short course and 55.66 seconds on the long course. It has competed at Shelsley Walsh on many occasions too, and in 1999 was driven at the Worcestershire venue by the late Sir Stirling Moss, who commented on how excellent the car was to drive. The Bugatti also competed at the Monaco Grand Prix Historique. The Bugatti has always been maintained regardless of cost, the most recent expense being a replacement clutch in November 2020. The car is correctly registered with the DVLA and comes with a V5C document and MoT certificates for the period 1990-2011 (now exempt). Also on file is a letter dated 1992 from, David Sewell, then Registrar of the Bugatti Owners Club, confirming the authenticity of front and rear axles and the gearbox.A stunning car to use on the road, it is currently fitted with its Zenith (petrol) carburettor, while the methanol carburettor is included in the sale. The Scintilla magneto has recently been rebuilt and performs brilliantly. A rare opportunity to acquire a very well sorted and prepared Type 35B.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
1988 Vegantune Evante Series 1 Transmission: manual Mileage: 33450Renowned worldwide for its successful racing engines, the Spalding-based firm of VeganTune diversified into car making in the early 1980s with the Lotus Elan-inspired Evante, a separate company - Evante Cars Ltd - being set up to handle its manufacture. Although Elan-like in appearance, the glassfibre-bodied Evante employed a stronger, tubular-steel spaceframe chassis rather than the Lotus’s backbone type and was powered by VeganTune’s own Ford-based VTA twin-cam engine. Producing 170bhp and 140lb/ft of torque from its 1.7 litres, this engine, with its belt-driven camshafts and accessible water pump, was reckoned much easier to maintain than the Lotus version. Only produced to individual customer order, the Evante failed to weather the late 1980s recession. After only a limited number had been made, the operation was sold to a consortium of Spalding businessmen, which continued production of the Evante 140TC. In the autumn of 1992, Evante was sold to another specialist vehicle manufacturer – Newark-based Fleur De Lys Automobile Manufacturing Limited – which re-engineered the chassis to accept the 1.8 litre Ford Zetec 16 valve engine. This rare example of this British sports car is presented in Metallic Blue with blue leather interior with attractive Walnut dashboard. The car has had just four owners from new, the last one keeping the car from 1997 to 2021. It was sent back to Vegantune main agent at 20,000 miles and was fully upgraded to Series 2 Sprint specification. This included new upgraded bearings and pistons, reworked big valve head and camshafts, twin 45mm twin choke carburettors, new stainless steel exhaust and upgraded Spax adjustable coil over shock absorbers. The car also benefits from a new hood and comes with its tonneau covers which are in good condition. There are two history folders accompanying the car with specification sheets, old MoTs and receipts for work carried out. It will be fully recommissioned by the present owner prior to auction which will include a full engine service and tune, brakes overhaul and a new MoT test certificate will be supplied. It is powered by the lively and great sounding 1700cc Twin Cam engine which provides exciting performance with great handling to match.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. 1995 Chevrolet Suburban LT2500 Transmission: automatic Mileage: 32500The Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size SUV from Chevrolet and the name started in 1934 for the 1935 U.S. model year, making it the longest continuously used automobile nameplate in production. It has traditionally been one of General Motors' most profitable vehicles. The 1935 first generation Carryall Suburban was one of the first production all-metal bodied station wagons. It now comes with three engine options: a 5.3 litre V8, 6.2 litre V8 or a 3.0 litre Inline-6 turbo diesel. The GMT400-based Suburbans were introduced in December 1991 for the 1992 model year. The similar pickup truck models had switched to the newer platforms in the 1988 model year. Both 2WD and 4WD models, designated ‘C’ and ‘K’, were offered, as well as half ton and three quarter ton (‘1500’ and ‘2500’) models. Trim options included a base-level version, the LS, and the LT. Interior seating arrangements allowed for either bucket or bench seating in the first row and optional third row bench. The vehicle could be configured from two to nine passenger seating. Transmissions included the 4L60 four-speed automatic in the 1500 series, and the heavier duty 4L80 four-speed automatic in the 2500.This superb American SUV vehicle was delivered new to its first owner the late Emir of Qatar, His High Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Hamad Al-Thani. It is presented in two tone black/gold with beige leather interior. The interior is in superb condition as is the exterior paintwork and has the added benefit of the third row set of seats allowing for nine people to be transported in extreme comfort with plenty of leg room. It is powered by the mighty 5.7 litre V8 mated to an automatic transmission and comes with air conditioning. This vehicle is thought to have been used by the staff of the late Emir, probably his security detail and has only covered a mere 32,500 km from new. An extremely practical family SUV with substantial interior space for people and luggage, together with its very interesting history, this must be one of the finest available of this marque.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. 1908 De Dion-Bouton AL2 8hp Rear Entrance Tonneau Transmission: manual Mileage: The names of De Dion and Bouton are inextricably linked with the pioneer years of the motor car, initially in company with Trépardoux in the building of light steam carriages, the first of which appeared in 1883. In the early 1890s De Dion and Bouton turned their attention to the internal combustion engine, much to the annoyance of Trépardoux who quit in 1894, leaving his erstwhile partners to develop what was, in effect, the first high-speed internal combustion engine.Engineer Bouton's power units developed significantly greater output than their contemporaries from Daimler and Benz, yet matched them for reliability. Small wonder then that De Dion Bouton engines were adopted by many other manufacturers both in Europe and the United States. Early 137cc engines ran at speeds of up to 1,500rpm, and the first internal combustion-engined tricycles were built in 1895. The 250cc engine of 1896 developed approximately 1.75hp and made the contemporary Benz engines seem positively antiquated. Early De Dions were rear engined and of the vis-à-vis type – where the passengers sat facing the driver but from 1902 onwards a more conventional layout for a motor car was adopted, one of the first of this kind being the Type O. By this time, De Dion's fast-revving, single-cylinder engines were offered in 4 1/2hp, 6hp and 8hp variants. All featured mechanical inlet and atmospheric exhaust valves, and were noted for their reliability, which is borne out by the number surviving today. The De Dion offered here although registered on the V5 as a 1906 at present is verified by the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain as a 1908 example of the 8hp with desirable rear entrance door which, when new, we believe cost £208. With right hand drive and wheel steering, it represented De Dion-Bouton's latest thinking at the time of its introduction, embodying important developments in design, construction and coachwork in advance of the firm's earlier quadricycles. Presented in green coachwork with beige trim, this example was purchased by our vendor from the ex De Dion-Bouton Club Chairman and the history file includes details of both operating instructions and the model line ups from the era and the full report from the Veteran Car Club. Offered in very good order with a recently rebuilt engine this car has also known modifications including Zenith Carburettor and electric starter. A wonderful example of an iconic turn of the century vintage motorcar with the engine to which De Dion-Bouton made an inestimable contribution to the early development of the automobile.
