A silver plated statue of Eugen Sandow, cast as Sandow striking a bodybuilder's pose in front of a ruined classical column, the base indistinctly signed, set on an oak wooden plinth mounted with a plaque inscribed: PRESENTED TO C. LANG NEIL, AS A TOKEN OF PERSONAL REGARD AND A MEMENTO OF LONG AND VALUED BUSINESS SERVICES, BY EUGEN SANDOW, JANUARY 1ST 1911; standing on a tall oak arts & crafts display stand, height of statue 72.5cm., 28 1/2in., oak base 20cm., 8in., oak display stand 95cm., 37 1/2in., offering an overall display height of 188cm., 74in.; sold with a signed photograph of C. Lang Neil (3) Eugen Sandow was a Victorian strongman and showman who holds a special place in history as the pioneering father of bodybuilding & physical education. Eugen Sandow was born on 2nd April 1867 in Koenigsburg, East Prussia, Germany. His real name was Frederick Mueller and his father was a prosperous jeweller. His interest in physique was inspired by a visit to Rome during which he admired the fine statuary in the city. He excelled at track & field events and gymnastics at school. His parents sent him to medical school but upon discovering that their son was only concentrating on the study of anatomy with the intention of becoming a physical fitness trainer, they withdrew their financial support. Consequently, the young man was forced to earn a living as a professional wrestler and as an artist's model. Through his successes Sandow began to disseminate his teachings & techniques through a newspaper column which added further to his fame. In 1893 Sandow brought his show to the USA where it received a sensational response at the Casino in New York City, Boston's Tremont Theatre and the Trocadero in Chicago. At the latter venue the impresario Florenz Ziegfeld (later to become famous for the Ziegfeld Follies) became his manager and Sandow's nightly fee increased to as much as $3500 on occasions. Ziegfeld also managed to secure a number of lucrative advertisement and endorsement contracts. Indeed, Sandow's name became in demand for products as diverse as tonics & health food to bicycles and cigars. Now world famous and a household name, Sandow ran an extensive mail order business from his London headquarters and served as a personal trainer to the royal family. He collaborated on many books and published a magazine entitled Sandow's Magazine of Physical Culture. Sandow died as the result of an automobile accident on October 16 1924, but left a legacy that would evolve through the likes of the Mr Universe contest and personalities such as Charles Atlas and Arnold Schwarzenegger. He is buried in Putney Vale Cemetery The present sculpture was presented by Eugen Sandow to C. Lang Neil who was his Advertising Manager on 1st January 1911. It is understood to be one of seven of these large statues commissioned by Sandow and given by him to a selection of individuals who helped further his career. The statue is sold with a black & white studio portrait photograph of C. Lang Neil which is signed and dedicated to his mother in 1929. PROVENANCE: C. Lang Neil, donee of the statue. Thence by family descent to the present vendor.
A Swiss silver pocket/stop watch presented by The Automobile Club on the occasion of the 1903 Gordon Bennett Cup in Ireland, by Stauffer Son & Co., the rear case inscribed AUTOMOBILE CLUB, GORDON-BENNETT CUP RACE, IRELAND, 1903, the inside of the case further inscribed MRS. W. BIRTWISTLE, BILLINGE SCAR, BLACKBURN, movement running, enamel dial damaged. James Gordon Bennett Jnr. (1841-1918) is perhaps best remembered for sending Stanley off to find Dr Livingstone in Africa, and for his name being adopted as an exclamation of surprise, a reference to his reputation for leading a hedonist, playboy lifestyle. Having taken over from his father as the publisher of the New York Herald, he financed a series of annual international motor races for the Gordon Bennett Cup from 1900 to 1905. Great Britain had won the event in 1902 courtesy of S.F. Edge driving a Napier and with it the right to host the following year's event in his native country. Racing at this time was conducted on closed public roads, but this was illegal in the British Isles. A special Act of Parliament was rushed through to allow a 103-mile circuit centred on Athy, just south-west of Dublin in Ireland, to be sanctioned for the 1903 Gordon Bennett Cup. As a tribute to the Emerald Isle, the host nation's team of cars were painted in what thereafter would always be referred to as 'British Racing Green'. Victory in the 1903 race went to the German team with Camille Jenatzy in a Mercedes averaging just over 49mph for the 328-mile race around the winding Irish lanes. This watch was presented on the occasion of the 1903 race by the Automobile Club to the wife of William Birtwistle, a wealthy cotton mills owner who lived in the Elizabethan mansion Billinge Scar, a five-acre estate near Blackburn. Typical of the Victorian and Edwardian industrial aristocracy, Birtwistle was a yachting, golfing and motor car enthusiast, whose servants numbered full time mechanics. As an aside, one of William's brothers Richard Birtwistle turned out for Blackburn Rovers FC when he wasn't too busy running the Roe Lee cotton mills, and even scored Rovers' opening goal in their 1884 F.A. Cup final win.

1929 ALFA ROMEO 1750 SUPER SPORT EX-BORIS IVANOWSKI 1929 IRISH GP WINNER Estimate £400000 - 450000 Registration Number UU 79 Chassis Number 0312909 Engine Number 0312909 Engine Capacity 1752 Paint Colour RED Trim Colour BLACK MOT Expiry Date T.B.A. When Vittorio Jano defected from FIAT to Alfa Romeo at the end of the 1923 season he effectively caused the contemporary Grand Prix formbook to be rewritten. Among the most gifted automobile engineers of the twentieth century, his first Alfa Romeo model - the legendary P2 - comfortably outclassed its Bugatti, Delage and Sunbeam opposition. Winner of both the European and Italian GPs in 1924 (a feat it repeated the following year en route to securing the inaugural AIACR World Championship for Manufacturers), the supercharged two-seater was still collecting silverware some six years later - as witnessed by Achille Varzi's sensational 1930 Targa Florio victory. However, there was far more to Jano's genius than just competition cars.Introduced at the April 1925 Milan Motor Show but not released to the public for another two years, the Alfa Romeo 'NR' (later rechristened the '6C-1500') boasted an enviable specification. Derived from that of the P2, its channel-section pressed-steel ladder-frame chassis was equipped with all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension and four-wheel drum brakes. Notably smooth, flexible and free-revving, the model's 'clean sheet' 1487cc straight-six engine made artful use of aluminium-alloy (crankcase, sump) and cast-iron (cylinder block / head). Initially available in single overhead-camshaft guise only, this 'base' unit was soon augmented by an assortment of normally aspirated and supercharged 'twin-cam' variants as Jano sought to ensure class-leading performance.Hand-built to exacting standards and often clad with bespoke coachwork, the 6C-1500 was predictably expensive. Keen to boost sales, Alfa Romeo embarked on an active competition campaign. While 1927 witnessed a number of domestic successes, it was not until the supercharged cars came on stream that the 6C-1500 really started to establish an international reputation. As well as being driven to victory on the Mille Miglia by Giuseppe Campari and Giulio Ramponi, 1928 also saw force-fed 6C-1500s scoring wins in the hands of such luminaries as Enzo Ferrari (Circuito di Alessandria, Circuito di Modena) and Constantino Magistri (Giro di Sicilia). Yet by the season's end, the Alfa driver on form was undoubtedly Boris Ivanowsky. Not content with winning the Spa 24-hours, the former Russian Imperial Guardsman also dominated that year's Coupe Georges Boillot and Circuit des Routes Pavées.Debuting at the February 1929 Rome Motor Show, the 6C-1750 was intended to keep Alfa Romeo one step ahead of the competition. Nigh-on identical to its 6C-1500 sibling (save for an engine capacity increase to 1752cc), the newcomer offered a similar choice of wheelbase lengths and single overhead-camshaft or 'twin-cam' powerplants. Though, from a racing standpoint the 'SS' (or 'Super Sport') remained the most desirable derivative combining as it did the lightest chassis with the most powerful engine. A point reinforced in April 1929 when Campari and Ramponi piloted one to their second successive Mille Miglia victory (indeed blown 6C-1750s took seven out of the top ten places that year). As head of Alfa Romeo (British Sales) Ltd, F.W. Stiles was understandably eager to raise the marque's UK profile. In addition to running his own team of factory-backed 6C-1500 SS racers during the 1929 season, he offered support services to the 'privateer' 6C-1750 SS racers of Leonard Headlam and Dr. J. Dudley Benjafield. Naturally, Stiles extended the same courtesy to the Hon. Anthony Brunner when the latter purchased chassis number 0312909 in June that year (though, intriguingly there is no record that Alfa Romeo (British Sales) Ltd supplied the car). Road registered as 'UU 79' not long after, the
