Automobilia Vehicle - A 'barnfind' 1904 Historic Holsman Model 3 two-seat High Wheeler Horseless Carriage Runabout Piano body. Purchased for the London to Brighton Rally. With age related BS 8363 number plate (not SV), Chasis no. 246, with distinguishing Black Detz lights and rear mudguards only.Fully verified by The Science Museum, Tuckett Brothers, Cherished Car Insurance, State of New Jersey (copies) and DVLAThis Holsman High Wheeler, made in Chicago in 1904, was recently recovered from a local yard clearance where it had languished for years. Its existence was not previously known by the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain. It is thought there is only one other Holsman in this country. Before it came to the UK in around 2002, the High Wheeler belonged to Franklin B Tucker of New Jersey, who was very well known in US veteran car circles and was a past-President of the AACA (the Antique Automobile Club of America - the equivalent of the VCC in the UK).December 10th 1972 New York Times8 Years A-BuildingFranklin Tucker of West Caldwell has rebuilt a 1905 rope-driven Holsman literally from a pair of license plates. Mr. Tucker had been summoned to the family's carriage house to appraise what appeared to be an unusual set of license plates, and it was there that he discovered a pile of the original Holsman parts.Eight years were spent in assembling the rest of the parts, and today the machine, with its high wheels and two- cylinder air-cooled engine, can be seen cruising along with the rest of the antiques.August 11th 1978 New York TimesFranklin B. Tucker of West Caldwell, in his second term as national president of the club (Antique Autobile Club of America), points out that the hobby involves the entire family. The New Jersey Region Lists 435 members, with the wives admitted free if they belong to the national organization. Most hobbyists agree that while people seem to be most interested in the value of their restored automobiles they try to discourage inquiries because their automobiles are beyond value to their owners. Mr. Tucker has owned his 1913 Metz Roadster for 30 years. He also owns a 1924 Franklin and a 1905 Holsman.Eight years were spent in assembling the rest of the parts, and today the machine, with its high wheels and two- cylinder air-cooled engine, can be seen cruising along with the rest of the antiques. We have traced part of the history of this particular car, chassis number 246, with the help of American experts. We now know that it was discovered around seventy years ago by Franklin B Tucker as a pile of parts. His reassembly and ownership of the remarkable car was the subject of two articles in the New York Times in the 1950s. Copies of these are included with the car.The English buyer planned to drive it in the annual London to Brighton veteran car run but after an early journey to Ireland, it broke down before he was able to do so and was put away.'High wheelers' were popular rural America in the first decade of the 20th century, built to straddle rocks in the centre of the road. The Holsman was regarded as the very best of these, coming to be known as 'the Cadillac of high wheelers.' Holsman sold about 2,500 of them over a period of 8 or 9 years from the beginning of the 1900s. This very early example from 1904 is their 'Type 3'.It has a correct air-cooled flat twin engine which still turns over. Amongst the large quantity of spares which will also be sold (including two more sets of wheels in lot 250A and 250B).Franklin B Tucker wrote the only book about Holsman cars, part history and part workshop manual. It was printed in 1994 in a very limited edition of 100 copies. We have located one of these and will provide an electronic copy of the whole text to the purchaser. The provenance pack to accompany the car will include colour photographs from its final trip to the Irish mountains and a number of letters regarding the car and its history, plus the bill of sale from Tucker to its new Somerset owner.Film of similar Holsman cars can be seen on YouTube listed as:• The Holsman Automobile 1898 start engine• A Drive Back in Time: The Holsman Revisits Cow Canyon• 1907 Holsman Automobile_0001.wmv• 1906 Holsman Auto buggy ride• 1902 Holsman High Wheeler• Neville Museum Minute - Holsman Runabout Automobile• 1907 Holsman ticking over

THE ITALIAN JOBOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine- Folded Paramount, 1969A very clean folded poster with only faint general scattered crimping, light separation of the cross folds, and sporadic staple marks in the borders. In this sparkling British crime comedy, Michael Caine stars as Charlie Croker, a Cockney crook who, newly released from jail, decides to pull off the heist of a lifetime: the daring theft of $4 million in gold bullion being transported through Turin, Italy to make a downpayment on a new automobile factory. His outstanding performance as Croker, arguably the role for which he is best known, ignited his career. Since then, Caine has been one of the hardest-working actors on screen, often appearing in several films in a year. Likewise, this film, which was a massive hit in Great Britain - named one of the top 10 British films by the British Film Institute - and has become a true classic, celebrated for its unforgettable dialogue ("You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!"), and one of the most spectacular car chases ever caught on film as three Mini-Coopers careen through Turin. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Pioneer Aviator Pilot William Birchenough signed card inscribed HENDON 1914. William Taylor Birchenough (1891-1962) was a pioneering British aviator and test pilot. After leaving Eton Birchenough developed an interest in flying and joined the Grahame-White training school on 7 February 1913. Over the following months he carried out his training under the instruction of Marcus Dyce Manton before being awarded his aviator's certificate on 13 June 1913 in a Grahame White Biplane. Subsequently, he worked for the Grahame-White Company. Birchenough started to regularly compete in flying races at Hendon, from August 1913 onwards often flying a G-W 50 Gnome aircraft or Box-Kites. In January 1914 Birchenough took part in the Upside Down Dinner held at the Royal Automobile Club . Attended by many aviation pioneers, the dinner was held in recognition of those who were first to loop the loop in an aeroplane. In 1914 he competed in a series of air races and won the Shell Motor Spirit Trophy for a special speed contest. On 6 June he flew a Maurice Farman aeroplane at the last Aerial Derby before the outbreak of war and two weeks later he competed in the London to Manchester handicap. On 3 August 1914 Birchenough flew a Maurice Farman aeroplane from Hendon to Leighton Buzzard to carry out a demonstration at a Flower Show but was forced to return after learning that the Government had imposed a ban on flights that day of more than three miles from an aerodrome due to fears of impending war. The following day war was declared in Germany. After the outbreak of World War One he joined the Aircraft Manufacturing Company (Airco) as a test pilot responsible for delivering planes to the Aeronautical Inspection Department (AID) at Farnborough and putting them though their tests. In August 1916 The Aeroplane reported that Birchenough was one of the steadiest and most skilful pilots in the country and that since the outbreak of war he had passed a legion of machines through their tests In 1917 he was elected a member of the Aeronautical Society of Great Britain. Birchenough married Eileen Moncrieffe Mesham of Pontruffydd Hall in 1915. He died on 15 December 1962 in Wimborne, Dorset, England. Good condition. PUCCINI GIACOMO: (1858-1924) Italian composer. A highly unusual, large vintage signed and inscribed 13 x 11.5 photograph, the image depicting the maestro lying on a bed, the upper part of his face just visible above the covers, as he returns aboard a motor boat to Torre del Lago the day after his near fatal automobile crash on 25th February 1903. At his side his future wife, Elvira, can be seen seated in a full-length pose and they are accompanied by five other men including Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica. Signed to a light area at the base of the image, ‘quasi sesse mensi dopo e ancora invalido, G Puccini’ (Translation: ‘almost six months later and still disabled, G Puccini’) and with an inscription, place and date, Torre del Lago, 16th September 1903, in his hand to the lower photographer’s mount. A rare signed image of the composer. Some scuffing and staining to the image, affecting the signature (which remains legible) and with extensive small chips to the edges. About GGiuseppe Giacosa (1847-1906) Italian poet, playwright and librettist who wrote the librettos used by Puccini for La boheme, Tosca and Madama Butterfly in conjunction with Luigi Illica.Luigi Illica (1857-1919) Italian librettist who wrote for Puccini and a number of other composers including Pietro Mascagni and Umberto Giordano. On the night of 23rd February 1903 Puccini, his future wife Elvira and their son Antonio, were being driven from Lucca by their chauffeur after having dined at the home of his friend Alfredo Casselli. It was a wintery, foggy night and about four miles into the journey, in the vicinity of the village of Vignola, the DeDion-Bouton car skidded on a sharp bend, rolled over the embankment, crashed into a field some fifteen yards below and overturned. Elvira and Antonio escaped with minor injuries, whilst the chauffeur, who was flung from the car, sustained a fractured thigh. Puccini could not be found at first, until he was discovered lying under the overturned car, unconscious and nearly asphyxiated by the escaping petrol fumes. Fortunately, a doctor, Dr. Sbragia, who lived close to the scene of the accident, and had heard the crash, hastened to the scene and had Puccini carried to his house. There he diagnosed a fracture of the right shin. The next morning the composer was transported back to Torre del Lago by motorboat, where the fracture was immediately set, yet so badly that after a time it was necessary to break the bone again and reset it, which left Puccini with a permanent limp. All of this occurred at the time Puccini was composing Madama Butterfly and, with his convalescence lasting eight months, the completion of the opera was greatly delayed.
