Incident at Ascot signed with initials 'A.R.T' (lower left) watercolour, pastel and gouache (Dimensions: 44 x 40cm )(44 x 40cm )Footnote: The last person to win an Olympic Gold Medal for oil painting in 1948, Alfred Reginald Thomson RA is most renowned for his work as a War Artist to the Royal Air Force between 1940 and 1944. Profoundly deaf from birth, Thomson was born in Bangalore, India, to parents George and Florence Thomson. During Alfred’s early childhood, the family moved to Margate where he attended the Royal School for Deaf Children and became fluent in sign language. Displeased that he had not learned to speak, however, Thomson’s father later enrolled him into a small private oral school in Brondesbury, London. Despite his fluency in sign language, his ability to speak and his enormous contribution to British painting, Thomson was reductively dubbed the ‘deaf and dumb’ artist by the British press. Although he attended the John Hassell School of Commercial Art in Kensington, Thomson failed to pass the entry exam for the Royal Academy and was largely self-taught. By 1945, however, Thomson was elected as a Royal Academician and was one of the most sought-after British portrait artists.
Ring-a-roses black ink and watercolour on paper (Dimensions: 17 x 20cm )(17 x 20cm )Footnote: Provenance The Artist's estate With Richard Nathanson, London, 1977 Exhibited London, Richard Nathanson, Arthur Segal (1875 - 1944) a collection of drawings c.1908-1918, 18-30 April 1977, cat.no.16 Born in Iaşi, Romania, on July 13 th , 1875, Segal was part of the Expressionist generation who would change the face of German painting, literature and politics. Utilising thin, but visible brush strokes, and a vivid palette, early examples of Segal’s work demonstrate a strong influence from Impressionist, Post-impressionist, and Neo-impressionist works. From around 1910, Segal’s work became increasingly emulative of the Expressionist and Dadaist styles, and from the 1920s would develop into his own brand of Modernism and Abstraction. Ring-a-roses appears to date from around 1912, during Segal’s Expressionist period. Similar characteristics, such as the bold outlines, broad strokes and the vague, undefined background, can be likewise observed in Frauen im Feld , circa 1912 (Kelterer Kunst, Munich, 7 December, lot 447).
The Visitors watercolour (Dimensions: 13 x 8.5cm )(13 x 8.5cm )Footnote: Provenance With Pyms Gallery, London Described as the Edgar Allen Poe of painting - Scottish painter and designer, James Pryde, is remembered for his ominous depictions of gloomy street scenes, sombre gothic interiors, and figures dwarfed by vertiginous architecture. One half of ‘the brothers Beggarstaff’, which comprised Pryde and his brother-in-law, William Nicholson, he is also noted for his contributions to theatrical poster design and graphic art. Between 1885 and 1888, Pryde trained at the Royal Scottish Academy, before studying under William-Adolphe Bouguereau at the Académie Julian, Paris, in 1889. Describing the oppressive smell of tobacco, stove-oil, and human sweat at the Parisian atelier, Pryde returned to Scotland after three months. After his sister’s marriage to William Nicholson in 1893, the pair formed the Beggarstaff partnership, which lasted until 1899. During this period, Pryde was also working as an actor. Although his reputation as an actor was not as illustrious as his reputation as a painter, his love of the stage is evidenced by the stage-set quality of his paintings. Indeed, from 1930 he worked as a theatre designer for a production of Othello at the Savoy Theatre. During his lifetime, Pryde was a highly respected artist and belonged to several institutions - including the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. After his death, in 1941, Pryde’s work received very little critical attention, until in 1992 when the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art held a major exhibition of his work. More recently, in 2019, his work was exhibited at The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, as part of their ‘Beggarstaffs’ exhibition.

JOHN SIMMONS (1823-1876) TITANIA IN THE FAIRY KINGDOM Signed and dated ' J. SIMMONS / 1871 ' , watercolour on paper 40.8 x 51.5 cm John Simmons was a British miniature painter and illustrator, known primarily for his watercolours of ethereal fairyland scenes, often illustrating Shakespearian or other literary works (such as his illustrations for ' A Midsummer Night ' s Dream ' ). He was one of several popular Victorian artists who together created ' the genre of the forest idyll ' in their fairy paintings. They are often grouped with the Pre-Raphaelites. Simmons lived in Bristol, and also painted portraits. He was elected to membership of the Bristol Academy of the Fine Arts in 1849. He died in November 1876 and is buried at Arnos Vale Cemetery, Bristol. The typical fairy painting is strongly rooted in the literary influences of Romanticism, as well as in the Victorian cultural period. Among the most significant of these influences were the themes of Shakespeare ' s A Midsummer Night ' s Dream and The Tempest. Other literary works, such as Edmund Spenser ' s 'The Faerie Queene' and Alexander Pope ' s 'The Rape of the Lock' have been cited as contributing influences as well. Interest in the fairy painting genre saw a revival in the 19th century, allowing observers of the imaginary world shown in the paintings a respite from the austerity of the Victorian way of life. The majority of Simmons ' paintings are simple and generally portray one or two main figures set within a framework of foliage. This example is one of his more ambitious compositions. Titania was frequently a subject of his artwork, shown delicately draped in a variety of poses. He portrays the fairy queen as a paradigm of Victorian female beauty using the winding flowers and convolvulus as a decorative motif. Blurring the boundaries between reality and dreams, he creates a poetic vision. According to Christopher Wood, Simmons ' technique demonstrates the influence of Joseph Noel Paton, who utilised a very detailed style. Wood also suggested further influences came from William Edward Frost and William Etty. Simmons ' paintings of fairies are given a surreal effect by his skilful use of light and the realistic detail he adopts for portraying the animals and plants. Wood described Simmons ' 'A Fairy among Convolvulus' as 'a typical Simmons pin-up' and hypothesised the paintings were 'distinctly titillating'. Other pieces of artwork by Simmons with a fairy theme include: 'Hermia and the Fairies', which was also based on Shakespeare ' s 'A Midsummer Night ' s Dream' and completed in 1861; 'The Honey Bee Steals from the Bumble Bees'; and 'The Evening Star'. This example may well be a scene from 'A Midsummer Night ' s Dream'. There is a much larger human figure with a sword clad in the mist, blissfully unaware of the fantastic creatures in the foreground.
