(47 x 68.5cm.), * This is one of a series of watercolours by Herbert depicting scenes in St. Helier's Bay, including two versions of the well known work 'St Helier, Jersey: a schooner entering harbour' which also feature Noirmont Tower, one of which forms part of the National Maritime Museum collection. Louis-Ami Arlaud-Jurine (Swiss, 1751-1829) A portrait miniature of a Gentleman, wearing a blue coat with black collar and white stock signed lower right with the initial 'A' watercolour on ivory 6½ x 6½cm (2 x 2in) Other Notes: Born in Geneva, Arlaud was first taught painting by Liotard before leaving for Paris to study under the tutorage of Vien. Following the violence of the French Revolution, he fled to London where his patrons included members of the Royal Family and the aristocratic elite. The present example shows Arlaud's successful amalgamation of both English and French miniature painting techniques. His sitter here is typically presented in a frank and open manner, with great detail and skill shown especially in rendering the fabric of the coat. Condition appears fine.
Charles Shirreff (Scottish, 1750-1831) Portrait of Colonel Gordon Skelly (1767-1828), wearing the uniform of the Royal Regiment of Foot watercolour 6.70 x 5cm (3 x 2in) Other Notes: Gordon Skelly was born in Yarm, North Yorkshire, in 1767. In 1782, at the age of fifteen, he entered the army as ensign in the 1st Battalion, 1st Regiment of Foot and in 1789 was promoted to Lieutenant. In 1783 the 1st Battalion of the 1st Regiment of Foot was stationed in Ireland and in 1790 they were transferred to Jamaica where they remained for four years, although Skelly remained in Yorkshire on recruiting duty. He is recorded as a Major in the Scotch Brigade (Grand Army) in 1794/5 and Lieutenant-Colonel in 1799. In 1799 he fought at the siege of Seringapatam, the decisive battle which ended the third Anglo-Mysore War. Skelly's uniform indicates this would have been painted prior to his promotion to Captain in 1794, and before Shirreff's departure to India the following year. Skelly married Elizabeth Newsam shortly after the battle of Seringapatam in 1800, and they had five children. He is represented in a painting entitled 'Panorama of the Storming of Seringapatam' by Sir Robert Ker Porter (1777-1842). Perhaps a little loss of colour but fine.

He was elected as a member of the Royal Academy following his painting "Convocation" which was exhibited in 1878. Most of his paintings of birds were watercolours, which he exhibited at the Old Watercolour Society or at the Fine Art Society.
