Percy French (1854-1920) Connemara Landscape (1899)watercoloursigned lower right and dated (18)'99 16½ x 24½cm (6.5 x 9.6in)Arthur Ackermann & Sons Ltd., London (label verso); Private Collection William Percy French was born in Co. Roscommon in 1854. He grew up in Derby before being sent to school in Derry as preparation for entering Trinity College, Dublin. There he studied engineering and for seven years he worked as an engineer spending his spare time sketching and composing songs. He then abandoned his chosen career to pursue his artistic interests and in addition to painting he wrote stories, verse and libretti for a musical comedy, a comic opera and a full opera, all of which were produced in Dublin. He is best remembered for his atmospheric watercolour paintings of Irish bogs and skies, typically painted using a 'wet-on-wet' technique. His work as both an artist and popular entertainer is commemorated by the Percy French Society, which was formed in the 1980s, and which has a collection of some eighty watercolours by French on permanent display in the North Down Heritage Centre.

Francis William Topham RA (1808-1877) The Stepping Stones (1861)watercoloursigned lower right and dated 1861 45.70 x 40½cm (18 x 15.9in)Richard Haworth Gallery, Blackburn (label verso); Private Collection Born in Leeds, Topham was an engraver, then an accomplished genre and figure painter, who visited the west of Ireland repeatedly from the 1840's, and also Wales and Spain. Together with Frederick Goodall, and Alfred Downing Fripp, his legacy of detailed scenes of rural people, is highly valued by social historians. He exhibited widely, for example at the RA, the RHA and for 30 years regularly at the Old Watercolour Society. His depiction of this barefoot mother, her white bonnet suggestive of her married status, is typical of his Irish work. Fond of painting women and children, he shows her carrying her child across a stone ford, their substantial stone farmhouse in the background. Claudia Kinmonth, October 2018

Lot 73

Terence P. Flanagan RHA PRUA (1929-2011) Dromahair Signal Boxwatercolourlower centre right 54½ x 74½cm (21.5 x 29.3in)David Hendriks Gallery, Dublin (label verso); Collection of the late Vincent Ferguson; Thence by Descent T.P. Flanagan Exhibition: Ulster Museum: 17th November - 25th February 1996 TP Flanagan was probably the finest Irish watercolour painter of the 20th Century. To some extent, he suffered from the fact that watercolour is usually considered as a lesser medium than oil paint. He did paint in oil as well, but he was a watercolourist through and through. Arguably, the tonal delicacy of his work also told against him. His palette was restrained. And often he painted in less obvious locations: Fermanagh or, as here, Leitrim. But the quality of his painting is quite exceptional, and his work has an enduring, classical poise.

Janet’s highly individual and distinctive landscapes have been exhibited in many leading galleries including the Mall Galleries, London, The Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh and The Lowry Gallery, Salford and can also be found in private collections in the UK and abroad. This watercolour was completed "around 1987" and so far as we can ascertain, it is somewhat remarkably, the first Janet Kenyon work to be offered at a UK auction.

* JOHN NICHOLSON (SCOTTISH 1921 - 2004), TS DUCHESS OF HAMILTON watercolour on paper, signed and titled 35cm x 53cm Mounted, framed and under glass Note: John Nicholson was only five when his love affair with ships began. John was fascinated by the workings of a paddle steamer on a day trip to the Isle of Man in 1925 and he was still enjoying sailing on the paddle steamer PS Waverley 78 years later. Drawing was also an interest from a very young age and family holidays on the Clyde in the 1930s provided the subject matter for many of his early paintings. John served in WWII and spent four years as a POW. In the early 1950s he began receiving commissions. Pen and ink drawings appeared in several shipping magazines and from 1984 until 1987, John was commissioned to paint all new vessels to the Cal/Mac fleet. His attention to detail in all his pictures often led to extended correspondence with those wanting a painting of a ship in a particular livery or location. His regular trips to the Isle of Man resulted in a commission from Captain Jack Ronan to paint three Steam Packet ships for him. In 1993 he was commissioned to do a set of paintings of The Isle of Man Steam Packet ships for postage stamps issued by the Isle of Man Post Office. John was a renowned marine artist and his works will remain as a permanent memorial to his abiding interest in all things to do with the sea and, for more than 25 years, he provided the PS Waverley with artwork for their postcards, posters, timetables and advertisements - and all completely free of charge. Early in 1990, the publishers Hart, Maclagan & Will were printing their first book in The Memories of the Clyde series, The Duchess of Fife. They were searching for a suitable front-cover illustration and contact was made with John Nicholson. In 1992 the second title, Steamers of the Clyde, featured all 24 illustrations painted by John Nicholson. In 1994, Liners of the Clyde was published. This book contained illustrations of 24 liners all painted by John with his own authoritative descriptions. He followed this with another work on the steamers of the Clyde and Western Isles with the words provided by himself, Robin Boyd and Iain Quinn. TS Duchess of Hamilton was buit in 1932 by Harland and Wolff at Govan for the Caledonian Steam Packet Company. She was a popular boat providing day cruises from Ayr, Troon and Ardrossan. After the war she ran long distance excursions from Gourock to Campeltown and later to Ayr, Arran and Inveraray. Her last voyage was to Campbeltown on 28th September 1970.
