Palioura, The Painting Oeuvre of Theodoros Ralli (1852-1909), doctoral dissertation, University of Athens, Athens 2008, vol. I, p. 134 (mentioned), vol. II, fig. 233 (illustrated).M. Katsanaki, Theodore Ralli, A.G. Leventis Foundation - A.G. Leventis Gallery, Athens 2018, no. 186, p. 361 (catalogued), p. 290 (illustrated).Ralli's extraordinary skill in the watercolour medium provides visual and tactile pleasures. Here, a luscious harem beauty with luminous complexion and satin, snow-white skin, possibly a Circassian from the Black Sea, sits naked on a Moorish hamam's1 low divan, which is covered with a traditional long-haired blanket. Slightly twisting her torso to reinforce the message of languor and sensuousness, she confronts the viewer, inviting them to a dreamworld of oriental fantasy. The setting, which is deliberately spartan to accentuate the beauty and grace of the female body, is enlivened by the inclusion of only few ethnographic details, namely the turban-like headpiece, the impressive nargile, and the ubiquitous pair of nalin2 decorated with geometric designs. Through such scarce but poignant details, Ralli achieved unity of effect, successfully conveying an atmosphere of romantic mysticism and suggestive eroticism. 1 For harem women, the hamam was a luxurious pastime, offering them a chance not only to purify but also to go out into the world. 2 Ottoman high-heeled wooden footwear worn by bathers to protect them from slipping on wet surfaces. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Company School Ornithological WatercoloursThe exquisitely detailed ornithological paintings seen in the following lots are legacies of the Anglo-Indian relationship fostered at the end of the eighteenth century, when the East India Company expanded its influence across the country. The British colonialists settling in India were fascinated by the exotic flora and fauna they encountered and attempted to document it by commissioning local artists to paint natural history pictures. The artists producing these works came from a range of Indian artistic traditions – Mughal, Maratha, Punjabi, Pahari, Tamil and Telugu. Three distinct schools emerged, first in Lucknow and Calcutta, then later in Delhi. Here we see examples from the Calcutta School at the turn of the 19th century and later examples of ‘Company School’, a term that refers to Indian artists working in a European tradition. The school declined after the 1840s when the practice of painting as a means of documentation was replaced by photography.Calcutta School, c.1800A pair of Indian tree piesnumbered '400' and '399' in Persian (the first l.r., the second l.l.,) both further inscribed l.c., the second with an indistinct inscription in Latin l.l., pencil pen and ink and watercolour, heightened with bodycolour and gum arabicboth 47.6 x 32.8cm (2)Provenance: Christie's London, 'Watercolours and Pictures of Birds', 30 September 1997, lot 17.Condition report: There is possibly a small repair to the paper to the lower left corner of the bird facing left. see image. * CLAIRE HARKESS RSW (SCOTTISH B. 1970 - ), PASSING ISLANDS II watercolour on paper, signed 17cm x 20cm (excluding frame and mount) Mounted, framed and under glass. Multiple labels verso: including The Scottish Gallery, Claire Harkess RSW "Galapagos" (Exhibition) 4th - 28th June 2008 catalogue number 84 where sold. Other Scottish Gallery stock labels with title, medium etc and artist's label. Note: Claire Harkess was born in Ayr, Scotland, graduating from Glasgow School of Art in the early 1990s. In recent years her painting has taken her to fragile lands to study and interpret life on the edge. Antarctica, Outback Australia and St Kilda are all places where, in such extreme environments, survival is difficult and the balance of life is delicate. Harkess has also worked on the Galápagos Islands, made famous by Charles Darwin’s ‘The Origin of the Species’. This isolated volcanic outpost remained relatively untouched by man, evolving to become one of the World’s unique ecosystems. The balance present in nature is clearly communicated through Claire's paintings. Painting in watercolour or gouache offers a unique directness; the essential qualities of light and energy present in the natural world are the very essence of the medium itself. The delicacy of her palette and oriental economy of her mark-making creates a subtle tension representing a world that is ‘holding still’, giving a sense of freedom, spirit, time and place. Claire's work is exhibited at The Scottish Gallery, where her most recent highly successful solo show was in July 2020, and at other prestigious galleries around the UK.
