ROBERT MCGOWAN COVENTRY RSW ARSA (SCOTTISH 1855 - 1914), THE RIVER SEINE AT NOTRE DAME, PARIS oil on board, signedframed image size 40cm x 50cm, overall size 91cm x 72cm Note 1: The Scottish artist Robert McGown (McGowan) Coventry (1855–1914) was born in Glasgow and trained at the Glasgow School of Art under Robert Greenlees and in Paris. He travelled on the Continent and to the Middle East but found most of his subject matter in the fishing communities of Scotland and in the Scottish Highlands. He was not closely associated with the group of young painters known as the Glasgow Boys, but shared their interest in rustic realism, in painting in the open air, and in French-inspired tonal and compositional technique. He was based in Glasgow throughout his professional life. In 1889 he became a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour and in 1906 was elected associate of the Royal Scottish Academy, exhibiting regularly with both organisations and with the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.Note 2: The work on offer is a rare Paris scene depicting the activities of everyday life on the river Seine in the late nineteenth century, which demonstrates the influences of the French masters in the freedom of the brushwork and strong use of colour.

Lot 27

ROBERT MCGOWN COVENTRY RSW ARSA (SCOTTISH 1855 - 1914), THE WOODCUTTERS oil on canvas, signedframedimage 89cm x 130cm, overall 109cm x 150cmNote: Coventry was born in Glasgow and studied at the Glasgow School of Art under Robert Greenlees and in Paris. Although he travelled much to the continent and the Middle East, many of his paintings depict quayside and highland scenes from eastern Scotland. When visiting and painting in Belgium and Holland, he was influenced by the work of Mesdag and Maris. He used the signature "R M G COVENTRY". In 1889 Coventry was elected as a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW) and in 1906 he was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA). He exhibited his marine and landscape paintings mainly at the RSA from 1875 until the year of his death (1914). Although "The Woodcutters" is undated, he painted several works of similar subject matter in the early 1900s including "The Forest Mill" which is held in the collection of The Royal Scottish Academy.

BENJAMIN JOHN OTTEWELL RI (BRITISH 1847 - 1937), LOCHNAGAR, ROYAL DEESIDE watercolour on paper, signed, dated 1907, titled label versomounted, framed and under glassimage size 44cm x 60cm, overall size 64cm x 82cmLabel verso: Eduardo Alessandro Studios, Dundee.Note: Ben Ottewell was a regular visitor to Braemar and latterly Balmoral painting scenes of the valley of the Upper Dee. Queen Victoria thought highly of him: in June 1895 she wrote "saw some beautiful sketches by an artist by the name of Ottewell, who had spent several months in Braemar painting, having been snowed up for some weeks in the winter at the Linn of Dee". Ottewell went on to receive numerous commissions for his watercolours from Queen Victoria, HRH The Prince of Wales, and the Duke and Duchess of York. Ottewell was also engaged to teach his painting skills to Princess Beatrice. The Old Man of Lochnagar is a 1980 children's book written by then Prince of Wales, HM King Charles III and illustrated by Sir Hugh Casson. The story revolves around an old man who lives in a cave in the cliffs surrounding the Corrie Loch under the Lochnagar, a mountain which overlooks the Royal Estate at Balmoral, where the Royal Family spend much of their summer holidays. The story of the old man of Lochnagar was one Prince Charles had told some years earlier to entertain his brothers when they were young. The book was published in 1980 in aid of The Prince's Trust charity. The book was later adapted into an animated short film by the BBC, with the late Robbie Coltrane providing the voice of the hermit and Prince Charles narrating. The film was titled The Old Man of Lochnagar in the UK and The Legend of Lochnagar in North America. The book was also adapted into a musical stage play. In 1984, Prince Charles read the story on the BBC children's programme Jackanory. He has also read it in Scottish Gaelic and in Welsh translations on television. In 2007, the National Youth Ballet of Great Britain received permission from the Prince of Wales to create a new ballet based on the story. With choreography by Drew McOnie and a commissioned score by Nigel Hess, the ballet received its première at Sadler's Wells Theatre (London) on 14 October 2007.

ROBERT GEMMELL HUTCHISON RSA RBA ROI RSW (SCOTTISH 1855 - 1936), A YOUNG GIRL READING watercolour on paper, signed mounted, framed and under glass image size 35cm x 25cm, overall size 65cm x 55cm Note: The child depicted is almost certainly Jean, the daughter of Bertie (Roberta), the artist's eldest daughter, and his only grand-daughter. Jean was deaf and dumb and as a child featured in many of her grandfather's paintings. Gemmell Hutchison was devoted to his grand-daughter and they spent much time together, especially on painting trips to nearby St Abbs. The location is likely the interior of Bertie's cottage home in the beautiful coastal village of Coldingham (Berwickshire, Scottish Borders) where Gemmell Hutchison visited frequently. He eventually died there on 23rd August 1936. He was buried at the Dean Cemetery (Edinburgh) on one of the long curving paths to the south-west. After graduating, he joined the staff at Hyndland Secondary School in 1952. That same year he was also elected a member of the Society of Scottish Artists (SSA). In 1958, he became a founder member of the Glasgow Group and formed the Glasgow Group Society, of which he was Vice-President for 32 years. In 1965, he was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), a society of which he also became Vice-President and Treasurer. He became Principal Art Teacher at Douglas Academy, near Bearsden, and later at Gryffe High, near Kilbarchan. Bill's abilities not only as a teacher but also as an administrator were noticed by the Department of Education and he was soon appointed Head Examiner in Art for Scotland. He still managed to maintain a very active exhibiting schedule and showed in all the main public galleries and many of Scotland's best commercial galleries. His work was enthusiastically collected and increasingly sought after. He was elected a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art (RGI) and of the Paisley Art Institute (PAI). In the early years, he painted from his garden, showing the village of Kilbarchan in its changing seasons, under a quiet blanket of winter snow, or framed in a blazing sunset through autumnal trees. Later visits to France and Italy with his artist wife, Cynthia Wall, whom he married in 1953, brought new subject matter, cafe scenes, vine groves, Italian clifftop villages, and the crumbling facades of palaces and churches of Venice. It was characteristic of the man that when told that his illness was terminal, he calmly put his affairs in order and started work for a final one-man show at the Open Eye Gallery (Edinburgh) the scene of so many of his successful shows. Unsurprisingly, the exhibition was a complete sell-out. In recent years there has been a widely acknowledged acceleration in the prices achieved at auctions around the UK for William Birnie's paintings. In the Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 8th November 2020 lot 567 "The Red House" a 60 x 90cm oil sold for £3000 (hammer) which, not for the first time in recent years, set a new auction record for a painting by William Birnie.Condition is good overall.

He then moved to Sicily where his painting reflected the heat and fertility of the northern coast. Returning to Scotland he spent 35 happy years involved in art education. A member of the Glasgow Group for 30 years, he was closely involved with the Richard Demarco Gallery in the 1980s. He now lives in North East Fife and is married to the painter Liz Murray. His passion for watercolour springs from the innate volatility of the medium, the constant vigilance required when painting wet-into-wet and the critical scrutiny necessary while watching paint dry. Dawson Murray's portfolio includes a 50ft high painting; a permanent feature in the Buchanan Galleries, Glasgow. After living with multiple sclerosis for 22 years he is now quadriplegic but is still able to create prints with the aid of an assistant, using his own version of the traditional sugar-lift technique, allowing him to “replicate the bleeding edges of areas of colour” that he so enjoyed in watercolour painting. Dawson Murray's work has won many awards, has been exhibited widely and is held in prestigious public, corporate and private collections.

* CLAIRE HARKESS RSW (SCOTTISH b. 1970), YELLOW BIRDS watercolour on paper, signed mounted, framed and under glassimage size 68cm x 32cm, overall size 94.5cm x 56cm Note: Claire Harkess was born in Ayr, Scotland, graduating from Glasgow School of Art in the early 1990s. In recent years her painting has taken her to fragile lands to study and interpret life on the edge. Antarctica, Outback Australia and St Kilda are all places where, in such extreme environments, survival is difficult and the balance of life is delicate. Harkess has also worked on the Galápagos Islands, made famous by Charles Darwin’s ‘The Origin of the Species’. This isolated volcanic outpost remained relatively untouched by man, evolving to become one of the World’s unique ecosystems. The balance present in nature is clearly communicated through Claire's paintings. Painting in watercolour or gouache offers a unique directness; the essential qualities of light and energy present in the natural world are the very essence of the medium itself. The delicacy of her palette and oriental economy of her mark-making creates a subtle tension representing a world that is ‘holding still’, giving a sense of freedom, spirit, time and place. Claire's work is exhibited at The Scottish Gallery, where her most recent highly successful solo show was in July 2020, and at other prestigious galleries around the UK.
